The Boy Who Got A Cat
Maasai Land
The sun had begun setting on the quiet Maasai village in Kajiado County of Kenya. It was time to go home. Leshan stood up from the spot where he had been playing with other children.
Soon, it will be dark.
He thought.
The tall, slim boy started walking towards the goats while whistling, to get their attention. Some of the other boys followed him. They threw stones at the stubborn animals that seemed to ignore their calls.
Although he was only five years old, Leshan knew the timing of darkness and daylight. Every morning, he, and other boys who were too young for school, took the small goats and calves to the grazing fields. They spent the days playing and searching for fruits while making sure the animals did not go too far.
Occasionally, a small, wild animal would sneak around and try to take a goat’s kid. However, the boys would spot the intruders on time. Then, they would make some loud noises to scare off the jackals, wild dogs, foxes, or any other intruders.
The big meat eaters never came this close to the village. In fact, Leshan had only seen them across Lake Amboseli. There were lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and others. However, they always stayed far from the village and the grazing fields.
Finally, all the young animals stopped grazing and started trotting in the direction of the village. Although the children had not been to school, a
