    CHAPTER ONE

    TRYOUT TERROR

    Quincy Green took a deep breath and opened the car door. Today was the day he’d been working toward all summer: the all-city soccer tryouts. He couldn’t believe it was finally here.

    You’ll do great, Quincy, his mom said from the driver’s side. Just get out there and give it everything you’ve got.

    That’s what I’m worried about, Ma. That my best won’t be enough, he said.

    Quincy grabbed his water bottle and jogged toward the field. There were tons of kids running, kicking balls, and talking with each other. The soccer tryouts were a big deal for players across the city.

    Quincy got about halfway to the field when a ball whizzed past his head. He jerked to a stop and looked around. He saw someone doubled over in laughter.

    That was a close one, a voice said. I almost got you!
