AuthorJai Gurudev!
Isn’t it beautiful to sing the Name of God? Let yourself be drawn into it. Such is the greatness of the Name of God, that whoever is singing it with an open heart, whoever is singing it with faith, will be pulled deeper inside. And the more you go into it, the more you lose yourself in this Divine Name, the more the identity of being human disappears. Because what remains is only Divine; that is that you all are. Remove the body and who are you? The soul, isn’t it?
What is the soul? The soul is without any stain. The stain is in the mind of man. So, by singing the Name of God – be it any aspect, such as Krishna, Jesus or Maa – you can remove this stain. However, you have to sing with devotion and Love.
It is nice when you join together and sing the Name of God. You create this vibration, you create this urge of merging into God. That’s why it is very important, if possible, wherever you are, to find a few people and sing. If you don’t know how to sing, just recite the Name. When you recite, picture the form of the Divine in your mind. Keep concentrating on the form in the mind and let yourself flow, let yourself just slide into this divine energy. And enjoy it! Remove all the darkness from the mind. Remove the barrier and just jump into bhakti.
- Paramahamsa Sri Swami Vishwananda
Foreword
Singing plays a major role in Paramahamsa Sri Swami Vishwananda's mission and His work. This collection of bhajans is accompanied by chords in an attempt to bring many beautiful bhajans to all who are interested in learning to play them on a harmonium, keyboard or guitar. Some of them, Paramahamsa Vishwananda has sung only once or twice, while others more often. Some of them are simple to learn and follow, some more challenging.
It has been about eight years since the first edition of Atma Bhog (then known as Bhajan Book with Chords) was completed. These have been very dynamic years, musically and spiritually, in Bhakti Marga and in the lives of all of us who live around our spiritual Master, whom we lovingly refer to as ‘Guruji’. Many of these bhajans have been sung on a regular basis by our Gurudev or the devotees in Shree Peetha Nilaya in Springen, Germany, and some of these beautiful songs have even been composed by them.
The need was obvious to include all of them in a single book for practical reasons. Alas, the job proved to be quite extensive and not that easy. The first step was to collect all of them and verify their accuracy using what were sometimes not the best recordings. Then the next step was to transcribe them all using all our available resources. Anyone who has already had experience with Indian devotional songs will know that they are sometimes spelled or written in various different ways. Although there is an International Standard Transliteration (from Sanskrit, Hindi, etc.) established by Sanskrit scholars which is internationally accepted, many Indians are still using different ways to spell and write the words from their native language into Romanised alphabet.
Let us take, for example, the word Gauri. This word you can find sometimes spelled as Gouri, Gowri, Gauree, Gouree, etc. Some may not see this as a big issue, but let us imagine an English word, for example, coffee. If we spelled it kofi, caufi, koffi, cofi, etc., this would prove quite a hindrance to read and understand, even though the pronunciation may not change much. To transliterate, say, Sanskrit from its Devanagari script into Roman script is challenging because it has nearly twice as many characters in its alphabet as English.
When we prepared the first edition of this book for publication, we were more carefree, so to speak, and did not pay so much attention to these details. As the number of bhajans being sung in our main Ashram and event centre, Shree Peetha Nilaya, grew and having experienced many people using the book and struggling with the pronunciation, it was obvious that a certain standardisation needed to be done. While working on the new bhajans, the need for it became even more apparent to us because we were working closely with native Indians who helped us with the translations. If the bhajan was not spelled properly, all of us struggled to figure out the correct meaning. Many of the bhajans we sing were taken from many traditions and parts of India. So apart from Sanskrit and Hindi, the two languages in which most bhajans are being sung in the West, we have been singing a number of bhajans written in various Indian languages and dialects such as: Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Bhojpuri, Awadhi, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, etc. So to correct the spelling and to find the translations for these bhajans was no easy task. The process was a slow one and we used the help that was available to us and for that we are deeply grateful to all who contributed in the translation process. Even if it was only a small contribution, for the production of this book, it was a great help.
In order to simplify their usage, the chords were adjusted to the scales that even beginner guitar or harmonium players can easily play. Bhajan/Kirtan/Prayer signs underneath the title of the song indicate which kind of composition it is. The meaning of Capo (0-3) indicates the suggested scale range, usually the one mostly commonly used by our singers. Sometimes if you find dadra/rupak etc tāl that is to help the drummers know which beat they should play. For most other bhajans the beats are keherwa (8 beat) or tīntal (16 beats) which are the basic beats found in the vast majority of bhajans. The sign ‘://’ means that the chorus repeats the whole line. If the bhajan has many verses, then they are numbered and the chorus part is underlined. Usually, between each verse the chorus (refrain) is sung.
This is by no means the last edition. Many bhajans are being discovered or created by Guruji and His devotees all over the world, as we strive to find new songs through which we can express our Love and devotion.
Be a chant collector and creator! Sing and sing, until your heart explodes for the Divine!
With all the glory that singing brings to all of our hearts, we offer this book unto the Divine!

Bhaja Nitāī Gaurānga
Rādhe Shyām
Japa Hare Krishna
Hare Rām
This mantra is regularly being sung at Shree Peetha Nilaya - the International Bhakti Marga Centre, located in Springen, Germany. It originates from Sri Radharaman Charana Das Babaji, a great saint who is considered to be the incarnation of both Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Nithyananda in One. He told us how all our sufferings could be easily removed and we could attain the highest goal of life – the attainment of the Lotus Feet of the Lord and His loving service – only through Sankirtan or the congregational chanting of His name ‘Bhaja Nitāī Gaur Radhe Shyam, Japa Hare Krishna Hare Ram.’ Since we, the slaves of the uncontrolled mind, would not easily believe Him, He mercifully took it upon Himself to demonstrate to us the inconceivable power of the Divine Name by curing diseases, melting stones, making trees dance and animals behave like devotee Vaishnavas and even by bringing the dead back to life through the chanting of this mantra. He taught both by example and by precept the religion of pure Bhakti in the same way Paramahamsa Vishwananda does today for us all. This is purely an extension and continuation of this sevā Sri Radharaman brought to the world.
We sing this mantra in numerous melodies, so we all have the freedom to pick up any tune, known or unknown, and add this wonderful and liberating mantra. That is why in this book we did not specifically write any chords for the use of this mantra.
Paramahamsa Vishwananda explains the meaning of the mantra 'Bhaja Nitāī Gaurānga Rādhe Shyām, Japa Hare Krishna Hare Rām' in the following words:
Bhaja
here stands for sevā. It stands for the service one is rendering. It is not a physical service, but it is a service to the world through vibration.
The aim of human life is to attain pure Love, so that you can truly say that you have loved God. There are stages to reach sacred Love-Prem. In this yuga, they always say that 'by chanting the Divine Name one achieves that level'.
So why Gaurānga? Gaurānga is a combination of Rādhā-Krishna, so that’s why we are singing Bhaja Nitāī Gaur
– service to Nitāī and Gaurānga, which is service to Rādhā-Krishna. At the same time 'Japa Hare Krishna Hare Rām' – with this, you are chanting the Mahāmantra also. So how you will reach the Love is by chanting and through the Grace of Prabhu Nityānanda - then Mahāprabhu can give Himself. Because if Nityānanda Prabhu says something, Mahāprabhu cannot refuse. It is the same if Rādha says something to Krishna, Krishna cannot refuse. That is why it is said that Rādhārānī is more wonderful than Krishna Himself."

Main Kis Da Mān Kare Sān,
Charon Chugan Meriyan Chichad Bhariyan,
Main Kehdi-Kehdi Malmal Ho Sān.
Ek Saban Thoda Utto Mail Baitherri,
Main Kehde-Kehde Kapde Dho Sān,
Bulleh Shah Murshad Je Main Na Mileyo,
Main Baith Kinare Ro Sān)
(I am not beautiful, and I have no good qualities. I cannot bring peace to anybody. My body is so dirty that there is no soap that can make it clean. Bulleh Shah says to himself, where can I start to make myself clean. I cannot find myself and I sit at the shore and I cry.)

1) Gurudeva, give to this servant just one drop of mercy. I am lower than a blade of grass. Give me all help. Give me strength. Let me be as You are, without desires or aspirations.
2) I offer You all respects, for thus I may have the energy to know You correctly. Then, by chanting the Holy Name in great ecstasy, all my offenses will cease.
3) When will such mercy fall to this one who is weak and devoid of intelligence? Allow me to be with You.
4) If You examine me, You will find no qualities. Your mercy is all that I am made of. If You are not merciful unto me, I can only weep, and I will not be able to maintain my life.
5) O Gurudeva, Sri Swami Vishwananda, give to this servant just one drop of mercy!

1) All around me is darkness. Where else can I go when I am caught up in the storms? Lord, we are like orphans calling out to You as You are the only One to remove us from the darkness.
2) My boat is on the ocean of illusion and is being tossed to and fro. I plea with You to come and reveal Yourself to us so that we may be freed from the illusion. Not one more moment is possible to live without glimpse of You
3) Home lies at Your Feet, so there is where my final destination is, which is brighter than the millions of stars, such is the blessing.
4) When you serve His Lotus Feet that is when you receive freedom. When you are singing His glories, you realize He is the only Doer. The wisdom that pours from your Guru is that which gives life.
5) Without the grace of your Guru you cannot free yourself from illusion. Give us your blessing that we will never be able to leave Your Lotus Feet. And may this humble devotee of Yours forever sing the glory of Yours.

1) O mind, just worship the Lotus Feet of the Spiritual Master.
He is the blissful embodiment of Krishna's mercy and the abode of compassion for souls who are suffering in the material world. He enlightens us in transcendental knowledge, pure devotion, and divine love. The spiritual Master is the saviour of the fallen conditioned souls!
2) O mind, just worship the Lotus Feet of the Spiritual Master.
While the fallen soul wanders throughout the fourteen worlds, it rarely gets an opportunity to receive a human birth. And out of so many human beings, we have the great fortune of receiving Swami Vishwananda's darshan!
3) O mind, just worship the Lotus Feet of the Spiritual Master. Without His mercy, we have no strength/power in our sadhana. Therefore, O mind, worship and serve Him at every moment!
4) O mind, just worship the Lotus Feet of the Spiritual Master. His glories are described in all shrutis, smritis and Purānas. Let's offer our body, mind and all life itself at the Lotus Feet of the Guru and remain always engaged in chanting Shrī Hari Nāma!
