    Chapter 1

You need some time off, Susan. The look on her boss's face allowed no argument.

But, I... she started, but he cut her off with a quick wave of his hand.

I know there's nothing you love more than work, and you've hardly given yourself a break in the past year. Not even a long vacation was in it, that's not possible! I'm really worried about you, you seem stressed and depressed and you've gotten very thin. You should get some pampering. His eyes rested on her worriedly and Susan waved her hand in annoyance.

Nonsense! I'm fine and I'm skinny on purpose. There's nothing professionally wrong with that, or do you have reason to complain?

James sighed. You're my best horse in the stable, Susan, you know that too. But if you keep going like this, you will eventually break down! You're just a shadow of yourself. Now the quieter time is just beginning, the annual accounts are done and the next big project doesn't start until April. Use the coming weeks and relax. Take an extended, long vacation, then you'll be fit for the stress that will soon be upon us again.

Susan kneaded her fingers. Her left foot tapped impatiently.

Are you almost finished with your presentation? I know best myself what I need and what I don't. And I really don't want to go on holiday all alone.

She paused at the words. Of course she would have to go alone, who else could she take with her besides her mother or her sister?

Since breaking up with David, she had thrown herself headlong into work, devoting all her time to the job. Her success proved her right - she had had a great career and now she was the only woman in senior management at the company. With an annual salary that would make many a man green with envy.

And unfortunately that was the problem - on the one hand she had too little time to take care of her private life, on the other hand most men shy away from her success.

Her confident aura put off many potential candidates, and work had become a substitute for personal life. She didn't even have time for friends anymore, so they withdrew more and more.

James pushed a prospectus across the table. I recommend this hotel to you, he said. It's in the south of France, beautiful and specializing in stressed-out career women.

Susan frowned and picked up the prospectus. Hotel Desire, she read. The house looked beautiful indeed. Located in the French Provence, in the midst of gentle vineyards, it promised luxury, wellness and absolute relaxation.

It's only for women, so unfortunately I can't tell you about it from personal experience. But I've only heard good things about it. Try it out, you can easily afford it. Take two weeks and relax, we can do without you for that long. Promised.

I can't... she protested, but James slapped the desk with his palm and frowned.

It's not a request, it's an order, he growled. You're on the limit, Susan, you know that yourself. Therefore, I now decide that you take all of the rest of your vacation from last year before you finally collapse and we have to do without you for months. So do me and yourself a favor, get on the plane and get out of the field. We'll see each other again at the beginning of April.

She rolled her eyes, but took the prospectus and said goodbye.

In the car, she glanced in the rearview mirror. James was right - she looked tired and drained. Her gaunt face was pale, her blue eyes were dark circles that even the carefully applied make-up couldn't hide, and the corners of her mouth turned down unattractively.

She used to be a fun-loving, sensual woman - before David left her because he had landed a successful, well-paid wife. The breach of trust still pained her, although the fact that she herself was now earning many times what he used to bring home gave her satisfaction.

If only he knew what he had missed!

But David hasn't gotten in touch for a long time, nor have Jill, Nicole or Bernadette, their former friends. After forgetting birthdays and constantly canceling appointments at the last minute for work reasons, the women gave up and stopped calling. Susan missed them, mostly when she had a few idle hours on Sundays after gym training and before preparing for any meetings that she didn't know how to fill.

South of France - she had never been to France but had certain ideas fueled by James' prospectus. Spring was definitely more advanced there than in England, and when she closed her eyes for a moment, she could almost feel the sun tingling on her skin.

She sighed and thought about her last vacation, which was two years ago. She and David had been to Thailand and just laid on the beach for weeks. Unfortunately, while there, they both discovered how bored they were of each other, and along the way, David met a single, successful career woman.

It was only a good year later that he revealed to her that he had met the woman after the vacation and had started an affair with her. A world collapsed for Susan at the time, but after David moved out of the shared apartment, she pulled herself together and from then on concentrated on her job, in which she became more and more successful.

She had been working with James for a year now, and he recognized her ambition and discipline right away, so she didn't have to wait long for the next promotion.

And today? Today he was worried about her and ordered her to go on vacation. In a hotel that had been recommended to him and which, at least in the brochure, looked really great.

Determined, she started the engine and drove home. Your decision was made.

    Chapter 2

The sun did shine, as expected, and there was a pleasant warmth inside the big Lexus that had picked them up from Marseille airport. The car glided along the almost empty country lanes at a leisurely pace.

They passed small villages whose market places were very busy at this time of the day. Unfortunately, the young driver who picked her up spoke poor English, and Susan's knowledge of French was beyond sketchy, so conversation was out of the question.

So she just stared out the window and stole glances at her Blackberry, which announced new e-mails every minute. James had forbidden her to take care of the company during the holiday, but the grip was too practiced, too familiar, for her to simply refrain from it now.

After a good hour the car approached an old house whose gray walls could only be seen from behind a well-grown driveway. The boy deftly steered the Lexus down a narrow path and stopped in front of the old winery's entrance.

Madame, nous sommes arrivés, he said, smiling kindly as he opened the back door for her.

Susan got out and enjoyed the warm sun. A pleasant respite from the gloomy weather that had prevailed in England.

Merci, she said politely as the boy heaved her suitcase out of the back and motioned for her to lead the way. A little hesitantly, she put one foot in front of the other and approached the wide front door. The gravel crunched under her heels.

As she took the first step of the stairs, the gate magically opened and she entered a spacious, elegantly furnished lobby.

Bonjour, Madame! An attractive dark haired boy approached her smiling and greeted her with three air kisses on her cheek. My name is Jean, today I would like to welcome you to the Hotel Desire. His French accent was cute but quite difficult to understand.

The boy was a head taller than her, but must have been at least ten years younger. Susan put him in his mid-twenties. His athletic frame was clad in a casual tank top that revealed an Asian tattoo on his left bicep, and even the cut-off jeans didn't seem quite in keeping with the hotel's upscale ambience. His face was sharp and reminded her of ancient stone statues.

The muscles in his upper arm fascinated her and she could hardly take her eyes off them. What a handsome young man!

Er, what? She felt her cheeks getting red. She must have dreamed a little too much and not listened to what Jean had to say.

I'll take you to your suite, on the first floor, he repeated patiently, still smiling, and took the suitcase from the driver's hand, who nodded briefly and then silently disappeared outside. Susan followed Jean through the spacious entrance hall to a wide stone staircase.
