CHAPTER ONE

PETRA

PETRA CREPT DOWN THE hall of the cottage and opened the door at the end where Grandmother lay in her bed. She'd never been well that Petra could remember, but her condition was getting worse rapidly now. Her once thick golden hair, the same shade as Petra’s, had grayed and turned wispy. They also shared the same color green eyes, but Grandmother’s were cloudy, and more lines had appeared on her face in what seemed like overnight.

Grandmother was fading away faster, despite all of Petra's efforts. She held her breath until Grandmother's chest rose and fell.

With a relieved exhale of her own, Petra closed the door and tiptoed back down the hall. Their home was cozy, but mostly empty now. Petra had sold everything she could to pay for elixirs.

Grandmother's medicines were expensive, but if everything went according to plan tonight, Petra could afford to hire the best healer in the Enchanted City to cure Grandmother completely.

The thought of her well again made Petra’s steps light as she locked the door and ventured into the forest. The full moon was on the rise, letting plenty of light through the treetops. This part of the forest wasn't dangerous for her, but could be unpredictable. She should know — she was one of the things that took others by surprise.

Petra made her way through the trees on the faint trail she had worn between her cottage and the nearest neighbor.

Dowager Dove lived in a manor called The Loafer, and Petra hadn't been able to think of a better place than her friend's house to hide the women she and Will Scarlet had taken from a gang of abductors last night. The Loafer had many spare rooms, and a bakery where the Dowager Dove sold bread and cakes.

It wasn't the first time Petra had come across women being brought through the Outer Forest, on their way to the worse parts — the Dark Forest where night ruled, and the Foreboding Forest where winter held sway. In the past, there had only been one kidnapped woman at a time, and they’d been local. It looked like the kidnappers were increasing their efforts.

It was the first time Will Scarlet had been smitten by a woman who'd shown absolutely no interest in him.

Petra wouldn’t wish being kidnapped on anyone, but seeing Will flummoxed had made her week.

The hoot of an owl greeted Petra as she approached The Loafer, and she called back, raising her gaze to catch sight of Will’s shadowy form lounging in a tree.

Will wasn't deterred from a challenge, so it wasn't surprising he'd be lurking. He could say he was standing guard all he wanted, but he'd never convince her he wasn't waiting for an opportune moment to try his charm again.

A few stray dogs yipped and barked, running in circles around Petra’s feet as she entered the meadow. She laughed and knelt to pat their heads. What good guardians you are. You're keeping everyone safe, aren't you?

All manner of strays were drawn to Dowager Dove's house — probably drawn to the delicious smells that always wafted from The Loafer. That was what attracted Petra the first time.

The Dowager Dove also had cats, injured birds, and even a snake that lived under the porch. The bakery took up the front of the first floor of the manor and was often busy with guests coming for treats and wanting to socialize.

The rest of the house served as a sort of inn. Two stories formed a square with an open courtyard in the center. Petra went around to the back.

Her friend answered the knock with a warm smile.

Hello, Petra. Come in.

Petra performed a curtsy and bowed her head. Dowager Dove.

The older woman's warm brown eyes twinkled through the round glasses perched on her nose. Flour streaked one rosy cheek and dusted her gray hair. She placed her hands on ample hips draped in a grey dress and white apron.

How many times have I told you that Dowager nonsense is only for the bakery?

Every time. Petra straightened. How are they?

They're still a bit jumpy after their ordeals, but warming up. They've been helping me in the kitchen.

That explained the flour in Dove's normally perfectly coiffed bun.

Petra pushed a few coins into the woman's hands to help with expenses. "I can only stay a few minutes. I have to get to
