Mrs. Conway ran to the tree where Kris now lay, clothing torn and covered with mud, her hair full of leaves and scratches evident on all uncovered portions of her body.
My foot, it hurts
, moaned Kris.
Much later, after Dr. Saunders had departed, Mrs. Conway entered Kris’ room. Kris, lying in bed in a fresh nightgown, looking much subdued, bore little resemblance to the 13-year-old of just a short hour previous.
"Why Kris? Why do you do such things? Why do you have to behave in such a reckless manner? Even your name. Insisting everyone call you Kris and refusing to answer if they do not. And you have such a lovely name, Kristabel.
I don’t know what I’m going to do with you...what on earth were you doing half way up that tree?"
