Chapter 1: A Change of Heart

Kael stood on the rooftop of a towering skyscraper, the wind whipping his long, black coat as he peered through the scope of his high-powered rifle. The neon glow from the city's vast network of holographic billboards illuminated the darkness, casting an eerie light on his stoic face. He was the best in the business—a skilled assassin, feared by many and known only as a whisper in the shadows. Tonight's hit was no different, a high-ranking government official with a hefty price on his head.

As the target emerged from a lavish vehicle, surrounded by bodyguards, Kael's finger caressed the trigger, ready to end the man's life in a heartbeat. The cold metal of the rifle felt familiar in his hands, like an extension of his own body. He had done this a hundred times before, and he was always confident in the righteousness of his mission. That is, until he heard the conversation that would change everything.

The voices crackled through the hidden microphone Kael had planted earlier in the day. His target was speaking with a woman who appeared to be a close confidante. Their conversation was hushed, but the tone of desperation in the man's voice was unmistakable.

I don't understand why they're after me, the official said, his voice trembling. I've done nothing wrong. My only goal has been to help the people of this city.

The woman replied, her voice equally desperate. I know, but the syndicates don't care about right or wrong. They want power, and your policies threaten that.
