Chapter 1

Marianna

I woke up when the rays of sunlight hit my face. I squinted my eyes and groaned in frustration. I want to sleep some more, I wasn’t able to sleep early last night because I finished knitting my coat. But I need to get up now, or else I won’t be able to eat proper food.

Marianna. Are you awake?

I opened my eyes when I heard a voice and a soft knock on my door.

Yes, Linda. I am awake, I answered and got up from my bed.

Linda opened the door and she was holding a pail of hot water. Her eyes crinkled when she smiled at me.

You should've asked me to get it. Your back is still in pain, isn’t it? I said and helped her carrying the pail of water.

She glared at me and gave me a playful slap on the shoulder.

Don’t treat me like an old lady. She scoffed and I laughed.

‘But you are an old lady.’ I wanted to tell her that, but I decided not to. She will be mad at me.

Linda is my mother’s, the previous countess of Silverstein, handmaiden. She became the head maid, and the only person who helps me in this manner.

When my parents, the count and countess of Silverstein died in a carriage accident, I was only 12. Since I was a minor, the closest relative had to take the title and serve as my guardian. My father’s brother, Uncle Lino, took over his position and title.

At first, he was only helping out in sorting the affairs and managing the manor. But as the years passed by, they slowly took over our mansion and now they are the Lords of this place.
