    LEADERSHIP RE-CHARGE - Dr. Lawanne' S. Grant

    Introduction

    PLUG-IN

Before you take this journey, I think it’s important to know how it started before you arrive at the final destination.

I was traveling to present at a leadership conference in Cleveland, Ohio. Preparation for me begins long before I arrive to an assignment. Hence, my visuals were ready, talking points were rehearsed, my outfit was coordinated, and my tank for public speaking was FULL! The only thing left for me to do was to show up and shift the way people lead. Thriving in such a space is very comfortable because my life’s mandate is to share theory and practice that positively impacts the leader’s ME (mind and execution). I believe that if your thoughts are evaluative and forward-thinking, your behavior and execution will remain relevant and effective.

I was ready to go, but transportation messaged to inform me that they would arrive 10-15 minutes later than expected. That gave me a little extra time, which I appreciated. I spoke with my husband, and after he prayed for me, I grabbed my coat from the closet with sliding glass doors. It was across from the mirror on the wall in the vanity area. My position allowed me to see myself from the front, back, and sides. I thought I was cuter than usual that night, so I took a picture to capture the moment. I rarely take selfies in the mirror, but this time I did. While trying to get the perfect angle, I noticed that my cell phone was still connected to the charger and block, although it was removed from the socket in the wall. I didn’t think anything of it until I sat at the airport, swiped left on my phone, and began looking at the photos from the weekend.

While waiting to board my return flight, God’s voice spoke, Lawanne’, don’t forget to spend time with me absent of your agenda. Mmmm…I looked back at the photos, attempting to correlate what I heard with what I saw. I mean, wasn’t God going to tell me that He was pleased with what I had just done? Nope! His words to me were, …the one who gives charge to others needs to be recharged by Me.

Tears immediately began to build. I tried to hold the oceanic flood back so that the people in the airport wouldn’t look at me strangely, but the consuming power of the Holy Spirit didn’t allow this to happen. You see, God was challenging me to unplug from the comforts of my routine and plug into Him more deeply. I’ve been at this relationship-building thing with God for a few decades now, so I know I can depend on Him when I feel low. But at this moment, God wanted me to make a greater commitment to seek Him in the same way during the high moments of life.

RECHARGE: to refresh, restore, or revitalize.

You don’t have to wait until you’re almost spiritually dead to recharge. Recharge can happen anytime, giving you the stamina to operate at optimal levels in every area of your life (Psalms 51:12). I pray that you grab this spiritual nugget quickly.

Good News! There’s a Leadership RE-charge survey on page 126. Take the assessment before and after your journey. This will help to compare where you are now versus where you’ll land after these 30 days.

As you step forward on this journey, you will find one word coupled with its traditional definition and supporting scripture for the leadership focus of the day. After a brief dialogue, you’ll be challenged to take action because that’s what leaders do to affect change. Don’t stop there. Say aloud the divinely inspired confession and prayer. Use the space provided to journal your thoughts, feelings, and plan of action resulting from your spiritual charge.

When I took my first RE-charge journey, I had clear instructions to write everything down. I’m glad I did because now I can share the principles with you. I hope you will invite someone to accompany you on this journey or give them this roadmap to a long-overdue recharge.

Lastly, I want to share that I asked God if the subtitle of this book could be: 30-day Devotion for Leaders so as not to specify Christian Leaders. This is mainly because I provide coaching and training services to corporate and religious leaders. Therefore, I wanted to ensure that this book is received universally. Needless to say, God’s response to my repeated question didn’t match the desired answer! I believe it’s because the magnitude of what you’re getting ready to experience can only come from above. The daily recharge will empower you to lead and love like Jesus Christ, whether you’re in the marketplace or ministry.

    - Accountability -

Yielding control and being responsible to a more powerful authority.

    Romans 13:1

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. (NIV)
