Kris, shouted Mrs. Conway. Get down this instant or...Oh no! Mrs. Conway ran to the tree where Kris now lay, clothing torn and covered with mud, her hair full of leaves and scratches evident on all uncovered portions of her body.

My foot, it hurts, moaned Kris.

Much later, after Dr. Saunders had departed, Mrs. Conway entered Kris’ room. Kris, lying in bed in a fresh nightgown, looking much subdued, bore little resemblance to the 13-year-old of just a short hour previous.
