Introduction
It was a cool Summer morning in Loftr, Norway. I was standing at the entrance of the main exhibit of the Loft Viking museum, one of the most popular destinations for people interested in Viking history and culture. The place was filled with families and travelers like myself, all of them thrilled to see and learn about the Viking artifacts in the museum.
Of course, the star of the show was the massive Viking longship that took up most of the room in the main exhibit. Although it was over a thousand years old, it was still imposing and extended to an impressive 121 feet long. Most children and their parents instantly fluttered towards the massive ship, while others took pictures of the massive swords and shields. Some were looking at pictures of the archaeological sites where they found the artifacts, and still others were gathering around a tour guide, explaining where and how the longship was propelled (by oars and sails), how much it weighed (20 tons), and how fast it could go (up to 15 knots, the equivalent of 11 miles per hour). A young couple behind me were wondering aloud where the horned helmets were, but like many things about the Vikings, horned helmets are a myth.
After seeing (and being very impressed by) the huge swords and shields, I headed towards the massive longship, but on my way there, something smaller and more enigmatic caught my attention: a rock carved with strange symbols I’d never seen before. I approached the exhibit, curious about the markings on the rock. The pattern of the symbols, the geometric shapes, the way they were distributed along the surface, the precision with which they were carved, and the fact that they were so simple and, at the same time, so alien to me—everything about the inscription captivated me. This was my first encounter with runes, an experience that would lead to years of study and self-discovery—and, more importantly become a source of guidance and joy in my life.
Did you know that the word ‘rune’ means ‘secret’ or ‘mystery?’ Perhaps it is no coincidence that most of us see runes as an enigma to be solved, something we struggle to understand but, at the same time, can’t stay away from. Or maybe it’s human nature to feel such fascination for things we are not familiar with but which feel powerful enough to change our fate. Or maybe, just maybe, the runes themselves call to us because deep down, we can feel their power.
In my case, it was a combination of all three that made me want to learn everything I could about runes, their history, their magic, and their power to improve my life.
My name is Zara Greene, and I am a traveler and a seeker of truth in the world around me. I am also the child of a seer and an empath. My mother had the ability to see the extraordinary in ordinary things. She taught me that there is a strong connection between the spiritual and daily life—a connection we should not ignore. My mother believed that if we paid attention to the world around us, the Universe would guide us towards the best possible future.
I understood my mother’s words—in theory, at least—but I always struggled to find a guide, a tool to help me understand the truth of the world around me and how I could connect with that truth. This need for guidance in my life is probably why I am fascinated by the wonders of everyday things, constantly looking for ways to create something new out of the pieces of something else or find the whole in things that have been fragmented.
You see, I am a mosaicist. I love the idea of bringing together stones, crystals, and glass, turning them into something more significant than the sum of the parts. The idea of finding beauty in broken pieces and using those fragments to create something entirely new is what motivates me to create. I am an artistic soul who expresses herself by creating new worlds out of old broken ones, and perhaps this need to create a piece of art out of smaller, unrelated pieces is why I grew fascinated with the power of Norse magic and runes.
I discovered that day in the museum in Norway that my idea of Viking society and culture was utterly wrong. Before I started studying Norse magic and runes, I believed the lies popular culture had always told me about Vikings—that they were nothing more than illiterate, blood-thirsty barbarians who destroyed everything they touched.
But this portrayal of Viking society couldn’t be farther from the truth. Vikings had a rich culture imbued with religion, poetry, and spiritual practices, and they left an astounding number of documents carved in stone, using those mysterious symbols called runes.
The nature of runes and their importance in Viking society goes beyond the little tiles on which the Norse wrote their alphabet. Yes, runes were the alphabet Vikings used, but they are so much more than that.
Although runes were originally developed by Germanic tribes in the north of Europe, Vikings brought them home from their travels and embraced them as their own. They used runes while in their travels—leaving runic inscriptions to express the poetic side of their culture, verses or whole poems etched in monuments at their destinations—but also for more mundane tasks, like claiming ownership of an object. Runes were the perfect tool that made life both easier and more beautiful, since they provided a way to tell stories, keep records, and establish a link to a spiritual life.
Vikings relied on runes not only for writing, but also to tell fortunes, cast spells, and provide protection to their people. What most people don’t realize is that, in Norse culture, the practices of writing, religion, and magic were intertwined through the use of runes. Scandinavian religions worshiped Odin and Freyja, and runes were used as part of magic rituals associated with these deities.
Norse magic and, by extension, runes focus on two principle concepts: divination and fate. In this book, I will explain both how to use runes for divination, but more importantly, I will explain how the practice of reading runes can affect your fate.
Fate plays a big role in Norse myth and magic, but the idea of fate is a little different for the Vikings than in other religions. When it comes to fate and destiny, Norse magic works within its structure to bring change to a person’s life or to a community. It’s almost like weaving: Norse magic tries to see the smaller parts that make up the whole, understand it, and then rebuild the parts that are not up to our standards. You may be wondering, How did they expect to do this?
It’s very simple: through the power of words.
Northern Europeans believed that words created reality instead of the other way around, and the Vikings were no exception. They believed that reality, the world as we experience it, is created by words. Think about it for a second: if words have world-building power, what power will we find in the symbols that create these words? What does this say about the letters we group together to
