N. WS. Jokela

N. WS. Jokela, more commonly known as WindySilver, is a Finnish IT student and a hobbyist artist fighting a war against procrastination on the losing side. When her free time is not taken up by things like reading, procrastination, video games, watching series or more procrastination, she mainly writes sci-fi fanfiction and original flash fiction of various genres. While she dabbles in a lot of things ranging from digital art to jewelry to plants to whatever catches her interest, writing is her persistent forte. You should not give her yet another crazy flash fiction challenge to take part in because she simply cannot say "no" to it.

Untitled Hearts - N. WS. Jokela

    Introduction

    Hello there, reader!

It's great to see that you've chosen to pick my latest Flash Fiction Month collection. This year, I challenged myself only to write in already existing worlds whenever the day's prompt or challenge or the need to get a 55er out fast did not direct elsewhere. The lack of no fanfiction clause was actually not an oversight; around the time of FFM's beginning, I did have a short fanfic idea floating around my head, so I decided to save space for it, should the chance for it to be used come up. The chance did indeed come up late in the month and I got to kill two birds with one stone that day.

In addition to my self-imposed challenge, this year's FFM posed a whole new, unplanned personal challenge for me: I caught a massive monkey wrench called COVID early into the July. While I was fortunate enough to have a mild case, I spent a considerable part of the time I dedicated to FFM just grinding out enough words to form something that filled at least a bit of one of the unfilled gaps in my worlds that I had gathered together to help with deciding what to write this time around. Hence, there is likely to be a quality drop compared earlier years' work. It is what it is, however, and I'm proud that despite the hardship I was able to write a story a day throughout July 2022 and take on each challenge.

Since many of these stories are based on my previous work, you may want to check out what I have written before from my website. The 2021 compilations of my story worlds are currently available there for free while the 2022 editions including the stories found here will be available soon as well.

In any case, I hope you'll enjoy this collection. Stay tuned for my Tribble Month collections as well, as I will work on them from now on!

1: Is this the last one?

We stared at the command center. This, apparently, was the last known source of commands for the mechs. If we blew it up, we might be able to finally prevail over the mechs.

That is, if this was the last one. If it wasn't, the mechs would replace it relatively soon, unless other war tribes were keeping them busy. If it wasn't, our efforts would not have a lasting impact. If it wasn't, many of us would get killed for a moment's reprieve.

We still had to try. If it was the last one, our hesitation at the face of uncertainty would doom everyone else. If it was the last one, victory was within our grasp. If it was the last one, those who would die today would give their lives for a brighter future.

We looked at one another and nodded to everyone whose eyes we met. The risk had to be taken, for the sake of everyone who would survive regardless of whether or not we'd survive. We wouldn't be here if we weren't ready to take that risk.

Weapons and explosives ready, we headed out. This fight could very well be our last and it would be the most difficult one we've ever had to fight.
