Dragon It Out - J. Thompson

    1

Jareth was on edge. Who wouldn’t be when the woman who was destined to be his mate wouldn’t wake up? The only times he had seen any reaction from her was when he held her hand. But, even then, his sweet Olivia’s green eyes weren’t what met his. Instead, her eyes had been black and empty. She had looked through him as if he wasn’t there.

Kevin had been amazing, keeping her company when Jareth needed out of his cave and keeping Jareth fed even when he didn’t want to eat. Kevin had been with him for just under one hundred years as his companion.

Kevin had been a mage, a bloody good one at that, and had helped Jareth out of more scrapes than he would care to admit. However, Kevin had pushed his magic too far, using a spell that was too advanced, and poof he had become a llama. Jareth had been there through the breakdown, the ensuing ugly tears, and finally the acceptance. He had done what any friend should do and given him purpose, even in his now-cursed form.

Alas, the angel still sleeps. Yes? Kevin’s voice called out from the kitchen as Jareth moved through the caves to join him. He really did like being home. The caves offered him a respite from everything, including himself. Being a dragon, he had to shift, but in London that was difficult without being seen. Lady Penelope had done it right with her roof space, but he had never had a chance to find a dwelling that could accommodate.

The caves he had discovered one late-night flight a long time ago housed a main cavern, which was big enough for him to stretch out his wings, and had a bathing pool, which was big enough for him in dragon form. Then off to the right of the large chamber, a tunnel led to the living quarters with multiple bedrooms, a large open-plan kitchen, and a living room—all created with magic. Kevin might be a llama, but he was a gifted one at that.

Is she still sleeping? Kevin asked again, bringing Jareth back to the present.

Yes. Jareth sighed as he slid onto the stool next to the granite breakfast bar. She’s not stirred at all.

Do not worry. She is safe and will wake when she is ready. I’m guessing it’s not easy taking on an entity, especially when forced. Kevin fished an apple pie from the oven.

Is that pie? Jareth asked, the scent making his mouth water. Kevin was an excellent cook but rarely ever baked.

It is, was Kevin’s only response, but Jareth eyed the llama. You’re nervous? Why… you only ever bake when you are stressed.

Kevin looked sheepish as he placed a second pie on the counter.

You said the blackI wanna take over the world dragon placed an oracle inside her?

Yeah, and when she did wake briefly, her eyes were black.

    Ahh…

Ahh? That’s it? Just ahh. You going to tell me what’s going around in that woolly head of yours?

Kevin stopped moving about the kitchen and looked at him. His little hat sat askew, and his left eye was twitching. He had always been a bit of a drama queen.

There are many oracles in this world—some good and some bad. Some we don’t even know about. Looks like your girl got saddled with one from the last category. This means she is now an unknown, and we don’t know whose side she’s on. So yeah, I’m nervous because sleeping beauty in there could wake up suddenly and decide she doesn’t like llamas.

Kevin’s outburst made Jareth tilt his head and smirk. You know I won’t let that happen.

You are not going to be here all the time, oh mighty dragon. You could come home one day, and poof, she’s fried me to smithereens.

You are being dramatic. Jareth chuckled.

Dramatic! You haven’t seen dramatic yet. Kevin flounced out of the kitchen, his hat bobbing on his head. Just you wait. You’ll miss me when I’m gone.

Jareth shook his head. He adored the llama but sometimes he could overreact. Jareth was positive that Olivia wasn’t a threat, regardless of her parasitic extra personality. Even after knowing Olivia for a short while, he was certain she would not give her whole conscience over so easily. No, that female would fight to the very end. The fact she had befriended a dragon was the first clue to her loyal yet feisty attitude—one that even a mighty oracle would have issues controlling. Plus… Jareth’s home was warded. The only magic happening inside was initiated by him or Kevin on the rare occasions his gift decided to work.

Standing, Jareth stretched. He needed to leave today. He had not heard from William or George although George would no doubt be busy with his mate, doing all the things Jareth wanted to do with his own.

    That would have to wait.

Olivia disliked being woken up at the best of times. She preferred her sleep just like she liked her carbs—un-messed with…

Only this time it wasn’t anyone’s fault. No this was all on her bladder. The pain hit her right in the pelvis, shooting her awake like she
