Sophia

The waves crash against the coast. A few lonely sounding seagulls squawk behind me as I twist the key to my casita into the lock. When Justine told me she was having a destination ranch wedding in Santa Barbara, I was confused at first. There are so many spectacular settings at home in Montana, why fly all the way to California?

Now I’m beginning to understand.

This ranch isn’t land-locked. Justine will have her wedding ceremony on the beach, with a view of the Pacific Ocean on her right, and pastures of cattle on her left. It’s the best of both worlds here. As an added bonus, I can’t count the number of vineyards I passed on the drive in. There’s wine in California. I chuckle. California wins, at least for the weekend.

I adjust my duffle’s strap over my shoulder, open the door and gasp. The window on the far side of the room has the most magnificent view of the ocean I’ve ever seen. Justine and William must’ve spent a fortune. They’re putting up seventy-five guests at this resort.

Hypnotized by the wall-to-wall view, I shut the door behind me and drop the key on the coffee table. Without taking my eyes off the shimmering silver ocean, I cross the spacious living room to the window where the sky is
