    How Use ChatGPT

Congratulations on taking the first step towards becoming a better author with ChatGPT! As an AI language model trained by OpenAI, ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can help unlock new avenues of creative expression and bring your ideas to life.

We are all familiar with the autocorrect feature in our phones. It can be a great tool to write faster messages or use spell check on the go. Features like spellcheck, autocorrect and artificial intelligence assistants like Siri, Alexa and Cortana, over time, can become the most useful tools at our disposal. Each are made to assist us in different ways and as long as we understand what they can do, each one gives us the right help when we need it.

The same can be said for ChatGPT.

As defined, ChatGPT is a language model Artificial Intelligence. Meaning, it responds to you as if it were a person. Once you create an account and log in, you can jump in and ask it for answers that are not so easy to obtain when using typical search engines. For example, if you ask ChatGPT to give you a recipe for homemade chicken soup:

Q: Please provide a recipe for homemade chicken soup.

A: Certainly! Here’s a recipe for homemade chicken soup:

    Ingredients:

1 whole chicken (about 4 pounds)

    10 cups water

    2 carrots, peeled and chopped

    2 celery stalks, chopped

    1 onion, chopped

    3 cloves garlic, minced

    1 bay leaf

    1 teaspoon dried thyme

    1 teaspoon dried rosemary

    Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup wide egg noodles (optional)

    Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

    Instructions:

Place the whole chicken in a large pot and pour in the water. Bring it to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 1 hour, or until the chicken is cooked through and tender.

Carefully remove the chicken from the pot and set it aside to cool. Once it’s cool enough to handle, shred the meat into bite-sized pieces and discard the skin and bones.

Skim any excess fat from the surface of the broth in the pot. Add the chopped carrots, celery, onion, garlic, bay leaf, thyme, and rosemary. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Bring the soup back to a simmer and cook for about 20-30 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.

If desired, add the egg noodles to the soup and cook for an additional 8-10 minutes, or until the noodles are cooked al dente.

Return the shredded chicken to the pot and stir well to combine. Cook for another 5 minutes to heat the chicken through.

Taste the soup and adjust the seasoning if needed. Remove the bay leaf before serving.

Ladle the homemade chicken soup into bowls and garnish with freshly chopped parsley.

    Enjoy your homemade chicken soup!

Once you have your answer, you can continue asking as if texting a real person, modifying as needed. Ask ChatGPT to make the recipe Vegan, Paleo or Keto. Treat the chat like you would if a master chef were on the other side of your screen.

Trying the same thing on a typical search engine would produce a response filled with site links, articles and blogs that may touch on the topic you asked about... along with an array of ads.

Asking questions using search engines has been (for the most part) a long journey of multiple-choice juggling.

Getting started with ChatGPT as an author may seem daunting at first, but with a little guidance and practice, you can wield this revolutionary tool like a pro. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just starting out, ChatGPT can provide a wealth of inspiration, guidance, and feedback to help you hone your craft and achieve your goals. Here are some quick tips to help get you started:

    Familiarize yourself with ChatGPT.

Before we dive into writing options, read the documentation and FAQs provided by OpenAI. This gives an overview of what ChatGPT can do, how to use it, and how to get the most out of this remarkable AI tool. Take your time to Explore ChatGPT’s features and capabilities. ChatGPT is capable of generating a wide range of content.

It’s recommended to begin by asking easy questions or giving it simple prompts to generate responses. This will help you understand how ChatGPT responds and what types of answers you can expect.

From short stories and poems to essays and articles, ChatGPT can provide the assistance needed to cut down on time, improve quality and increase productivity. You can even use ChatGPT to help with research or brainstorming ideas.

Also, ChatGPT has various settings that can be adjusted to customize your experience. Try experimenting with these settings to see how they affect ChatGPT’s responses and to find the ones that work best for you. When you understand what ChatGPT can do, you’ll be able to use it more effectively and get better results.

    PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICe

The more you use ChatGPT, the better it will work for you and the more familiar you will become with its features and capabilities. Practice as you go and try different types of queries and prompts to get the most out of the platform.

A quick tip to think about: Don’t use it like a search engine and type a title or a web site as an inquiry. As stated above, ChatGPT is made for conversations. You can spend hours chatting with this AI, (if you so desire). Rather than looking for search results that a typical search engine uses, begin by either asking or telling ChatGPT what you want, like:

Q: What are the best available podcasts for authors?

ChatGPT will immediately give you results that you can use, rather than a line of links to articles that ask similar questions.

When I entered the question, I got the following response:

A: There are many great podcasts available for authors, but here are some of the most popular and highly recommended ones:

Writing Excuses: Hosted by Brandon Sanderson, Mary Robinette Kowal, Dan Wells, and Howard Tayler, this podcast covers a wide range of topics related to writing, from the craft of writing to the business of publishing.

    ––––––––

As you can see, there were no links to external sites or paid articles. Just the answer I asked for. (BTW, I subscribed to most of the podcasts suggested and they are awesome!)

You can also add to the question if you like. Ask ChatGPT to give you more results or ask to specifically target your genre. Try it out and see how amazing the results can be.

Note: to avoid confusion, I’ve italicized my Q&A with ChatGPT and bolded my questions.

    ––––––––

    Start with small projects.

If you’re new to writing with ChatGPT, it’s a good idea to start with small projects. This will allow you to get a feel for how the system works and help you build confidence in your abilities.

A good example can be to try writing the beginning of a short story or a few paragraphs on a topic that interests you. Tell ChatGPT to give you references for your topic or story and utilize the results as you continue your story or article.

    Here’s an example:

Q: From the paragraph below, provide a list of additional resources useful for descriptions, specific details and additional references to the story:

Jake walked across the Golden Gate Bridge with care. The deterioration over centuries of neglect were evident in every step. With every movement, Jake knew it was a miracle the structure was still standing.

The reply I received at the time I entered the question is as follows:

A: Here are some additional resources that could be useful for adding descriptions, specific details, and references to the story of Jake walking across the San Francisco Bridge:

The official website of the Golden Gate Bridge provides information on the history, design, and construction of the bridge, as well as current statistics on its maintenance and repair.

The book Building the Golden Gate Bridge: A Workers’ Oral History by Harvey Schwartz offers first-hand accounts from workers who built the bridge, providing insight into the challenges and triumphs of the construction process.

The National Park Service website provides information on the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which includes the Golden Gate Bridge and other historic landmarks in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The documentary film The Bridge by Eric Steel offers a haunting look at the Golden Gate Bridge and the people who have jumped from it over the years, providing a unique perspective on the bridge’s history and significance.

The book Golden Gate: The Life and Times of America’s Greatest Bridge by Kevin Starr offers a comprehensive history of the Golden Gate Bridge, from its inception to its current role as an icon of American engineering and architecture.

These resources can provide specific details and references to help enrich the story of Jake walking across the San Francisco Bridge, adding depth and context to the scene.

No matter what information you are looking for, ChatGPT can assist you. As you gain more experience, you can gradually increase the complexity and length of your projects.
