Road Block
Prologue
A boy steps from the shelter of the trees and into the small clearing. He is drawn to a curious pile of leaves with a pair of shoes visible at one end. He has played in these woods many times as a youngster, but has never noticed this small, peaceful glade, perhaps because it was just slightly beyond the boundaries set by his mother when they had lived in the old cabin nearby. He was older now and he had slipped away while his mother and his soon-to-be stepfather were clearing out the cabin.
A stepfather! He wasn’t sure how he felt about that. The guy was nice but the adolescent boy resented the time his mother spent with the new man in her life. A stepfather would live with them full time. He kicked at the shoe nearest him. It didn’t move the way he’d expected it to. Excitement rose up in him; he’d made a DISCOVERY!
He began gently pushing the leaves aside as his mother had taught him to do when they were studying archaeology. There was some fabric; he followed its length to discover a pant leg! It dawned on him finally that he was looking at a skeleton – a dead man! Should he scream? Call for help? No, he decided, if he screamed it would frighten his mother. He’d go get her and bring her back here. She’d know what to do.
He paused, carefully considering what a real scientist or archaeologist would do. He pulled out his cell phone. No service up here, but he could still photograph the scene, the scene of the crime!
Finished, he started back toward the cabin, then stopped suddenly as a thought occurred to him. Was this his father, the man who had disappeared years ago? He didn’t think so. The stash of things he’d found in his hollow tree was too recent for this to be his father. Satisfied with his reasoning the boy turned toward his former home to tell his mother that he’d found a dead body.
