Second Corinthians 10:4 contains thispowerful parenthetical statement: “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mightythrough God to the pulling down of strong holds” (KJV). What are these weapons? You mightimmediately think of the armor of God in Ephesians 6, which we have already discussed. Butremember, this list contains only one offensive weapon—the sword of the Spirit, which is theWord of God. The rest of the gear is strictly defensive (i.e., they are not listed as weapons). YetPaul says that we have mighty spiritual weapons (plural) for waging warfare and pulling downstrongholds. The question remains, what are these weapons? First, as I argued in chapter 6, it’simportant to keep in mind that Paul’s teaching on the armor of God is not meant to be taken toostrictly. Paul’s metaphor approximates God’s armor in Isaiah 59:15–18. It indicates a readiness forbattle against evil and injustice.
