Introduction
Founded in 1966, TESOL International Association (www.tesol.org) is a professional community of educators, researchers, administrators, and students whose mission is to advance professional expertise in English language teaching and learning for speakers of other languages worldwide. TESOL International Association has a long history of standards development for the field of English language teaching, starting with the first national standards for ESL in the United States published in 1997. This document, developed by TESOL International Association, provides standards and guidelines for short-term TEFL/TESL certificate programs. The document includes (1) the scope and purpose of the Standards for Short-Term TEFL/TESL Certificate Programs, (2) a research-based rationale for the components of the standards, (3) the standards and performance indicators, (4) a program assessment tool, and (5) a glossary and reference list. Terms in the glossary are bolded the first time they are used in the document.
Given the diversity of global contexts in which English language teaching takes place, many people starting in the field of teaching English as a second, foreign, or additional language pursue an entry-level credential
