Alpha's Unexpected Luna - Torry Smith

CHAPTER 2 Bumped into her nightmare

Ashina spat out blood, panting profusely. She blinked her eyes repeatedly, struggling to try and remember who the woman before her was. From her regalia, she knew the woman was royalty.

Danciana stretched forth her soft hands and arranged the hair on Ashina's head. You like it? Then she pulled her hair, laughing hysterically while Ashina cried out.

You insulted my son, how convenient. Danciana took a breath. So now you cannot talk?

Ashina wanted to talk, but she couldn't. She forced herself but ended up coughing out blood. Her pathetic condition didn't stop Danciana from slapping her across the face. Speak! She roared.

I don't think she can speak, my queen. Boris said, carefully observing Ashina. She is in a very bad state.

Untie her. She instructed. Lock her in the pig's cage with little food and water. Stale bread. .

Boris bowed. As you wish my queen.

Danciana strode out of the prison.

Gonzalo furrowed his brows as his mother reached the throne room. How is it going mother? He asked. Can I see her now?

Danciana shake her head. No, she is unconscious at the moment.

    "Already unc

onscious when we haven't started?" Gonzalo scoffed.

Their conversation was interrupted when a guard walked in, whispering into Danciana's ears. When he was done, Danciana ushered him to leave. She looked up at Gonzalo, her countenance changed.

What is it mother? Gonzalo asked.

The gods are with us. Danciana smiled. Long live the moon goddess!

What happened? Gonzalo asked with a frown. He didn't believe in any god or goddess. He stopped believing in them a long time ago.

Her name is Ashina Diego. Danciana said, raising her shoulders dramatically. Does that remind you of anyone or anything?

No, Gonzalo shook his head. Who is she?

Follow me. Danciana demonstrated with her hands.

She walked to a golden decorated wall, and stopped in front. Danciana pressed some buttons and the wall shifted, opening and revealing a transparent list.

This is my black book. Gonzalo stated, staring at his mother in confusion. Whoever that is in this book, is as good as dead.

Diego Walmart.. Danciana bit down on her lower lip, wondering whether or not to continue. That commoner is Diego Walmart's daughter. Diego, your late father's slave, that was excommunicated and banished with his family, for murdering your father. She pointed at a name on the list. Here's their family name.

Ahhh!!! Gonzalo screamed, then pulled out his sword in anger. That daughter of a murderer!

Danciana was fast enough to signal the guards to hold him down.

Gonzalo cocked an eyebrow, groaning. "Tell your guards to get their poverty infectious dirty hard hands off me!'

Danciana again gave signals to let him go. Hold on, Zalo.. She stood in front of him.

Mother I will not! He raised his voice. Finally, I will give my father the justice he deserved, the justice I swore on his grave to give him! Mother, move out of my way.

Don't be foolish! Danciana scolded. You want to give her an easy death? Common! You want to go and behead her straight away? That is easy death! That is kindness to a murderer.

Gonzalo exhaled slowly, his tempers dropping. His brains started to reason in different angels.

You won't kill her, at least not now. Danciana said. She will work as a servant in this palace for the rest of her life! Day, night, under the rain, sun, in pains and tears..I will take it upon myself to torture her..she will die slowly and painfully.

I cannot stand her sight mother! Gonzalo spat in despise. I hate her!

Okay, fine. Do whatever you want. After all you're all grown now and can make decisions for yourself, mine don't matter anymore. Danciana said.

Fine! Gonzalo frowned. Do whatever you want with her, I don't just want to set my eyes on her again.

    ***

Danciana instructed the guards to nail Ashina to a large wooden crossand, for five hours. After that she listed the punishments that should be given to her, which included, rat torture, heretics fork and tongue tearer.

She took pleasure in watching Ashina bleed and cry in pain.

Please spare my life. Ashina cried out. I promise I will do whatever you ask of me. I beg you.

Why did you come back? Gonzalo demanded. He was the one to ask, ignoring her groans. To finish what your murderous wretched father couldn't complete?

I've never been in this town before, I don't know what you are saying. Ashina responded.

    Lying Swain! Gonzalo yelled.

Ashina's heart pounded hard, over fear, anxiety and confusion. She had never been in that town all her life. Were they mistaken her for someone, maybe her look alike or they only needed a reason to torture her, not minding creating false stories?

I don't know what you saying. Ashina repeated.

Gonzalo made attempt to move closer to her but Danciana held him back.

Don't give her the privilege. Danciana said. I'll take it from here. She walked closer to Ashina, then pulled out hot iron that has been placed in fire over hours, she lifted the iron with all her strength, she pressed the iron on Ashina's face.

Gonzalo smiled in excitement as Ashina cried loudly. This was a lot better, watching her in pain everyday, this was the best way to give his father the justice he deserved.

I ask again, Gonzalo glared at her with deadly eyes. Why did you come back, to kill me? I know your intentions, I just need to hear it from you, so confess! If you confess, I'll lessen your punishment.

I wish I could agree, if it were true I'd agree. Ashina pushed the words out, in pain.

Where's the rest of your family members? Danciana asked in a very provocative and aggressive tone.

They're at.. Ashina stopped there. Her brains clicked at once. She would be a fool to tell this heartless souls where her family were at.

Continue, Gonzalo said with authority. They're where?

    I..I don't know. Ashina answered.

That's it! Gonzalo faced his mother. Torture her until she dies! Lying Swain! He stormed out in anger.

    ***

Long live your majesty. Lupe said as she entered the large room, after a bow.

    My princess.. Danciana smiled.

Lupe slid her hands into the back pack pockets of her skirt, which had the effect of thrusting her breasts tight against her lacy T. She handed Danciana some sweets. My mother made them herself. She said, her face flattered as she smiled.

Send my regards. Danciana set the sweets aside, on the tray pan, placed on the large table before her.

Lupe flashed Gonzalo a flirtatious smile as she made way to sit opposite him. Greetings my prince.

Danciana was obviously impressed by Princess Lupe. The princess was not only beautiful, but well groomed and from a rich home.

Gonzalo didn't pay much attention to her. When his mother came to him informing him about Princess Lupe being his destined mate, and he needed to marry her soonest. First he tried to be stubborn and refused the marriage proposal but as usual, his mother found ways of making him change his mind. She reminded him marriage was necessary, so he could be crowned the Alpha King.

To Gonzalo, the only interesting thing about Princess Lupe was that she came from a very wealthy and powerful royal home, which was good for his business. His mother went out of her way to make wedding preparations and fix a date.

The wedding ceremony was in a week! Yet Gonzalo didn't feel the slightest of love for his soon to be bride.

Lupe on her part spent her childhood dreaming about getting married to a handsome, charming prince someday, and become a real housewife, the Queen of Queens. When she discovered she was mated to the great Alpha Prince, Gonzalo, her joy knew no bound.

Mother, my wedding dress is ready, you would not believe how many karate gold is on it! Lupe laughed.

Tell me. Danciana smiled, glancing briefly at Gonzalo. See? She was the prize, a potential daughter in-law.

Fifty! Lupe screamed in excitement, obviously trying to impress Gonzalo. Fifty karate gold.

I can't wait to see you in that beautiful dress my child. Danciana said, stretching out her hand across the table to gently squeeze Lupe's fingers. May the goddess be with you.

And you too mother. Lupe smiled. My prince, is your wedding suit ready?

It should. Gonzalo answered, uninterested in the conversation. Mother I have business to attend to. He rose to his feet then looked at Lupe. My lady, enjoy the rest of your time.

You too, prince charming. Lupe smiled.

Gonzalo stormed out of the room, very quickly.

Boris pushed Ashina into the smelly small storage room. This is your new home. Get some rest, and in thirty minutes, be at the kitchen to scrub the floors. Boris instructed then left the storage room.

Ashina laid on the floor, wincing in pain. She was badly wounded and bleeding. She glanced up when she heard someone's footsteps.

If you want to stay alive, then you must avoid my son, he will kill you on sight. Understood? Danciana asked.

Yes your highness. Ashina managed to let the words out.

You are now a slave to this palace, forever. Danciana stated.

Ashina nodded her head understanding everything that was said. She had left her luxurious city to come to this small town for holiday, to unwind and enjoy. She was in for a long ride, sponsored by some ruthless alpha prince and his witch of a mother.

CHAPTER 3 SHALL I SLIT HER THROAT?

Hello.. hello..? Ashina bit her lips in disappointment when she discovered no one had picked the call. Pick up! Please! Uncle please pick up! Her hands trembled as she struggled to hold the telephone in her hands.

She was cleaning the passage when she saw a telephone, she tossed the mop aside and reached for the telephone. She dialed her uncle's number repeatedly but no one answered.

She jerked and froze at the spot when she heard footsteps accompanied with a loud laugh. She recognized the voice. It belonged to the Alpha Prince.

Who were you trying to call? He asked, moving closer to her. Your mother? He nodded. Hmmm, interesting, please go on and call him, call the murderer! I want to speak with him!

The telephone fell down from Ashina's trembling hands. Her whole body was squeaking.

Pick up the telephone, call him, invite him to come over for dinner at your friends place. Gonzalo ordered.

My father is dead. Ashina said, her lips shaking. I was trying to call my uncle.

Gonzalo smiled. It's good for you that your father is dead, I would have.. Gonzalo paused when he saw his mother walk towards them. Oh mother, He said. She was trying to call for help.

Danciana walked to Ashina, glaring at her with resentment. I see you are not tired of suffering and torture..

No please.. Ashina fell to her knees begging in tears. Please, I am sorry.. it'll never happen again.

Who were you trying to call, the police? Danciana demanded.

No, my uncle. Ashina answered sharply.

She said her leprosy infected father is dead. Gonzalo stated.

    Lucky him. Danciana responded.

She might be lying.. Gonzalo said. It runs in the veins, it is a generational curse.

    Guards! Danciana called out.

Ashina fell on the floor, crying and trembling, she already knew what awaited her, next. Torture.

Give her two hours of the tub torture, Danciana instructed the guards. After that have her rest for thirty minutes, with stale bread, no water.

Yes your majesty. The guards prostrated, dragging Ashina away.

Please have mercy on me your majesty! Ashina cried aloud as the guards pulled her away.

Did your maggot poverty stricken father have mercy on me when he killed my father?! Did you have mercy on me when you walked back into this town to kill me?! Gonzalo yelled.

I have no idea what you are talking about! Ashina's voice was distant. My late father was an honorable man, he was celebrated where I come from and still celebrated as a legend!

Gonzalo pulled out his sword in rage. Legendary murderer!

Danciana stood in his way, shaking her head disapprovingly. Don't.

Let me split her throat, mother. Gonzalo charged. No amount of torture will tame her!

Relax. Danciana said. I will tame her. Now prepare, your wedding is in couple of days.

    ***

What do you think of the Alpha Prince? Lupe asked her maid, Jane. Handsome right? She smiled dreamily. Lupe was back to her father's house, sitted in her bathtub.

    Jane gently massaged her feets.

    Jane? Lupe called out.

My princess.. Jane answered, applying essential oil on her feet.

I said, what do you think about the Alpha Prince, my soon to be husband? Lupe repeated the question.

Do you want my honest opinion? Jane asked.

    Yes. Lupe replied excitedly.

He is rude, proud, disrespectful, arrogant and ruthless.. Jane didn't finish her sentence when Lupe hit her across the face in anger.

How dare you?! She screamed. Blasphemy!

I'm sorry my princess.. Jane knelt to apologize.

Lupe kicked Jane into the hot bath tube, then emptied a gallon of detergent into the bath tube. Jane cried out, wiping and closing her eyes. She struggled to breath, see and get out of the bathtub.

You will stay there until you drown! Lupe yelled. Wretched slave! You can never have someone as honorable as my prince!

Chuchin traced the voice of someone sobbing, until she discovered the cage where Ashina was locked in. Poor Ashina laid in the cage, sobbing with her last strength. Chuchin's father worked as a prison guard. She had come to bring food for her father, she had Ashina I'm mind while embarked to the palace.

The news about Ashina's imprisonment was everywhere in town. Chuc

Hey.. Chuchin whispered, forcing food into the cage. Fried chicken and baked potatoes, with water. Ashina.. She called warily.

Ashina turned in pains to look at her. She could barely talk. Hey.. She managed to say. Chu.. She stopped, trying to remember her name.

    "Chuchin..the scrabble book selle

Ashina found strength from nowhere and sat up, hurriedly devouring the food like a beast.

I warned you..there is no one to prevent injustice in this town.

Ashina gave her the most alluring smile. Yes you did, I should have listened. Thank you for the food, but how did you get here?

My father is the chief prison guard, I came to see him today. Chuchin said.

Oh..I see, thank you. Ashina said gratefully, bursting into tears. That means the news about me is everywhere, why hasn't anyone called the police?

Prince Gonzalo controls them. Chuchin answered. Don't you understand, he is evil.. She muttered an expletive.

Ashina heard the anger and pain in her voice. What did he do to you? She asked.

He banished my mother after she refused to keep quiet when his personal slave, Boris, raped me.

What?! Ashina exclaimed in shock. How can he treat his subjects like this? I'm sorry you had to go through that.

I have to go now. Chuchin said. Avoid arguing with him or the queen mother, whatever they say agree to it and apologize. It will lessen your punishment.

How can I agree to false narratives and stories about me? Ashina asked.

You don't listen, do you? Chuchin shook her head disappointedly. I have to go now, don't say a word about my visit to anyone.

Please will you help me Chuchin? Ashina pleaded.

What do you want? Chuchin looked around to make sure no one was in sight.

Help me call my uncle and tell him I'm in trouble, explain the situation to him and let him know I'm in this town..tell him to hurry and..

Chuchin didn't let her finish, she cut her off. I can't.

    Why?

Because he will kill me if he finds out I helped you, my father doesn't even know I came here. I'm sorry but I can't help you.

No one will find out, I promise you.

    I'm sorry.

Ashina swallowed hard at the refusal. Can I make the call myself?

    No. He will find out.

    How?

I will advise you not to even involve your family because he will enslave them too when they come to rescue you. And then he will trace to find out how your uncle heard about it, then what next?

Ashina scratched her hair. Nothing of that sort will happen..I promise..

I'm sorry, this is your cross, carry it without involving your family if you love them. Chuchin hurriedly left the cage.

Ashina fell to the floor, crying uncontrollably.

    ***

Gonzalo was in his bedroom drafting out plans when his mother walked in. He was going through papers and important document. He walked to his task board outlining his game plan.

    Zalo.. Danciana called out.

Come in mother. Gonzalo concentrated on the board.

What are you doing? Danciana inquired.

Drafting the perfect plan, we're attacking the rogues tonight. Gonzalo said firmly.

Tonight, is it not rather sudden? Danciana tried to suggest. Besides your wedding is close, you shouldn't be going to war, let the soldiers go alone. I don't want you with a bruised face on your big day.

No mother, I'm going with them. Gonzalo said with finality in his voice. I want to wipe this particular pack of rogues myself. Their leader has challenged me to a battle and I accepted.

Danciana placed a hand on his shoulder. I trust you.

Don't worry mother, your son will be fine and victorious. Gonzalo assured her.

What do you think of Princess Lupe? Danciana smiled.

Gonzalo shrugged. She is a beautiful princess.

And? Danciana inched to hear more.

That's all, she's beautiful. Gonzalo muttered. He was starting to get irritated by the discussion. He wondered the nicest way to get rid of her.

You don't feel anything for her? That's strange.

No it's not. What were you expecting? Gonzalo dropped his pen, looking at his mother. I feel nothing for her.

Because you have not searched deep down in your heart.. search your heart and soul and you will find..

Blood.. Gonzalo sharply said. It's only blood you will find in my heart.

She is your mate! Very soon she will become your Luna. Danciana scolded.

I know, have I said otherwise, the essence of this mating thing is for us to get married, yeah? Have I refused? I'll give you and your goddess what you want, so relax.

    Zalo..

Mother please not now, I have a war to plan. Gonzalo said dismissively, then turned to focus on his board.

CHAPTER 4 A FRIEND OR TRAP?

Retreat! Zyan, leader of the rogues commanded. Retreat! To the tent! He roared, running backwards.

The war between Gonzalo's army and Zyan's was brutal and fierce.

Gonzalo stood quiet and still, glaring at Zyan in a murderous way. He watched his army slaughter Zyan's subjects like birds. Zyan stood at the opposite end, also glaring at him while their men fought.

Gonzalo pulled out his sword. I give you the last chance to surrender, bow down and kiss my feet and I shall put an end to the killing of your subjects. Agree to serve as my slave in my palace and I shall spare you lives.

Never! Zyan yelled, then took to his heels. Gonzalo went after him, Zyan's speed was unmatchable and in no time Gonzalo lost track of him.

Like their leader, so did they rogues run into hiding for their lives, some were fast enough to escape death while others were unfortunate and slaughtered.

Gonzalo was breathing rapidly in anger, looking around, trying to catch sight of Zyan but he didn't. Suddenly Zyan jumped on his neck from a tree and used his paw print to scratch Gonzalo's cheeks.

Gonzalo howled in pain and anger. Zyan poked his paw print into Gonzalo's eyes and he grasped in pain. Before Gonzalo's army could reach him, Zyan fled.

Working under the queen mother's instructions that whenever Gonzalo was hurt in battle, they were to retreat, they surrounded Gonzalo and made plans to retreat from battle.

Danciana ran to meet her son when the guards brought him inside the palace.

My son.. Danciana sobbed. What happened to my son?

Mother I am fine. Gonzalo said, pushing the guards away from him. I am fine! He grunted. I just need eyedrop, food and rest.

Gonzalo's condition was not critical. He was with few bruises but overall he was fine. You may all leave and return to your post. He ordered.

I told you not to go, Danciana sighed. It's bad luck to go to battle when your wedding is in few days.

Gonzalo ignored his mother, panting heavily.

    ***

Ashina was scrubbing the wet floor when a beautiful lady walked into the bedroom. She studied the regalia to know if she was royalty, her guess was right, she immediately assumed the beauty was a princess, maybe Gonzalo's sister.

    Good afternoon princess. Ashina greeted.

Afternoon. Morgan replied walking to her mirror stand. She looked at her mirror wall and from there noticed Ashina wincing in pain as she washed the floor.

    Go. Morgan said.

My princess? Ashina looked up at her. Do you need me to get you something?

Morgan shook her. No. Just leave, don't worry, I will have someone else do it, you look bad.

Ashina stared at her in bewilderment, since her stay in the palace, this was the first person to treat her with niceness.

No I will do it, your mother won't hear of it. Ashina continued scrubbing the floor.

Morgan looked at her from the mirror with empathy. Just leave it, my room is clean enough. She insisted. Go, nothing will happen.

Ashina looked up at her gratefully. Thank you Princess. She struggled to walk outside the room.

    ***

Ashina laid by palace well sleeping. She looked for the best place to hide and rest her head without being seen by the queen mother. She was thankful to the princess for relieving her for awhile.

Ashina slowly opened her eyes when a guard splashed cold water on her. Danciana as expected stood, looking at her.

Ashina jumped to her feet bowing down. Your majesty..

Why are you here? Danciana demanded.

    I.. Ashina stammered.

You were supposed to be mopping Morgan's bedroom! Danciana thundered.

I'm sorry your majesty..I.. She stopped talking. It was a set up after all. The princess had intentionally pushed her into the Queen's trap. Just when she thought someone was different. She sobbed at her assumptions.

Give her ten strokes of the cane. Danciana instructed the guards. For each time you disobey, there will be consequences. Danciana said, walking away with her maids.

Please don't drag or push me, I will go. Ashina said running towards the torture stand.

    ***

Gonzalo was passing by the storage room when he heard weeping, obviously by Ashina. Out of curiosity he walked closer and pushed open the door. He stretched his neck to look at her.

Hmmm, this is so refreshing. Gonzalo said. Very refreshing, loser. He spat disdainfully. The Hunter has been hunted. He widened his shoulders proudly.

Ashina looked up at him in confusion, she was tempted to lash at him but remembered the torture that awaited her, so she ignored.

Unfortunately you won't be as lucky as your father, you won't be lucky enough to see death. Gonzalo strode out the storage room.

Morgan was somewhere around, eavesdropping on the conversation. The moment she saw Gonzalo leave, she creeped into the storage room.

    Hey! Morgan called.

Ashina looked her then laughed. You again, thank you! For the set up, nice. The smiled disappeared when she finished talking.

I swear to you I really wanted to help you, Morgan said convincingly. I had no idea you would get in trouble. I'm sorry.

Stop lying to me, stop pretending. If you want to punish me do so directly. Ashina snapped.

Morgan closed the storage door. If I wanted to punish you I wouldn't need to hide to do so.

Maybe to play with my feelings. Ashina let out a sob. Please leave before your mother comes here.

She is not my mother. Morgan said, sitting beside Ashina.

What do you mean, I thought you are a princess.. Ashina asked in a confused tone.

    I am her daughter in-law.

    You are the prince's wife?

Yes, but not to Prince Gonzalo, but to Prince Seb.

    Who is Prince Seb?

The second Prince of the royal family.

Ashina nodded indicating she understood. Is he also like Gonzalo?

Never you ever address any of the royal members by their names again, you will be punished. My husband is nothing like him.

    Where is he?

Morgan's face suddenly saddened. He traveled.

Princess Morgan I need your help.. please! Ashina held her hands, then let go of them suddenly. I'm sorry.. please help me.

    I can't help you escape.

No, I'm not trying to escape. I want to put a call across to my uncle and inform him about my whereabouts. Please help me.

Morgan handed her cell phone to Ashina.Be fast!

Ashina's fingers moved faster than a fly. She dialed her uncle's number and he picked.

    Hello, uncle?

Ashina! Her uncle shouted in the phone. Why did you do this to us? We have been trying to reach you, where are you?

Ashina sobbed gently. Uncle I'm in trouble.. She cried.

Where are you? The voice demanded, alarmed.

    Poldark pack..the..

Poldark what?! That evil town, what took you there? That town is evil, get out of there now before it's too late.

Uncle it's too late, I'm held slave at the palace..

Ashina.. Her uncle groaned in pain. What have you done to yourself?

I was not informed.. Ashina tried to defend herself.

    Did you ask me?

Uncle please I don't have time, hurry and come rescue me.. She said in between sobs. They have done unspeakable damage to my body. Uncle please..

Get yourself together, I will see what I can do, whose cell phone is this?

Ashina looked at Morgan before answering the question. A kind person, please do not call it after now, please come save me.

The phone dropped dead. Both exchanged weird looks.

Should I be honest with you? Morgan asked, collecting her cell phone and settling it in the inner wear of her dress.

    Ashina nodded.

He won't come for you. Morgan said.

Ashina scoffed. That's not true, that man is like my father, he has been a father to me since I lost my dad..he loves me, he will come for me! You can't tell me otherwise.

Let your faith carry you. Morgan simply replied. I hope he comes.

Do you know why they hate me so much?

Morgan looked at her surprised. You don't know?

Ashina shook her head. No I don't.

    Are you pretending?

No I'm not, I swear! I guess there's a mix up, confusion somewhere..maybe my lookalike or..

It's not even about you. Morgan cut her short. It's about your father, your late father..

Is there something about my father I don't know?

Your father's past is the reason for your present predicament. He was Alpha King Hemming's slave, but he betrayed the kingdom and killed the king. He even wanted to kill his sons too but he ran out of luck.

My father? Ashina asked in disbelief.

Yes..Poldark pack at that time were forbidden to kill their own so your father was banished with his entire family.

Ashina nodded attentively. That was before I was born?

No, according to what I heard you were already in existence, maybe five years old.. can't you remember anything? Your childhood in Poldark?

No, only that sometimes I feel like I've been here before...

Now you know why the prince and queen mother hates you.

    Do you hate me?

    No.

    Why?

You were innocent, why should I hate you for the sins of your father?

Their discussion ended abruptly when the storage door pushed open.

Gonzalo stood by the door glaring at both.

    CHAPTER 5 THE MARRIAGE RITES

Morgan double hit Ashina across the face, pulling her hair. Why did you come back?! She yelled! Answer me!

Ashina understood the game, she played along. You have been asking me this same question for the longest time, I don't know what you are talking of.

Morgan kicked her on the face. Liar!

Gonzalo smiled, impressed. Oh Morgan, you never cease to make me proud. I heard voices and I decided to come and see whom the swain was conversing with. Good job Morgan! Mother will hear of this.

How can I spare the blood that took the life of my father in-law? Morgan said, giving Ashina the apologetic look.

I give you the go ahead to do to her as you please. Gonzalo said then turned to leave.

Morgan made sure Gonzalo was gone before she bent to Ashina and whispered. I'm sorry. She huffed.

I understand, thank you. Ashina whispered back.

Morgan hurried out of the storage room, feeling guilty already and sick of the horrible smell.

Ashina leaned on the wall, relieved and hopeful her uncle was coming to rescue her from the webs of death. She felt an immense relief, but it took a moment for her thudding heart to subside to normal.

Color drained from Ashina's face. She thought of the possibility of her father being a murderer, then tried to force herself to see if she could bring back her childhood memories of the palace. She closed her eyes and meditating. She soberly reflected on her situation.

All she could remember were echoes of two small kids playing around the palace with a scrabble book.

She forced her eyes open, weeping. How could they say her own father was a murderer? She pounded over the possibility but only convinced herself there was mix up somewhere.

Suddenly an idea clipped into her mind, she dried her tears and hurriedly left the storage room.

She raced to one of palace exist gate. She smiled mischievously at the palace guard.

I'm on errand by the queen mother. She said.

How long? The guard asked dryly.

As fast as possible. She replied.

The guard flung the gate open. Ashina smiled making for the exist. Finally! She was out of the palace! She ran as fast as her feet could carry her, and only stopped when she saw a lonely straight path. She was optimistic she'd find help.

She gazed up at the sky, it was lovely. One of those clear, sunny days. She sat on a big stone, tucked her skirt modestly about her knees, closed her eyes and held her face up to the sun. Dear moon goddess, she missed her father, her uncle, her whole family. She needed help urgently.

Ashina? Chuchin moved closer to her.

Ashina spun about and looked down at Chuchin. Her heart skipped. Are they coming after me? Please help me serve as a distraction. She panicked, close to tears.

After you? Chuchin chuckled. No one can come after you here.

Ashina laughed. That means I've crossed the Poldark boundary? I'm free?

Chuchin looked confused. What are you saying?

I deceived the guard and made him open one of the exist doors, did you escape too? Ashina asked, naive.

Chuchin shook her head in pity. Darling..you are still in Poldark, even closer to the palace, this straight path leads to the palace garden. That gate is not an exist out of Poldark, the only exist out of Poldark is through an underground. That's the much I know from my father about the exist door of Poldark. All other routes are heavily guarded.

So you're saying... Ashina broke into tears and sweat.

Yes. Chuchin nodded. You better pluck some fruits around and walk through that path so you'll reach the palace faster, then you take the fresh fruits to the queen mother and tell her you went to get some fresh fruits for her.

    Chuchin took a swipe at Ashina's sweat-streaked face with a snowy-white handkerchief.

Unbelievable! She was trapped forever! She'd put the feeling down to an unnamed yearning.

Let's go, I'll help you. Chuchin offered, jumping to pluck some mangoes. Give up this ambition of trying to escape, it will lead you to early death.

I'd pick death of this, over and over again. Ashina spat. She managed to pierce her grief and sense of reserve. The forces that rules her life right now were bigger than her.

    ***

Ashina washed the fruits and placed them neatly on the dinning.

Each time she remembered her discussion with Chuchin and Morgan on separate occasions, her heart raced. What if her uncle would never come? She decided to wave the bad thoughts away and keep her inner mind and spirit positive.

Thank you.. Morgan muttered..slave girl.. She added immediately to conceal suspicion when Danciana raised her eyebrows.

Danciana gave Morgan an impressed smile. She looked at Ashina.

Here, have some avocado pear.. Danciana said to Ashina, teasingly. It's an order.

Ashina stretched her hands towards Danciana and received the avocado pear, she smiled self consciously, then bit the avocado pear. It was bad and terrible. Spoilt! There were maggots filled in it.

Go on, eat everything! Danciana ordered. Eat, that is the only fruit that befits a slave.

Ashina ate the avocado, awfully quiet.

I must warn you, swain, my soon to be In-laws will be coming here tomorrow and they will stay until the wedding, please don't catch their eyes and spoil their appetite. Danciana warned. Do you copy?

    Yes your majesty. Ashina nodded.

Great. Danciana said, then bit a mango sensually. This is good, I wasn't aware the mangoes were already ripened. Good job Ashina. Continue like this and you will be greater than your father in serving the palace..well only that you won't succeed in killing anyone.

Ashina held back the tears. She wasn't worth her precious tears.

A memory quickly flashed into her mind. She saw a girl of about five years old and a boy of that same age play round the same dinning she was standing in presently. The kids looked happy and very interested in their play.

She came back to reality when she felt hot soup pour all over her face. As expected, it was Danciana!

Slave girl! Where was your mind? Danciana rolled her eyes. Perhaps you were lost in your witches coven.

I am not a witch! The words flew out of Ashina's mouth before she could control her tongue. The very minute it came out she regretted her existence. No no no no! I mean yes! I'm a witch! I'm a witch! I'm a witch! Ashina sang repeatedly, hoping to escape torture.

Danciana laughted hysterically, enjoying Ashina's misery.

    ***

The days went by and Ashina's uncle didn't come. Everyday she looked forward to seeing him but she didn't. She exhaled hard, struggling to agree that Princess Morgan was right, he'd never come.

She sat downstairs chewing on cherries. Today was Prince Gonzalo's wedding and she was warned to stay out of sight. The wedding help upstairs, in the palace hall, while she sat downstairs, close to the hall, glaring at the hall window.

She wondered who agreed to marry such a mean and ruthless man. Was she forced? Or she was marrying him out of her own will and accord. Of course she was forced, as the Alpha's mate she had no choice than to marry him.

Ashina looked up at the window, she caught a glimpse of the bride and pitied her. Alphas like Gonzalo were the type to assault their mates. If she had an opportunity to commune with the moon goddess, she'd intercede for the she wolves and beg for them to be allowed to choose their mates.

    ***

As tradition demands, take a bowl of this powder color and empty on your bride to be. Whoever you empty the color on, you will take her home as your wife. The priest instructed and everyone cheered in the hall.

Gonzalo's eye brow puckered. He couldn't wait to get done with the marriage rites and return to his normal life. His mother had made the last few weeks miserable for him with her wedding preparations.

He gave Lupe a cool glance. She was looking absolutely stunning, good for her. She made a beautiful bride. He quickly shot his mother a tired glance, she nodded, beaming with smiles, giving him signals to hurry up with the marriage rites.

Throwing the color was the most interesting, tense and important part of the marriage rites in Poldark.

Lupe stood by the door, smiling excitedly as Gonzalo walked towards her with the bowl of color.

The crowd went wild when Gonzalo tripped and lost balance. There was an uproar. His bowl of color flew down the window and everything emptied on Ashina's body. Danciana raced to the window to see the end.

Ashina spat out the color, trying to wipe off some from her eyes, unaware of the significance. Was this another sort of punishment? She pondered. The color irritated her eyes a lot. She looked up only to see the murderous look Gonzalo and Danciana gave.

CHAPTER 6 A LUNA BY FATE

Your majesty, I'm afraid nothing can be done.. The priest said, pointing at Ashina. She is now his bride..

That murderer! Pig! Swain! Wretch! Gonzalo yelled, running down the stairs. He raced to where Ashina was sitting, pulling her roughly to her feet.

You have failed! Gonzalo laughed, his eyes glowing with pride. He pushed her to the ground and rubbed his hands together while he spoke. You want to be my wife? You want to be royalty?

Ashina looked at Gonzalo with the most confused expression.

The priest and his mother came down to join them.

Nothing can be done.. The priest said, shaking his head.

But she is not his mate! She is a slave, how can my son, the prince marry a slave? Danciana said. "It can't be done! She is from a family of murderers, an outcast!

Nothing can be done. They are now husband and wife! At the priest's declaration, Gonzalo and Danciana knew nothing could be done.

Ashina looked around, trying to understand what was going on.

Lupe cried aloud, rolling her body on the floor. The servants did their best to control her but she went out of control.

Gonzalo turned to face his mother. See why I told you to kill her? He asked, at the same time thinking of how to un-do the abomination.

Gonzalo studied the humiliation and disappointment on Lupe's parents. They had arrived in their best regalia, with passion to wed off their daughter to him.

His breath choked in his throat when he looked around and saw Lupe, running almost mad. Even though he felt nothing for her, he knew she was already head over heels for him.

Unfortunately, he would do something, if he could.

Zalo, follow me. Danciana said, giving Ashina an angry glare.

Gonzalo followed his mother. They walked up to the palace throne room.

Hey.. Chuchin said in a soothing voice. With her blonde curly hair and deliberately casual dress, she always presented the epitome of relaxed confidence.

What is happening, what did I do again? Ashina asked, trying to brush off the color from her body.

We gathered today for the Prince's marriage rites.. Chuchin said.

Ashina interrupted. So? Why I'm I caught in the middle?

    He married you! Chuchin said.

What? Stop talking nonsense or you will get in trouble.. Ashina replied.

I am serious. In our tradition whoever the groom empties the color on is his bride..the prince tripped and fell..and the color landed on you.. Chuchin explained.

    Ashina scoffed. Big joke!

And our tradition does not permit divorce..you are now the Prince's bride! You are now his Luna! Chuchin said, wrapping up her summary. ?

No way! I am not accepting any of that! Me marry that.. She looked around then whispered to Chuchin. That ruthless prince? Never!

I think you should be happy. Chuchin responded. The moon goddess is afterall fighting your battles?

I'd prefer to be dead, than marry your prince. Ashina growled. I am going to wash this stupid color off my body and pretend this madness didn't happen.

Then you'd be a fool, plus, no amount of chemical will wash off that color from your skin, it'll be there for a few days, it is the symbol of a newly married bride. Chuchin stated.

Whatever! If it doesn't go off, I'll peel my skin! Ashina said, irritation filled in her voice. She quickly walked away.

    ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?***

Mother don't tell me to calm down! This is your fault! Gonzalo paced round the throne room in anger.

Danciana pulled out Gonzalo's sword, then handed it over to him. Kill me then!

Gonzalo looks at his mother, sighing. Put that away.. He exhaled hard, bringing down his voice. Put it away mother..

Are you sure? But I have made mistake and I must be punished. Danciana insisted.

    Put it away.. Gonzalo repeated.

Maybe I should use it and slit her throat and give your father the justice he deserves, but what kind of Justice will that be? A two minutes justice? Is that what your father deserves?

Gonzalo frowned. What do I do now? That swain can never be my Luna! Gonzalo yelled. There has be something I can do to get rid of her!

If you raise your voice one more time then I will leave you. Danciana threatened.

What will you have me do? Gonzalo looked at his mother.

I will have you to go out there and tell your subjects you have accepted fate..

Gonzalo cut her off. Accepted that wretch you mean? Oh never!

Listen to me, just pretend you have accepted her, and dismiss the crowd. It'll only take a matter of days and I will solve this problem. Danciana assured.

How do you intend to solve it? Gonzalo asked curiously.

I will consult the deities of Poldark myself..I will intercede on your behalf. Something must be done! But first, give me time and follow all my instructions.

    Gonzalo nodded attentively.

Follow me. Danciana led him downstairs to address the situation.

Good citizens of Poldark! As you all know, fate has decided to play a very tricky game on me today. But as a true and brave leader, I accept the challenge. I accept the slave girl as my bride, as we know, it is an abomination for couples to divorce, I will not be the first in my generation to commit an abomination in the land and bring upon us, curses.

Long live the prince! Long live the prince!! The crowd yelled in joy and excitement. They admired his respect for the customs and traditions of their land. The first alpha prince in their history to marry a slave.

Danciana moved to Ashina, whispering in her ears. You better behave or else..you know what will follow. She smiled at the villagers, waving at them.

Princess Lupe stood afar glaring at Gonzalo with tears in her eyes. Her family dragged her out of the scene, furious. Her father swore to pay back Gonzalo in his own coin for humiliating him and his subjects.

    ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?***

Ashina sat in the storage room, weeping. She couldn't believe her uncle would sleep on her. She instantly stopped crying when she heard footsteps approach the storage room.

Gonzalo stood by the door, spitting on the floor. Stench of poverty and misery..

Being your bride is the worst torture anyone can give to me.. Ashina said, looking directly into his eyes. Fearless, the worse had happened for all she knew.

You think I accept you as my Luna? You think this is fate? Gonzalo chuckled. Now let me tell you all fate has in store for, misery, poverty and all the worse.. you think I will let you close? Infectious Swain!

Then don't waste time talking, annul the marriage! I challenge you to annul the marriage! Ashina spat, her voice filled with hate and anger.

Watch and see. Gonzalo grinned, ignoring the fact she talked back at him in a provocative manner.

Please I'm begging you.. hence you don't want this, I have an idea..a plan.. Ashina said.

Gonzalo looked at her curiously. What plan?

We both could plan for my escape, your mother doesn't have to know..you secretly set me free and also break free from this bondage.. Ashina looked at him, hopeful. Please..

What a nice plan but no! I'm smarter than falling for your little trick. There's no way I'm letting you go off, free.. you are my servant, forever! Don't worry, I'll fix this marriage thing. Imagine, I, Gonzalo Hemming, married to.. Ashina Diego, daughter of a murderous outcast. Gonzalo laughed as he strode out of the storage room.

    ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?***

    ?

The next day, Danciana woke Ashina up with a bucket of cold dirty water, used in showering the pigs.

Because of yesterday's mistake you are feeling like a princess? Get yourself out of this smelly den and attend to my needs!

Ashina sprang to her feets, rubbing her eyes. The smell of the water was awful, she squeezed her face, spitting and trying to use a hand towel to clean her lips.

Greetings your majesty, I am very sorry. I.

Danciana raised a hand, indicating she wasn't interested in her explanations. You are a slave, yesterday was a mistake and we are trying to correct that mistake, so, make sure to stay in your place.

    Yes your majesty. Ashina replied.

    Now, get out!

Ashina ran from the storage room and started off her day, scrubbing and mopping the palace floors. She went to scrub Morgan's bedroom.

How do you feel? Morgan asked.

Ashina shrugged, scrubbing the floors. Does it matter?

Congratulations by the way. Morgan smiled.

Please don't mock me.. Ashina said, hopelessly. Not you at least.

If I were you, I'll make good use of this blessing.. Morgan said. I will take advantage of the situation.

I just want to leave this town and return to my life. I have a perfect life in the big city I come from..I miss my life. Ashina said. She continued her duty then proceeded to mop the palace hall. The Alpha Prince was in the hall, striking a conversation with a guest. Ashina bent to go about her chores, but stopped to look up at the Prince's guest.

The voice was familiar! She glared at the guest, he was an old man. She glared at him closely and carefully, waiting for him to speak. The moment the old man spoke, she identified the voice, it was her uncle!

    CHAPTER 7 RESCUE MISSION

Ashina's eyes flew open. Her uncle was sounding smug, she hated it when he sounded like that.?

Hey you swain! Why are you looking at my business associate in that manner, get lost! Gonzalo commanded.

Ashina reluctantly left the palace hall. She cried in both panic and happiness. Finally, she'd be saved from the webs of the ruthless prince and his mother.

My apologies, Ernest.. Gonzalo apologized. Sometimes these servants can stare at attractive visitors for so long, you are quite attractive. ?

Thank you, Sadie, Ashina's uncle forced a fake smile. For my age? I'm flattered.

Now, back to business, how much are you willing to invest in my farms? I can take you around personally and show you the best of my farm lands. Very fruitful and blessed with good soil.

I don't doubt you at all. Poldark is known for having fruitful farmlands. Sadie replied.

    Proudly.. Gonzalo said.

My prince, this is my first time in Poldark, I don't know anyone here, and I am not a fan of motels..

Gonzalo didn't let him finish. I have a big palace to accommodate my investors for as long as they wish to stay.

Thank you, the rumors about you being a ruthless and proud prince is quite false.. Sadie complimented. You have shown and treated me with nothing but respect and hospitality.

    ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ***

Ashina spent all evening trying to find out which particular guest room did the alpha prince keep her uncle in. She checked almost all the guest rooms without success. Suddenly she remembers there's a guest room downstairs. She races down to the room and push the door wide open. There he was, sitted on the bed. Ashina closed the door behind her.

Uncle Sadie.. Ashina was whispering and crying. She jumps on him, hugging him tightly.

That son of a bitch! Look at you..look at what he turned you to.. Sadie scowled. Next week..

Next week? Ashina didn't let him land. Are you having a feet or cold feet? Get me out of here this minute. Go call the police!

I tried but they wouldn't come.. Sadie broke the sad news to her. I'm sorry.

What? Ashina panicked with zero satisfaction. Something has to be done uncle.!

That is why I'm here..I have come disguised as an investor that wants to invest with the prince on his farm lands, relax, I will smuggle you out!

Ashina nodded. Thank you Uncle..I have to go now. Ashina said.

Yes..I'll figure it out. Sadie responded. But how did you know it was me?

You are my uncle! Even in my sleep I can easily recognize your voice.. Ashina broke into small laughter. She remembered her life before Poldark happened, how happy she used to live with her uncle and cousins.

Before I leave, I want to ask you few questions and please promise to answer me honestly, will you? Ashina asked.

Just ask.. Sadie wasn't sure but agreed. His instincts told him the questions were about her father.

Did my father kill the alpha king? Ashina questioned, breathing heavily. I need to know the truth.

Ashina, some things are better left unsaid.. Sadie began. It's been over a decade, what the truth is does not matter.

It does! Because I am the one stuck here, as a slave. I need you to assure me my father was an honest wolf and the alpha Prince is just making up stories just to keep me here! Ashina spoke, breathing more heavily. It was a tense moment for her. Uncle please answer me! I cannot even remember being here before! Just flashes of one or two scenes of a little girl running around this palace.

Yes..your father murdered the alpha king.. Sadie squeezed his face in a deep frown as he spoke. He was caught and banished along side everyone that was related to him..

Ashina broke down in fresh tears of disappointment. My father?..uncle are you sure of what you are saying, why would he even do that?

Greed.. he tried to kill the two princes too but was caught..I don't know, but greed could only be the reason. Sadie stated.

So then Prince Gonzalo is not lying or making up stories with his mother? Ashina asked.

    He's not.. Sadie replied.

That means father..was wicked and.. Ashina looked at Sadie. And now I am paying for my father's sins?

Ashina, be strong, don't let what happened decades ago to break you. Your father committed a crime, you should not be punished for his sins.

The revelation was too much for Ashina to process, she left the room hurriedly, in tears.

Sadie huffed, looking at the ceiling. He wondered on what will work best in escaping Poldark with Ashina. He knew for a fact, it was going to cost him a fortune!

    ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?***

The sins of the fathers shall be visited on the children.. Gonzalo said aloud with a straight face when Ashina walked into the dinning to serve breakfast.

Her heart and uncle's stopped beating that moment, they both looked at Gonzalo with guilty eyes.

For I will visit the sins of the father even to the fourth generation. Gonzalo looked into Ashina's eyes as he spoke.

The sins of everyone should rest upon them, the soul that sins, shall die. Ashina murmured very quiety to herself. She panicked, was the alpha Prince aware of her conversation with her uncle last night?

If that were the case, she knew by now he would have instructed for her death or torture for attempting to escape.

Sadie bent his face trying to focus on his plate.

The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth have been set on edge.. Gonzalo continued in his parables.

Danciana looked up at Gonzalo in confusion. Zalo..why are you speaking in parables? She looked at Ashina, assuming it had something to do with her. She rolled her eyes, then sighed.

Nothing mother, let's enjoy the breakfast. There was a smile in Gonzalo's voice. Tell me Ernest, when will you be leaving?

Sadie didn't look up. I don't know yet my prince, maybe in a week. Depending on when we finalize and seal the contract.

That doesn't waste time, all you need do is sign a few papers, that's all. Then you come return to your town, except maybe you really love my kingdom and don't see yourself going back. Gonzalo said.

Show me where to sign. Sadie replied. ?

Gonzalo pushed the papers to Sadie, across the table.

Without reading the papers, Sadie signed.

    Perfect! Gonzalo smiled.

    ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ***

Ashina stood by the Queen's door, knocking. She offered silent prayers to the moon goddess.

Danciana looked at Ashina irritatedly. Slave girl, when last did you have a bath?

    This morning.. Ashina answered.

You stink.. Danciana snapped. Oh yeah, I forgot no amount of water can wash off the stench of poverty and misery.

Thank you, your majesty. Ashina said swallowing hard. It was only a matter of few minutes and she'll be far from them.

What do you want? Danciana asked.

I wanted to know if you'd like some fruits, I noticed there were no fruits at the dinning table.. Ashina stated.

Hurry! Go and get me fruits! Fresh ones. Do you copy?

Yes your majesty. Ashina said, took a bow then left.

    ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?***

Quickly, get yourself inside this sack! Sadie spoke in a very tensed voice. This is our only chance.

This is a rice sack.. Ashina said, but rushed to open the sack bag trying to push herself into the sack bag. Sadie helped her get into the sack. He added vegetables and other fruits into the sack, then carried the sack with all his might into his cart.

Satisfied everything was set, Sadie pushed the cart and walked to the palace door. He met Gonzalo halfway.

Ernest.. don't forget to bring my money when you get to your town. Gonzalo said, his face with all smiles.

Of course my prince, you have my signature on the documents. Sadie said, breathing heavily.

Boris can help you with your cart, an aged man like you shouldn't be doing this. Gonzalo said.

It's fine, I can do it. Sadie replied.

My guards help you, at least while you are in my palace. Gonzalo insisted.

Boris pushed Sadie's cart to the palace gate.

Go well, Ernest, my good investor! Gonzalo said, shaking hands with Sadie. It was nice doing business with you. Gonzalo pointed at Sadie's cart. Look at all that food! Your family will definitely be happy!

Sadie fakes laughter. Thank you my prince. The pleasure is all mine. Sadie replied then entered his cart. He pulled the cart aggressively and made way to leave the palace.

    Open the gates! Gonzalo instructed.

Sadie walked with his cart aggressively. He was out of the palace now, he increased his speed. He needed to leave the walls of Poldark before anyone noticed Ashina's absence.

He rode his cart successfully until the front tyre came off in the middle of the boundary between Poldark and another pack.

Damn it! Sadie muttered, coming down from his cart to inspect the tyre.

CHAPTER 8 POLICE IN MY PALACE

Looking for something? Gonzalo said, giving an evil grin while glaring at Sadie.

Sadie snickered, and shot him a guilty glance. No..no it's nothing, just a little problem but I'm on it. What - what are you doing here prince?

I am standing in my land, why? Do we have a problem? Gonzalo asked, enjoying the shock on their faces. He ran his fingers through his hair. It was always perfectly set, either professionally blown - dried or pulled into a conservative updo and his expensive regalia complemented the appearance he sought to present.

Sweat soaked, Sadie looks away. No..I was..

Guards! Gonzalo yelled and guards appeared shortly, pulling out their swords towards Sadie.

Arrest him! Gonzalo commanded and in no time, the guards chained Sadie.

Open every sack in his cart! Gonzalo issued another command.

Boris discovered Ashina in one of the sacks and pulled her out.

Gonzalo laughed historically, shaking his head and clapping.

Well - done job, Sadie - oh no, Ernest! Gonzalo said mockingly. Ernest my good investor..

My prince please spare her life! Let her go, take my head instead! Please I beg of you. Sadie begged.

Let him go! Ashina said. Please, I have accepted to pay for the sins of my father, Sadie is my uncle, he has no business here.

Gonzalo straightened. All the heads of your entire generation put together cannot pay for the death of my father, whom was a great king.

    Please.. Ashina pleaded.

You attempted to escape? I don't have proper education, but my brains are working just fine. I am no fool, nothing happens in Poldark without me being aware of. Gonzalo stated. Guards! Take them away! Chain them to my car and drive slowly, back to the palace.

Boris and the other guards chain Ashina and Sadie onto back of Gonzalo's car. Gonzalo enter his car, driving off with his driver. The driver was most assuredly efficient behind the wheel of the car. Ashina and Sadie's skin peel as the car is moving slowly.

I am sorry I am putting you through this.. Tears rained on Ashina's cheeks as she spoke to her uncle.

Sorry I failed you.. Sadie said.

I am the one to apologize.. I shouldn't have involved you.. Ashina buried her mind in regrets. Chuchin and Morgan had warned her, yet she was so adamant on getting him involved. She never wanted him hurt deliberately, all she did was fight for was her freedom.

Now her cousins and aunty's life was at stake too.

    ***

Danciana rose to her feet in shock when she saw Gonzalo's car enter the palace with Ashina and Sadie dangling at the back.

Morgan immediately shut her eyes in disgust and sympathy. Shit! Holy crab! She did it!

Did you say something? Danciana asked Morgan.

No mother. Morgan replied, opening her eyes.

The slave tried to escape! Gonzalo said, glancing at his mother when he
