Atma Bhog - Bhakti Marga Publications

    PREFACE

    Jai Gurudev!

A major part of the mission of Paramahamsa Vishwananda is closely connected to the practice of singing the Divine names. Bhajans are our daily spiritual nourishment: just as important as breathing and eating meals every day, so is singing God's Name in our lives. That's why Guruji named this collection 'Atma Bhog', which means 'food for the soul'.

We have collected more than 1000 bhajans in this book, all of them relevant to our sangha at a certain point in the last two decades. Everything that we could collect that Guruji has sung, plus bhajans and kirtans that He Himself composed, plus all the bhajans that the devotees have sung in countless events in Bhakti Marga sanghas around the globe. Most of the bhajans are traditional and ancient, but also many of these have been composed by Bhakti Marga devotees.

For each of these spiritual songs, the reader will find:

    • The lyrics, which are mostly in Sanskrit, Hindi or many of the other Indian languages;

    • The chords, which will provide the possibility for any musician (beginner or experienced, from any cultural background), to be able to accompany themselves while singing using diverse instruments; and

    • The translation/meaning of the song.

The chords selected for the different tunes are the simplest possible for the player. Ideally, the bhajan has to be transposed to fit the best range of the singer's voice in order to achieve the best performance, so one should be careful while using chords on more traditional Indian tunes. The form of the bhajans is signaled in an intuitive way by underlining the main choruses, using a simplified repetition sign (://) and indications like 'lead' and 'all'.

For this third edition of the Bhakti Marga bhajan book, the team was significantly expanded. More than 50 people offered their service so that we could, step-by-step, accomplish the task of finalising a current version that is in tune with the mission of Guruji now. And that is only the beginning! Now in the works: the making of books with chords for the Bhakti Marga daily prayers, and the main prayers we sing for each of the celebrated deities in the culture of the Hari Bhakta Sampradaya, as well as online extensions of those books and easier access to workshops and bhajan tutorials.

You should know that all available Bhakti Marga recorded bhajans are present in this book, and you can easily find the tracks to listen to on the internet (YouTube, plus different music streamers like Spotify, Apple Music, etc).

Nourish yourself spiritually by singing the Divine Names daily! It's our most sincere wish that anyone in the world is able to access this work, be inspired by it, and sing their hearts out to God. For suggestions, corrections, or experience sharings, please write to music@bhaktimarga.org. We'll be happy to hear from you.

    ABOUT

    PARAMAHAMSA VISHWANANDA

Paramahamsa Vishwananda carries the grace of two lineages: He is an ācārya in the Vaiṣṇava tradition as well as a direct disciple of Mahāvatār Bābāji in the kryā-yoga lineage. Masterfully weaving these two traditions together, His teachings focus on bhakti (loving devotion to God) through meditation, ritual, and service. Even more important than His lineage, however, Paramahamsa Vishwananda is a satguru (one who can bring devotees to the level of God-realisation), which means that the glory of God can be revealed through Him. He can make the unfathomable, unknowable Lord a personal and tangible experience.

Dedicating His life to uplifting humanity, He has brought back to the world a set of ancient meditation techniques that naturally help cultivate bhakti: Atma Kriya Yoga. To complement and deepen that inner experience, He uses the bhakti teachings of scriptures and the inspiration of bhakti saints to show everyone how to have their own unique and loving relationship with the Divine.

Throughout years of continual travel, teaching, and guiding, Paramahamsa Vishwananda has remained humble and humorous, bringing the most profound and subtle truths down to earth so that the same path that, traditionally, was pursued only by a few, is now accessible to all. His teachings can be found in His books, videos, spiritual tools and practices, livestream satsangas (spiritual Q&A), and online darśan blessings. Even more can be explored at local centres of His organisation known as Bhakti Marga (the path of devotion).

    6) In darkness (ignorance, tough times), the mantra of the Guru is the illumination (wisdom, support). With the Guru, all are saved.

    7) The Perfect Guru is found by great good fortune. By serving the Guru, one is not afflicted by pain and sorrows.

O friend! Chant the holy Name of the Guru. This is the only refuge. He is the sustainer of the world.

    1) How shall I praise the Guru, the Lord of the helpless. His Name is Merciful Lord. His job is to provide for and protect those who are suffering and helpless. The fortune of millions has been uplifted by the Guru. He is the sustainer of the world.

    2) What trust can we have in this material life? Simply remember the Guru. What are you thinking? Don’t waste this precious life. Hand over the rudder of your life (in the hands of the Guru), then you will be close to the shore (the destination). He is the sustainer of the world.

    3) Who is yours? What will go with you? Meditate upon the Guru. This body is futile. The illusions of the world are treacherous. Try to recognise the Guru. O ignorant resident of this worldly forest, why have you forgotten the Guru? He is the sustainer of the world.
