About this ebook

Angels are known to be benevolent and pure. They grace the corners of the earth without leaving a trace of their presence. Humans are complex creatures who experience an array of feelings and emotions, including happiness, sadness, envy, and fear. Yet are angels not also, in a way, human?

Through a long journey, an angel must decide if what she hears is the truth or merely what everyone wishes to believe. She must decide if everyone turns a blind eye and denies what is in front of them or if she is the one deluded by a facade.

The mind is capable of creating countless delusions and fallacies. Human nature has its own emotional tendencies that affect our perspective. Happiness makes the world shine a little brighter. Anxiety can overwhelm us with fear. Jealousy has a way of justifying wrong actions. Anger can tear down empires. Love can create almost anything. But humans always follow what others believe, don't they? Which truth will she find to be the real truth? The belief set forth by nearly all she meets or what she comes to discover when she takes off the blindfold?

We are not human for we are blessed with the power to protect and heal.

We have wings upon our backs and gentle hands to comfort those nearby.

Yet we are delicate and fragile, not always able to feel the love around us.

We fail to see the beauty in the setting sun or the eyes of our loved ones when they smile.

But why is our innocent love taken away so quickly? Easily replaced by fear and jealousy?

Why give love if you can take it away?

A rather evil notion, yet humans do it all the time.

They feel the wrath of hate and envy but also the yearning and fleetingness of love.

But perhaps we are not so different at all.

Perhaps, the problem is not that we are not human, but rather that we are.

    Prologue

I am a young girl stricken with naivety. I fall for simple tricks meant to deceive people and always believe in the greater good. That is where I get into trouble. However, this is not about me lacking those skills at all. I was a child that was granted the wish to fly. I was a simple child granted the wish to wear beautiful silky wings upon her back, to fly like a bird and to be enchanted as all the other creatures who grace this beautiful world. This is where the story I wished to tell you began. I was assigned a task where I, Cara, had feared for the worst but came to realize that this task may have been the second greatest thing to ever happen to me.

    I met the devil.

    Chapter 1

He is not what I thought he was. There were pictures depicting him as a grotesque evil being, but I never saw the sort that was spoken of. No, I saw a delicate, vulnerable creature before me who had lost sight of the world. I honestly do not know how he managed to survive the world, given the state he was in. To be forsaken, the view of the wonders of the world is so tragic. I do not believe that I would be as strong as he once was when his sight was given again.

One day, my Lord kindly asked me to go and check up on this devil, who was one of his many sons. Although he was looked down upon, the love that Kyro, our king, had for him was still seen. Kyro did not wish for the devil to be alone for too long or to be unhealthy or unhappy, although the latter was often difficult to avoid. Every few days or so, someone would be sent to see how the devil was doing. Rarely was anyone sent for more than once. This solitary state served as punishment and rehabilitation for his past wrongdoings. On that Monday, it was my turn. I was quite scared. The stories I had heard all led me to believe that he was an evil force not to be reckoned with. I feared going into his dungeon.

Yet wonders behold, and it did not look anything like a dungeon. This place was far into the countryside, surrounded by meadows with blossoming wildflowers. There were animals roaming freely in their pastures with gentle looks on their faces. The sun was shining brightly in the velvety sky. Everything looked so peaceful and beautiful. Then I stepped inside the door and took in the view of the palace. Gray marble columns, paintings of angels flying on the ceilings, and countless masterpieces adorned the walls. Was this really a dungeon? I entered the master bedroom, where I was told the devil would be, and chills ran up my spine upon seeing him. He was lying on his bed, Sleeping, I thought. At the sound of the door, he jolted upright, and time froze for a second. We stood staring at each other like we were in a trance. We had never seen each other nor heard each other’s names or voices, yet we were frozen in our places like statues in a garden. A small white butterfly flew in front of me and startled me. He could see the fear in my trembling eyes because I was hardly moving at all. He got up and came toward me. He was not at all what I was led to believe. The horns on his head and the evil in his eyes; it was all a lie! He seemed tormented by something intangible, but he was not the ugly creature he was made out to be.

He headed toward me with a grace in his step that I cannot describe. His movements were elegant, and his face was full of indescribable beauty. They say angels are the purest of creatures, the most beautiful, but for once, I felt that there was no competition with this being. I had never seen a more majestic creature than this. Once he was in front of me, he paused. He lifted his hand and gently placed it hesitantly on my cheek. I winced a little but soon felt calm and secure. I could feel that he had no intentions of hurting me. His hand was warm to the touch, and after feeling as if he were staring straight into my soul, he put his hand down and walked away.

As he was walking away, I blurted out, Are you really the devil? Nothing that has been said about you seems true. He looked at me from over his shoulder, paused, and continued walking to his desk.

He faintly asked, Didn’t anyone teach you that the most dangerous things are also the most beautiful?

What he said was true, but I was also intrigued by him, enchanted
