Looking Back At Me - C S McGhee

    EPILOGUE.

Numbness and shock filled my mind as I lay on my side, pressed between the frigid and hard dirt and the smooth, warm metal of the car. The weight of the car squeezed down on the lower part of my body with relentless intensity; it didn’t hurt as I had expected. Instead, I felt numb. However, I could feel the car grinding my body more and further into the hard ground. My lung was on fire; I could neither inhale nor exhale; my thoughts were racing faster than my mind, and I had a hard time processing the thought fast enough. What had just happened?

Vaguely, I heard cars whiz past me in the distance, totally unaware of what had happened and how trapped I was. I tried to call out for help, but my voice was stuck; all I could do was wait, either wait for someone to help me or wait for my death to come.

Then the car gave a little whine of protest as it tilted and shook on the side and dangerous angle that it was lying on. My body reacted as it jolted itself out of its numb mode into panic mode. My body jolted sporadically as I panicked and tried to free myself; when I jerked left, the car jerked right, and when I tilted right, the car tilted left. Then the car tilted to the right for the last time, and with my eyes tightly close, I felt the car roll, the windshield crash, and the glass shards pierce my upper body. Then it stopped.

I opened my eyes when all I heard was silence; all I saw was a black road in the distance above me. The first thought that came to my mind was that the scene seemed strangely familiar. Have I been in a similar position before? When was that? Then I blacked out.

Ava? Are you with us, Ava?

I awoke to a handsome face that I’d never recalled meeting. I frowned and looked around; then my eyes widened at the sight of white sheets, white walls, white curtains, white ceilings, and white bed frames. I wasn’t at home. I knew that much. My house wasn’t this bland and sterile; it also didn’t carry the faint scent of chemicals that I couldn’t put a finger on.

Where am I? I asked. I was getting perturbed.

"At the hospital, still in the emergency room. That was quite a bang you’ve got going on your head.

At the doctor’s mention, I cautiously raised my hands to identify a throbbing pain. My gentle fingers identified the wad of gauze high on my forehead. What happened? I asked cautiously.

You were in an accident, remember?

Me? I tried. I really tried to remember but came up blank, and the throbbing in my head further discouraged me. I don’t remember being in an accident. As far as I know, I don’t think I’ve been in an accident before.

I raised my eyes just in time to catch the dubious and wary look of the handsome doctor. "I don’t think this is a first. You were lucky
