Prudence Prendergast Private Investigator and owner of THE PRUDENT P. I., stood in the doorway of her cozy Cape Cod apartment and surveyed the landscape. The ‘coast was clear’ which meant her nosey next-door neighbor, Mrs. Houlihan was still asleep., she hoped.

Wrapping her fuzzy pink robe closely around her slim body, she slid out the front door, looked to her left, then her right as she bounced down the walkway.

The Cape Cod Times was languishing there on the damp crushed oyster shells where the paper delivery had thrown it earlier.

She had it in her sights....

Now to lay claim before Mrs. Houlihan got to it first. This was a daily skirmish between them.

Pru knew it was unfair to tease her neighbor, but she did want to see the headlines first. The Times was delivered to her office daily, but Delicia would have already read and dissected it. To have another copy delivered here was really a waste. She did have it on her phone, problem was she rarely looked at that device until she was in the parking lot at her office.

Pru stooped and grabbed the paper, tucked it under her robe, and winced at the dampness against her pajama top. She turned and ran back up the walk, her fuzzy slippers sliding on the wet shells. She reached her front entry as she heard Mrs. Houlihan scream from her half-open front door,

    Put my newspaper back, Prudence,

Certainly, Mrs. Houlihan, I promise to return it as soon as I finish reading the headlines.

Why don't you buy your own damn copies?

I will, I promise! Pru said in her most convincing voice and closed her door softly behind her.

Pulling the offending item from under her robe, she shook it open and scanned the front page.

Same old politics, she skimmed the rest of the page, then her glance was directed to a third column headline further down on the sheet...

BODY OF PROMINENT AUTHOR FOUND IN PANERA THIS MORNING

    Police investigating!

A grainy photo of a body slumped over on one of the tables, an open book beside his laptop.

Pru exhaled a long, low whistle. Well, now that will stir up the pot.  She continued to scan the front page. Nothing new except that. She knew there was a large writing community here on the Cape. Her grannie was a writer and also a member of an active writing group. This would certainly have a grave impact.

Pru folded the paper back up carefully, tucked it snugly under her robe, and slid back out the door. She hopped over the flower bed, rang Mrs. Houlihan's bell, and dropped the prize down on the doormat. Then, she ran back into her apartment and was about to slam the door when she heard...

Darn you, Prudence! I'll get you for this!

Pru grinned, closed her entry door and raced up the stairs to get ready for work.

Pru pulled into her designated office parking space and shut off the engine. Her Mini Cooper was almost a year old, and she loved it, completely. Especially at this time of the morning.
