Wild Friends of Wilderness Way - Maggie Cedarberg

    Chapter 1

Tell us again, Grampa. What was Candy Town like? begged Gail, as she hip-hopped around the kitchen.

Gordy chimed in, Did the trees really have a picture of an eagle burned on them?

You have to see it for yourselves, Grampa told his two grandchildren.

Gordy, eleven years old and Gail, eight years old, were bouncing off the walls - too excited to eat breakfast. (Now that’s excited.) Mom had made pancakes for Pete’s sake!

Grampa laughed, Put ‘em in the cooler, Dora. We’ll stop for a picnic after we put on a few miles.

Mom was reciting an endless list of instructions, Wear your seatbelt at all times; Don’t eat too much junk food; use sunscreen; obey Grampa…

Nods from the three travelers. Okay, Mom, we’ll be good, they answered.

Don’t worry, Dora, I’ll take good care of them.

I know, Dad, sniffed Dora, as she kissed and hugged and hugged some more.

As Grampa backed his SUV (grampa calls it the tank) down the driveway, windows down, Gordy, Gail and Grampa waved and shouted goodbyes and I love yous as Mom waved and shouted, Don’t forget to brush your teeth…I love you all.

Are we almost there, Grampa? Gail giggled. She knew it drove grown-ups nuts when kids asked that.

    Gordy said, I’m hungry.

Grampa laughed and started singing at the top of his lungs, Home, home in the forest. Where the moose and the polar bear wrestle…

Gail and Gordy joined in. (Is that a flock of honking geese flying over? No, just Grampa, Gail and Gordy singing up a storm.)

Grampa said, This is way more fun traveling with you two musicians than riding all by myself.

You should take us on all your business trips, Gail said.

Tell us again where we’re going, Gordy said.

Way up north where the forest and the waterfalls and the rivers and tons of other nature hang out, Grampa said.

Are we part of nature? Gail asked.

Yes, ma’am, Grampa said. Human nature.

Why did you go there the first time? Gordy asked.
