Introduction

My intention is to make this little book about modern shamanism as simple as possible. Simplicity is hard to achieve when the content is complex, yet it’s worth a try. The content mustn’t be lost in a maze of phrases and arguments; any detours and digressions should be omitted to the extent they can be.

Nor is this book a retelling of the history of shamanism in all its forms around the world. That story has been told many times already, and it has proved to be quite a challenge for anthropologists, ethnologists, archaeologists, psychologists and doctors.
