“Gluten-Free Birthday For Me” was a fantastic book. The main message behind this book is to show that there is someone with the same food allergy as someone else. This was exemplified through the illustrations and plot. The plot was well organized, it starts off with a little girl who is having a birthday party and ends with her making a friend who has the same allergy as her. This is assisted by the pace of the book it isn’t to fast or to slow but is at a medium pace. The pace of this book allows for the read to follow without the need to finish in the same day. This book does however have you guessing to figure out who has the gluten allergy and why it is so important to the story. On the other hand the rhyme scheme in the book causes for the reader to not want to put it down. It is very catchy and a page-turner, you constantly want to know what will be the next rhyming word. The illustrations in this book are very engaging and enhancing to the story due to the use of the vivid colors and the human like features of the characters. These features allow for the reader to be sucked into the book and become part of the story. I also loved that in the back of the book there was a recipe for two different desserts that are made gluten-free.

Because more children and adults are becoming “Gluten-Free,” this book is very relevant for today’s society. I enjoyed the way that the story approached being “Gluten-Free.” Since many sweets that children love have gluten, not being able to enjoy these treats in settings like a child’s birthday party could make many children upset. However, the story was written with rhymes and a fun rhythm that brings light to this situation. I also enjoyed the story because it was informational as well; the first line in the story was “can’t use flour, can’t use wheat” which are ingredients that have gluten. Although it did show what gluten-free children cannot have, it showed that these children are just like everyone else: painting faces, getting fake tattoos, and running relay races. In the back of the book, the author provided two recipes and tips for family and friends that know gluten-free individuals as well. The central message of this story was that being gluten-free isn’t so bad and that there are ways to still have tasty foods without gluten.

I liked this book because of the way it was written. There was a rhythm to the book as it used rhyme to make the book flow. Young children love rhyme and it would hold their attention. I also liked the message about being accommodating. There was a little boy at the party who couldn’t have gluten and they special cake made it so that they could all enjoy the event. Then at the very end of the book was the recipe for Gluten free Cake and I thought that was great.
