Gear Up in the Armor of God

Many motorcyclists can seem obsessed with ensuring they have all the gear all the time. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that, but some constantly search for the right boots, the perfect helmet, padded pants, shirts, jackets, etc. They must even have just the right gloves. Not to mention a windshield for their bike, saddle bags to carry things in, and other bells and whistles.

Of course, we want to be safe, but lots of time and money are often invested.  The phrase all the gear all the time has become well-known among riders. We do need all the gear all the time. We need to be wearing God’s Gear (His armor all the time) to manage spiritual warfare against the enemy who comes to kill, steal, and destroy. Ephesians 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all to resist.

Helmet - Riders who do not wear helmets are at significantly increased risk of severe head trauma, coma, death, and other injuries.

Similarly, the helmet of salvation helps us avoid sinful thoughts that can lead to spiritual trauma or death. The helmet of salvation helps us understand what is true, sound, and holy.

Padding/Breastplate of Righteousness- Padding protects from the elements and enables us to avoid severe injuries in the event of a crash. The breastplate of righteousness is like the padding in our shirts or jackets because if we do not protect ourselves with righteousness, we open ourselves up to impact from the enemy and can crash into sin.

Windshield/Shield of Faith- In inclement weather, a windshield offers increased comfort and protection from the elements, as the shield of faith will protect us from the elements of evil and provide us comfort as we fight back against the enemy's attacks.

Belt of Truth- While belts aren’t necessarily considered part of motorcycle gear, they help keep our clothing snug and in place...we’ve all seen what the wind can do to our clothes when we ride. The belt of truth helps us hold God’s truth close to us and allows it to surround us snugly.

Sword of the Spirit/Get-Back Whip- While the sword of the spirit is much preferable, just as a get-back whip can be used defensively or offensively, so can the sword, which is the word of God. The sword can be used for defense when we are in imminent danger to defend ourselves against enemy attacks. It can also be used offensively for guidance.

Boots/Shoes of Gospel of Peace- Boots help to add support and prepare the ankles for safer control and protection that can reduce the impact in the event of a fall. Likewise, the shoes of the gospel of peace support us in preparation to share God’s word with knowledge and self-control anytime He sets those divine appointments.

To place the helmet of salvation upon our heads, we need to pray for God to clear our minds of anything that will distract us from operating within His perspective and bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ (II Corinthians 10:5). To wear the padding/breastplate of righteousness, we must act on what God has said, declaring His word valid and that we want to please Him in all we do. Utilizing the shield of faith requires actions that show we believe what God is telling us to be accurate and for His strength and support in our actions. When buckling up the belt of truth, we declare we believe God’s truths because we know that God has come and given us an understanding that we may know Him who is trustworthy, and we are in Him who is faithful in His son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life (I John 5:20). To effectively wield the sword, we need to ask God to guide us to the right scripture at the right time so that we can write his words upon our hearts. Let the word of God dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in our hearts to the Lord (Colossians 3:18). Step into the boots/shoes of the gospel of peace by asking God to confirm situations in our lives or cause so much discomfort that we should change directions.

Each piece of the armor has its purpose and will serve a specific function when we put it on. Prayer activates it! Gear up, activate, and go! Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15).

Wind Therapy of the Holy Spirit

There are many reasons people love wind therapy. We enjoy the freedom of the ride, the joy and passion, and some enjoy the speed. The friendship, brother/sisterhood, and camaraderie are beyond anything I have ever experienced, and it’s a stress buster. Wind therapy also has mental and physical health benefits; it’s fun. The most important reason we ride is for the Son.

When riding our motorcycles, the freedom that comes with being able to travel anywhere without limits, the open air, wind bruising in our faces, and all the beautiful sights unobscured by the cage of an automobile provide a sense of freedom. Still, the greatest freedom we can experience is that of the Holy Spirit.

    Holy Spirit brings:

Freedom from sin and death: Romans 8:2 says, For the law of the Spirit of life has set us free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

Freedom from fear: 2 Timothy 1:7 says, For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Freedom to worship: John 4:24 says God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

Freedom to love: In Galatians 5:13 says for we were called to freedom, brothers. Do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love, serve one another.

Few things compare to our joy and passion as we twist that throttle.

We experience joy and fulfillment beyond our circumstances when filled with the Holy Spirit. This joy comes from knowing that God loves and works in and through us to accomplish
