Chapter 1

My back aches. I have spent the last five hours wedged between two strangers on a fifteen hour flight to Bali. I would normally fly first class with my husband Vince, but we had to make room for his 20 year old mistress Ava at the last minute. As a successful lawyer, Vince needs the occasional break, so we take an annual vacation to unwind. This trip was planned months ago and Ava wasn’t Vince’s legal assistant back then. She hadn’t become his lover. I hadn’t been replaced.

Vince thought that I should offer my first class seat up to Ava because her comfort is important to him. As his wife, her comfort needs to be a priority to me too, so I happily obliged in giving my seat away. The way Vince sees it, I am his wife, so my duty to make him happy. It’s what I signed up for. Ava on the other hand, agreed to nothing. She is not his wife. She is not his property. She hasn’t given herself away to him. But I have. She is here for her own pleasure as much as for his. So he must respect her. He must treat her well so that she will stay. He must always prioritize the needs of his paramour over me because I would never leave... but she could. One of my new duties as a wife is to make sure that my husband’s favorite toy is well cared for.

We transferred my first class ticket to Ava and booked the last available seat in economy for me. I have learned to make my husband happy by pampering the woman who can satisfy him. Something that I haven’t been able to do for him in years.
