    CHAPTER 1

    THE YEAR 1256

Jakob Holden, a Highlander is a tall man even when he is standing next to his horse ‘Wyldemere.’  The horse is a huge brown stallion with black stockings only on the front hooves.  They are both built like strong warriors, but Jakob's muscles came from doing hard labor for villagers or farmers needing a hired hand.

Jakob has straight dark hair going to his broad shoulders, but he always seems to have a curl hanging down over his forehead.  His eyes are as green as the color of the forest, a handsome man with a strong square jawline.  His skin is lightly bronzed but didn’t seem to age him from working outside and in the light of the sun.

Jakob never takes shelter and prefers to sleep under the stars at night and always faces the direction of the next sunrise.  The warmth of the morning sun is enough to start his day with a smile on his face, flattering his tiny dimples.  He also prefers living alone but manages to find a woman when he desires pleasuring for the night.  He knows he will need to settle down one day when he’s old, gray, and wants to have a steady companion.

WHILE I AM TRAVELING to the next village seeking work, I see a woman I vow is going to be my bride.  The fair young lady up ahead who I am about to meet isn’t yet aware of it.  I am shocked at my sudden change of mind from wanting to be an old codger without a wife.  From on top of my horse, I can see she is a beautiful woman even from afar.  The minute from when I’m going to meet ‘Maggie,’ I know she will be the one for me.  I see her right outside a pub sitting on top of a hay bale sobbing, so I stop a short distance from there as not to frighten her.  I climb off my horse and tie him to the rail and start walking over to console her.

The woman is small framed and has long wavy hair the color of pure gold.  Her features look soft on her as the white feathers of a dove, and I so want to feel the smoothness of her face and wipe away her tears.  Her hands are together on her lap, and she has her long legs crossed at her ankles.  At first, she is not aware I am near, and I may have even startled her a bit.  When she looks up at me coming towards her, I can see she has the bluest eyes I have ever seen.  They seem to be bluer than of the sky itself.  I smile at her, and it seems to reassure her that I mean her no harm.  I still have money left from the last job, enough to buy some land to settle down if need be.  I walk over and stand in front of the woman and take a deep breath before wanting to speak to her.

Good day milady and are you hurt?  I ask with bated breath.

What?  She whimpers.  As she turns her head away, she wipes away the tears with the back of her hand as for me not to see.

I repeat milady, are you hurt?  I saw you crying from afar and was concerned for your well-being.

Nay, she stutters as she gazes into my eyes, and the corners of her mouth form a smile.

Then may I ask, why you are crying?  I’m worried about her.

She still has the sniffles but manages to speak.  I just lost my job and my last wages when an ugly, daft, drunk idiot bumped into me.  I watch her take a short breath and then continue.  He made me spill a tray of beers and all the stein mugs shattered on the floor.  The pub keeper didn’t want to hear my reasoning for the accident because the drunk was his brother.  He also said my wages would pay for new mugs and to leave, so now I have nothing!  She inhales a deep breath and tells me she wanted to have money of her own and was limited to jobs in this village.

Still standing and feeling sad for her I say, I am so sorry about your story.  May I rest a bit here beside you on your hay bale?

Of course, but it’s not my hay bale, she sighs with a smile.

The woman moves over, and I sit down beside her.  I say, Well, first of all, I would like to make my acquaintance with you.  My name is Jakob Holden, and I will be beholden to you if you will be so kind as to return with your name.  I hold out my hand for her to put hers into which she does ever so lightly.  I can feel tingling sensations from her to me the minute we touch.  I lift her hand to my lips and kiss the back of it softly, then return it to her.

Ha, Holden and beholden, ha!  That is the silliest flirtatious line I ever heard from a man!  She exclaims and lowers her eyes as she feels a bit embarrassed.

Aye, while remembering how I said the words, I grin.  I see what you mean my dear lady, but I assure you I never used that line before now, so?  Still waiting for her answer, I reach over with my finger and tilt her chin up toward me.

So, what? she asks stunned as not hearing a question.

May I please have your name milady? I ask again with my dazzling smile which shows off my dimples.

She replies with another smile, Sir, my name is Magenta Harrison and how do you do?

Well Magenta Harrison, I do just fine, and I’m sure you will soon.  I hesitate for a minute.  I do not believe in love at first sight, but you are a beauty, and I do believe in promises.  If you let me be a friend to you and are not already spoken for by another man, I will promise you a beautiful home life for your future.

She nods but is quiet for a minute as I glance to see her cheeks start to redden.  I stand and excuse myself from her, and walk over to my horse to recheck my money roll.

I return saying, I have enough money for me to now purchase some nearby land.  I saw a small area on this side of the village on a small knoll about a mile from here.  I stopped earlier to ask a farmer for the distance to the next village to get some work.  He mentioned he owned the land and if I decided to buy it and stay here, I could do some work for him for extra money.  We also agreed he and I could do some trade work for each other.  I do believe I will now stop traveling and stay here near this little village.

Magenta tells me the village name is ‘Middleport’ and thinks it’s nice of me to stay and agrees with my ideas.  After all, she has nothing to lose, and she doesn’t commit to anything but being my friend.  We both decide to meet every day in this same area and time of day to chat so I can update her on our future.  After our short visiting time together, I decided to head back to talk to the farmer about the land.

~~MAGENTA WAITS UNTIL the man is on his horse and heads away before standing.  Her legs are still a little shaky from the excited feelings which she got simply from being near him.  Since working in the pub, Magenta never saw such a handsome man and one who was so polite as well.  After a moment she starts running to her brother’s home where she continues to live with his family since they are the only relatives she has left.  Their folks died three years earlier in a fire in the home she shared with them.

Her brother Henry is married for seven years now to Sarah, and they had three small children, two boys, and one girl.  Sadly they lost their two little boys last year when they drown while playing in a nearby river.  Their girl Allison now four years old is their only little bundle of joy left.

Magenta wants to tell Henry and Sarah not to be angry about losing her job which was not even her fault.  She also has good news to go with the bad news.

As Magenta bursts through the door, she yells, Henry, Sarah, I have some news to share with you!

Me too? exclaims Allison as she bounces around the corner from the other room.

Of course, Allie, she says with a smile, I would never leave you out of anything so exciting.

Well, now what is this news that is of the utmost importance?  Sarah asks wiping her hands on a towel as she enters the room where Magenta is standing.  As she waits for an answer, she leans over to pick up Allison to stop her from jumping up and down with excitement.

Magenta waits for Henry to appear too and says, I believe I have now met my Prince Charming!  He is tall, polite, and oh so handsome of a man!  Green... she pauses for a minute to reflect on his amazing color and sighs.  He has the deepest of green eyes you could ever dream of.  She smiles and continues to say, We are going to meet every day outside the pub to talk about...

Henry stops Magenta right there from talking and questions her.  Wait a minute, will the pub keeper allow you to step outside to chat with the fellow each day during your shift?

Magenta lowered her eyes for a minute as they were going to bring back the tears she had earlier.  She blinked them away and thought about the future of what Jakob said to her.  She replies, I lost that daft job, but I will be looking up at a better life soon.

Magenta tries to explain what happened at the pub to Henry and Sarah both so they won’t be so distraught about her visits with her new friend.  She doesn’t want to get her hopes up and is going to take one day at a time to see what each day brings to her.  No more talk was about her day or Jakob.  After their evening supper, Allison wanted to know all about ‘Aunt Maggie’s Prince’ and will she become a princess if they get married.

Allie, right now he is a friend only, and you need to get to bed.  When Magenta moved into this home with her brother’s family, she shared a bedroom with Allison, so she followed to tuck her under the covers for the night.  Last year, the room which the boys previously shared is now a seamstress room for both Sarah and Magenta to work together.

Goodnight Princess Aunt Maggie, Allie says with a giggle as she crawls into bed and pulls up the covers.

Goodnight Princess Allie, Magenta says with a smile, and then kisses her on the forehead and leaves the room.  She goes to bed shortly afterward but lays awake thinking of what tomorrow will bring.  She imagines kissing Jakob one day and hopes to fall asleep dreaming about him with those deep green eyes of his.  She eventually nodded off into a deep slumber until the morning light.~~

THE LAND IS BEAUTIFUL but needs some work to make it a home for Magenta and me.  During the following week, I spent little of my money to buy the beautiful countryside where I passed by when I first came to Middleport.  I also started some ground clearance near the woods.  It once belonged to my neighbor William Latham who lives a half-mile from me and seems to give me respect for deciding to stay.  I stopped earlier to water my horse at the brook near the edge of the man’s garden.  That was when I was seeking work at the next village, and on the same day, I met the beautiful Magenta.

I meet Magenta each day at about the same time as we first met as we both agreed.  We sit in the same area near the hay bales which feed the horses at the pub.  She tells me about how she became to be where she is today.  She lost both her parents and was having to move in with her brother’s family.  We both want to get to know each other at a slow pace since it will take some time for my plans to come to order.  Tomorrow I will tell her more about my travels and how I arrived here too.

I borrowed William’s wagon to get some building supplies from the village to my land and started working on the house right away.  I know Magenta will want a separate room for the bed as for privacy, so I have to accommodate it by needing an extra door.  I purchased some carpentry tools from a peddler as he passed by going to the village and a few extra which William owned.  My supplies are only limited to last me through the first week.  I remembered he talked about me working for pay or trade labor at his farm.  I will stop by his farm tomorrow asking for pay work as I need to buy more boards.  I have hopes this house will be what Magenta dreams about as her very own to share with me when the time is right for her to join me in marriage.

Tomorrow is here, and I have waited for a few too many days already, but I can’t wait any longer to kiss Magenta.  She must be eagerly as excited to visit with me as I am to be near her and inhale her flowery scent once again.  She is already sitting on the bales with a smile as I ride up to the pub.  I climb off my horse, tie him to the rail, pat his neck, and scratch behind his ears.  I have to pause a minute trying to calm my excitement not to run over to grab her and hold her in my arms.

As soon as I sit down, I lean in and look her right into those beautiful blue eyes of hers then glance at her soft lips.  I tilt her chin up and ask, May I?  I know she wants to feel my kiss too for I can see the anxiousness in her eyes.

She swallows a gulp, nods, and says, I’ve been wondering what was taking you so long to ask me.

At first, I slowly meet my lips to Magentas, and they are as soft as I imagined.  I longed for a deep kiss, and as she parts her lips, my tongue delves into her mouth.  I can taste her sweet juices as I run my tongue over her teeth.  The kiss seems to last forever.  Before becoming delirious, I pull away as she has to take a deep breath herself.  I sit here intoxicated by her beauty, and the fresh smell of her hair as a slight breeze passes by me.

Time lingers on as I hold her hands.  Magenta, I could spend the rest of the night here beside you, but I realize you need to hurry home for your evening meal.  I take one more kiss for granted, but she is more than willing to give me one too as her arms move to surround my neck.  We both stand, and I hold her tight as I inhale her sweet, flowery scent once again.  I don’t want to let her go so we kiss one last time.  I bid her goodnight as she turns to leave.  Since there is still some daylight left for me to do more work on the land, I head out in the opposite direction.

The following day, I tell Magenta about the progress made on the house and property which is moving along quickly.  I received help from not only my neighbor William but from a local boy named Thomas.  He is a young lad who stopped me as I headed out to home one night and was willing to do a hard day’s work with no complaints.  Thomas agreed to take little pay and food if he could stay under some shelter since he was homeless himself.  He saw Magenta and I sitting together each day and heard from the villagers I would be living nearby and might need a helping work hand.  Thomas is a great lad to have around for friendship, labor, and a great hunter.  He would set up a few traps in the morning, and we would both have a delicious evening meal.  We ate squirrel, raccoon, rabbit, pheasant, or even a fish or two from my creek which is behind the house and through the nearby trees.

Another week passed with the help of William and Thomas.  I constructed a small two-room thatch roof house and leveled the ground nearby to start a garden.  I returned William’s wagon, and after working for him for pay, I had enough money to pay Thomas.  I also purchased a bed, table, two chairs, and some hand-made linen from the second neighbor over, who makes them for a living.  I also made some shelving for goods in the kitchen area and a mantle over the fireplace.  I will have to wait a while longer before I have enough lumber to build a proper stable for my horse.  For now, Wyldemere will have a lean-to temporarily until winter comes along.

After all this time together, I trusted Thomas enough to give him extra money to purchase a few necessary supplies of food in the village market.  Since he has no horse of his own, he had to make two trips.  I thought it would be helpful to have a few pots and dishes to make homesteading a little more enjoyable for Magenta when she arrives.  Because of her parents’ house fire and living with her brother, I assume she has little or no dowry of her own to bring into the marriage.

The land for the garden was now level, and the house was also ready to move into.  Thomas decided to return to Middleport even though I asked him to stay on as an errand boy.  He was an excellent worker, and if people ask about his skills, I will put in the right word for him.  Thomas reminded me a lot of myself when I was younger, so I understand his preferences of being alone as well.  He seems to be growing up faster than he should be but that’s how he wants it to be with him.

Now that the home is ready to move into, I am prepared to meet Magenta’s brother.  I want to ask him for Magenta’s hand in marriage since she is still living at their home.  Henry and Sarah Harrison are quiet people but their little one, Allison is a cutie and a little giggle-butt.  Magenta asked Henry for permission to invite me to join them for supper which was approved as I am still nervous to meet her family.  I am kindly welcomed into their home and was pleased with the food which both women cooked.  When the meal finished, and the dishes were picked up, the ladies went back to the kitchen to get and cut the pie.  In this moment I nervously ask to speak to Henry alone in private.

I take a deep and shaky breath and say, I know we have only just met tonight and Magenta has already told you stories about me too.  I want you to know I had my eyes on your sister for a month and three days now.  I assure you I can provide for her and a family when the time comes.  I stop for a second to take in another breath.  I have built a small home with all the comforts which I think a woman could want and need.  It is on a small knoll near a creek and a mile from town.  You are welcome any time to come and see it all if you believe me not.

What are you trying to say to me, Jakob?  Henry asks when he already seems to know the question of marriage is right around the corner.  Magenta was giddy lately waiting for this day to come.  Henry previously heard about her losing her job and meeting me daily.  He looks more shocked at the shortness of our time together.  I’m sure he’s waiting for me to ask permission and to sweat a little more before I’ll get an answer to my question.

I’m starting to tremble and stand my ground but am out of breath by the time I finish asking for Magenta’s hand in marriage.  I am almost afraid of not knowing if I am going to get punched in the gut, face, or simply booted out of their house.  I wait for Henry to ponder the moment and I’m still a little hungry because I didn’t even get any of Sarah’s pie after supper.

Henry, almost as red-faced as I feel, isn’t quite ready for me to ask for a hand in marriage to his sister.  He wonders why I have even wanted to take her away from his home for even a mile away.  They have always been such a close family, and he knows Allie will miss her more.  With such anger from Henry comes a roar, How dare you to ask such a question!  Are you crazy lad?  Do you even know what you are asking me?

By then, Henry can’t keep the smile off his face any longer.  He grins and quietly exclaims, Aye, you may have her hand!

Henry then gives a mammoth hug to me while reaching around my body with his arms and lifting me off the ground.  He also pats me on the back so hard I start choking but I am much relieved.  Henry’s reaction takes me entirely off guard, and I am very thankful for the approval.  Now I have to get the same approval from Magenta as I smile at the thought.

Sarah and Magenta never heard Henry raise his voice so loud before.  Both of them stop what they are doing to chase after a toddler.  Allison comes running into the parlor wondering what is going on.  The ladies aren’t sure if a scuffle is happening and if Allison will be in the middle of trampling when she enters the room.

We two men are apart as Allison runs to me and grabs with both her arms around my leg and says, Please don’t hurt him, Papa.  He’s a handsome fella, and I may want to marry him someday.

Don’t you worry little darling I didn’t hurt him.  Henry pauses to get a reaction from me as I nod ‘nay.’  I am still trying to get my breath and my steady breathing back to normal again.

I take Allison’s hands and bend down to speak to her quietly.  I’m sorry if you are going to be upset, but I cannot marry you.  I am here to ask your Aunt Magenta to be my bride.

Allison wrinkles up her face and looks up at her Aunt, then back to me.  In a much higher whisper than expected, she screeches, You want to marry my Aunt Maggie, but she’s so old!

In this moment, Sarah tells us there is pie in the kitchen as she and Henry start snickering as they walk away leaving us three others where we are.

Fine, I’m never getting married, and I want a big piece of pie!  Allison shouts as she storms into the kitchen stomping her feet.

Henry explains to Allie she will be best to wait to marry until she is older and much taller.  Henry knows Allie will understand the simple explanation.  She is happy now and gets her piece of the pie.

I stand and walk over to Magenta and take her hands in mine.  I get down on my knees again and look up into those blue eyes of hers and say.  Magenta, you are the love of my life, the promise of light in my darkness, and I want you to be my wife.  Will you please give me the honor and marry me?

Aye, is the soft sound coming from her lips as tears of joy start to form in her eyes.

I am close enough to barely hear what she says, but see the gleam in those beautiful blue eyes of hers.  I know the answer is enough to be acceptable because she falls to her knees and lightly kisses me.  She leans forward enough to catch me off balance, and we both crash noisily to the floor.

Allie hears the thud and comes trotting back into the room and says, Up, up off the floor or you get no pie!  Oh, and Aunt Maggie, will you still be my Aunt if you marry him? she asks as she turns around before going back to the kitchen.

Aye, little lady, and then Jakob will be your Uncle Jakob.

After I stand up, I reach down and take Magenta’s hands to help her up.  We walk together quickly into the kitchen before Allie threatens to eat our piece of the pie.  A few minutes after eating the pie, I decided to head on home before it gets too dark to ride.  Allie gives me another leg hug and has agreed marriage is not for her at this time.  The whole family walks us to the door bidding me goodnight, and I give another quick kiss to Magenta as they all look on.  I will still be patient on when we will marry and for her to pick the special date.  On my way home, I thought about our wedding day and the nights to follow and hope it would be soon.  I am ready to start a new life near Middleport, near Magenta’s family, and of course with Magenta as my wife.

MAGGIE AND I MARRIED by the end of the week and can’t be any happier to start enjoying our new life together.  Our wedding was short and in the church on the other side of the village.  Father Phineas, Henry, Sarah, Allie along with William; his wife Edwina, and Thomas all witnessed the beautiful ceremony.  Henry gave Maggie away while Sarah held Allie’s hand at her seat as not to run to us as we said our vows.  After the wedding, hugs, and kisses, I was anxious to take my bride home as she was as well.

Earlier in the day while Maggie was watching Allie play in the yard, Sarah made a cake and wanted everyone to come back to their house for some.  After the cake was eaten and William, Edwina, and Thomas left, it was time for me to take Maggie to our new home.  As we are halfway out the door, Allie runs to me again for another leg hug.  She says, Bring her back soon please.  We all smile at her comment as she runs back to her mama’s side.

Since Maggie had not a horse of her own, I help her onto Wyldemere and climb up behind her.  I promise to buy her one more her size when getting paid for the recent job I am still working on for William.  I feel excitement run through my groin as my erection starts to grow when Maggie presses her rump back up against me.  I am anxiously ready for the wedding night to begin with Maggie as my wife.

As Maggie and I reach our land, she is starting to get teary-eyed by the beauty of what I built for us.  She didn’t want to come to the countryside earlier while I was working on it.  She wanted to wait and see the land with the house on it after it was all complete.

Oh Jakob, this area is beautiful, and look at what you have done already!  Maggie says with amazement.

When we arrive at our door, I climb down first and tie my horse to the rail under the lean-to.  I will come outside later to remove the bridle, saddle, and blanket then brush down my horse.  After reaching up to lift my bride into my arms, I hold her tight to my chest and give her a long welcoming kiss.  I don’t let her down to the ground but carry her to the doorway and across the threshold.  When we are inside, I close the door and set her on the earthen floor.  I take her face in my hands and look into her pretty blue eyes, kiss her again and tell her, Welcome Home Wife!

Maggie is in awe as she looks around the room at the four walls and sees to her left the kitchen area.  It has a table, two chairs, dishes on shelves, food supply in the corner, a work area, a fireplace with a stack of wood, and a pot nearby.  Beyond the kitchen in the rear are two low shelves and a hip tub with a blanket for a drawn curtain.  To the right area is a rocking chair, a rack, and an extra workspace.  The floor is still the natural earth, but there are a few rugs laid around.  To the back and right side is a separate room with the door ajar.  Maggie walks into the room which holds two night-stands and our bed which is covered with a very colorful bedspread.  As she is looking at the blanket, she hears me tell her, I put in a special request to the neighbor who made it for me as a wedding gift to her.  I wanted all the colors of a beautiful rainbow pattern on it, and as she touches it, she starts to get teary-eyed again.

Maggie turns around to see me smiling and leaning on the door frame with my arms across my chest.  She has a huge smile which reassures me of her approval and it alone is enough to give me a throbbing sensation in my breeches.  I ask, Did I come through for you so far on my promise?

She whispers, ‘aye’ and walks over to me putting her arms up around my neck and kisses me.

I pull her in tighter to give her another deep, lasting kiss.  When she opens her mouth to speak again, I plunge my tongue inward.  I move it around her mouth and across her teeth as I run my long muscular fingers through her golden locks of hair.  I’m aware she is nervous about having sex for the first time while I’m trying to hold back my excitement for wanting to be inside her.  It’s not the issue of not being with a woman for a while, but now I desire Maggie and only her.

I take her hands in mine and place them on my chest.  Maggie, I want to feel your hands touch me by starting with unbuttoning my shirt to take it off.  I wait for her to begin before I reach to untie the strings on her bodice.

Maggie is a little nervous, but at the same time, she is excited as she is pulling my shirt out of my breeches.  She fumbles at removing my remaining clothing while I almost tear at hers but have to remind myself to go slow for her.  After all of our garments are now on the floor, I reach over to pull back the bedspread to uncover the colorful sheets hidden underneath.  I slowly lift Maggie into my arms and set her gently on the bed.  She believes in me and my promise to try to be gentle with her.  She is also aware of what the wedding night consists of by not only pleasing a husband but herself as well.  She is nervous, scared, and excited all at once.

I lie beside Maggie and gaze at the fullness of her breasts and take one in my left hand.  She lets out a small gasp but also arches up for me to suck on the other one.  She says she feels a throbbing heat starting to grow between her legs, and as her heart beats a little faster, she distracts me.  Jakob, will you kiss me right now?

I lean into Maggie and kiss her on her soft lips and say I’ll go slowly
