Sorcery Stories to Scare Your Socks Off! - Michael Dahl

    BATTLE OF THE WITCHES!

    By Benjamin Harper

It all started when Sasha, my ex-best friend, decided to cast a spell that would make me fail my English test. Why did she do it, you ask? I’m not really sure—but it worked. When I got the test paper from my teacher, I stared at the page, and my mind went completely blank. I couldn’t answer a single question.

I had no idea it was her until she passed me at lunch, and she asked, How did your test go? with a smirk on her face. I told her I couldn’t answer a single question, and her only reply was, I know.

Sasha and I are both witches.

We were raised in a coven together, and we had been best friends since we were little. And then something happened. She met this other girl. Dracona, who dressed totally goth and seemed like she was really mean. Sasha stopped calling and texting as often as she used to, and it became clear that I had been replaced. But why would she start casting spells on me? There was only one thing for me to do…

    Cast a spell on HER.

She used to sleep over at my house all the time, and there was a comb of hers in the bathroom. I plucked a single strand of her hair from it and put it in a jar with some ants, a strawberry (she was allergic), and some dirt. I sealed the jar and waved my hands over it.

"Ants and berries make her itch,

Make her scratch and make her squirm!

Make her wriggle like a worm!"

I said that spell three times and then took the jar over to her house, where I put it under her front steps. (I came back the next day to let the ants out—I love insects!)

I couldn’t wait to see if my spell worked. I would be able to find out in third period when we had Spanish class together.

She came in, ignoring me as usual, with Dracona at her side. They were whispering something (nasty, I’m sure), and she sat down. Once class started, I noticed that she was scratching herself all over. She was reaching around to scratch her back, her ankles, behind her knees, everywhere. She was getting so out of control Señora Revis asked her what the problem was. Nada, she replied.

Creepy, wide-eyed doll with a note tied to her chest.
