INTRODUCTION

When we look around our natural world, we see a plethora of conflicts occurring at any given time. There are many armies fighting each other; sometimes they form alliances, only to find themselves fighting against the very ones who were once their allies a few years later. Every year, billions of dollars are spent to manufacture weapons, and billions more to support troops in battle.

What we don't often see is the war raging in the spirit realm. Unlike physical wars, it does not last a few years; rather, it has been ongoing since the beginning of time. It does not involve firearms, rockets, or bombs, though the enemy may persuade people to use them. Its price is measured in human lives rather than dollars, pounds, or euros. And it does not involve many armies, but only two: God's army and Satan's army.

These two armies are not equal, and neither are their commanders. God is the universe's infinite, all-powerful, and holy creator. Satan is a created being who is finite, powerful but limited, and corrupt. After losing his place in heaven as a result of his rebellion and attempt to conquer God's throne, Satan embarked on a mission to kill, steal, and destroy. He duped our forefathers into joining his rebellion, and through their obedience to him rather than to God, he gained rule over the earth.

God was not going to let that situation go on. As a result, God emptied himself taking on human form as the Lord Jesus Christ. He lived a perfect, blameless life before allowing Himself to be crucified as if He were a criminal, paying the penalty not for His own sins, but for the sins of all mankind, allowing us to re-establish our relationship with God. By His obedience, He overcame our forefathers' disobedience, reversed the handover of authority to Satan, and reclaimed the earth as part of God's Kingdom.

Satan was defeated by Christ's death. However, Satan does not readily give up power. Just as there were places after WWII where the enemy continued to fight and hold ground for a long time, the devil also continues to fight and hold his ground in the present. His fate is sealed, but in the meantime, he is determined to wreck as much havoc as he can.

Likewise, Satan does not confine his attacks to those who serve in God's army. He has no loyalty, love, or compassion, and will attack those who serve him just as easily as those who serve God. These attacks can take the form of direct spiritual oppression, physical assault, or attacks through other people (the devil's preferred weapon).
