"S pencer, wake up … Now. "
I groaned, pulling the covers further over my head in order to try and muffle the shrill sound of my mom’s voice from the hallway. After all, it was the first day of summer vacation and I was determined to take things easy. But of course my mother didn’t know the meaning of the word ‘relaxation’ and a moment later my bedroom door slammed open with a deafening bang.
Spencer, I said WAKE UP.
Mom,
I groaned, still hiding beneath the sheets, you know you can’t just barge into my room like that anymore. I’m eighteen …
And an eighteen year old man shouldn’t be sleeping in when he has to start work in less than an hour,
she shot back.
Wait ... what?
I thought that might’ve caught your attention,
she smirked as I finally pulled the covers away.
Who said I was starting work?
I asked.
I did,
she replied, her mean smirk growing bigger. Because if you think for one second that I’m gonna let you spend all summer up here playing video games then you’re very much mistaken. Don’t look so worried, he seemed really charming and anyway, I thought a little hard work would be exactly what you needed. Not to mention a way of adding to your college fund.
I stared at my mom, totally at a loss for words.
This was typical of her: barging in and meddling in my business. But at the same time, I knew there was no way out of the weird situation I suddenly found myself in. No matter how much I whined and complained, begged and pleaded, my mom was the kind of lady who simply wouldn’t take no for an answer.
I guess that’s settled then,
I sighed.
Don’t be so gloomy, honey,
she grinned. You never know. You might even enjoy yourself.
She took another glance at her wristwatch then clapped her hands together. Up you get. I told him you’d be there at nine!
I groaned, knowing my fate was sealed. It looked like my last summer vacation before college was going to well and truly suck ...
After a quick shower and a hurried breakfast, I set out on my bike in the direction of my new job. From the address my mom had given me it seemed as if this guy had moved into one of the really huge, expensive houses right at the top of
