GEOFF SIGHED AS HE SLID NAKED INTO THE SECLUDED LAKE’S COOL WATER.

He submerged and let himself float back to the surface, where he admired the moonlight playing off the gentle waves and the surrounding rocks, woods and campsite. He closed his eyes and tried not to think about work. Thank goodness he’d booked the vacation months ago, and thank God vacations were practically sacrosanct. Otherwise the boss would have him running reports now, late into this warm, perfect summer night. Even hundreds of miles away, Geoff could feel the tension. But the cool water was starting to ease that tension.

Geoff moved his hand, creating little waves. He focused on their delicate sounds, trying to center himself in stillness. He breathed out and detected crickets and a warm breeze playing through the trees. Nothing more. By some fluke the other campsites around the lake were unoccupied, the product of in-between days of vacationers’ long weekend plans.

He let himself float a while and gently paddled around the lake, trying to leave work thoughts in his wake. After a time, he did something he hadn’t done since he was a kid and floated on his back.

Skinny dipping was something else he hadn’t done for a long time.
