“I loved this book. It gave me information on how to use both the male and female energies within myself. This helped me in my daily life and I was able to change some patterns that were no longer beneficial for me. I also found the guided meditation very helpful and easy to follow.”
Pamela Lynn

“My husband committed suicide several months before I started reading this book again recently. It was such a relief to explore and accept many of the gender concepts and behaviors that were part of our 45-year relationship. I learned more about balance, neutrality and focusing my attention in the present – especially in relation to anger, guilt, responsibility and forgiveness. As I continue to process his passing, the information and spiritual techniques presented are vital to my everyday life in moving through the many emotions, decisions, tasks and events in my newly widowed life.”

Male and Female Energies - Mary Ellen Flora

    INTRODUCTION

As a young child, I was happy in my protected family environment and ignorant of society’s demands and preconceived ideas around gender. I believed in God with an unwavering faith and knew that I was here on Earth to serve God. I believed that when I came of age, I would be told how to fulfill my spiritual path. It never occurred to me that the gender of my body would be a consideration in relation to my work. I was happy in my childhood world of learning, growing and waiting until I was old enough to do my spiritual work. I talked to God and Jesus and believed that everyone else did also. Everyone told me I was a tomboy since I liked to ride horses, climb trees, play in the dirt, and have lots of animals. I did not play with dolls and knew I was not going to have children of my own. I did not consider any of my characteristics as gender-oriented, but the society of my childhood had many limiting concepts about gender.

When I turned twelve years old, I believed it was time for me to take an adult role in life. I took confirmation class at my church believing this would be the place to learn of my path and duties as an adult. I was very disappointed. I began asking questions about my spirituality and how to fulfill my purpose and ended a wonderful friendship with my minister, since he could not answer my questions. I went then to ask my father. My father was frightened by what I was asking. I became very angry because no one could help me discover my spiritual path for this lifetime. I was tired of waiting for my spiritual purpose and believed I was ready to fulfill my calling. Ah, the impatience and impertinence of youth. Fortunately, I eventually discovered my purpose and path because I did not allow limits to stop my development.

Looking back on that time, it is clear the society of my childhood could not conceive of a woman as a minister much less of a girl who believed she was destined to serve God and wanted information about the correct direction to follow. The adults were afraid for and of me, as they knew my beliefs and desires would not fit into the existing society. I remained angry for a long time and finally turned my talents and interests to the intellectual realm which was an acceptable thing to do in my particular part of the world. I was thirty-one years old before I found my way to professionally follow my spiritual path and the partner with whom I was to follow my path.

Fortunately, I had many spiritually encouraging times between ages twelve and thirty-one. One important experience occurred when I was fifteen years old and had the privilege of attending a YMCA World Youth Conference as the delegate from the state of Virginia. That experience saved my life. It was there that I discovered that the world was filled with a variety of people and belief systems and that being in a female body did not need to be a limit to my life purpose. I enjoyed observing men and women working together and sharing responsibilities equally. I found people who would discuss my questions with me and who were not afraid of my beliefs. I discovered that the world is a big place with room for everyone to fulfill their mission.

From the time I was a girl until now, a great deal has occurred in society to diminish limits in relation to gender: from broadening the range of gender identities to the dissolution of traditional gender roles, even including the ability to physically change genders. Men are more active in parenting and women are more active in the workplace. Both women and men are experiencing greater freedom in life choices. The world is letting go of old concepts and allowing creative growth. We have moved from my mother’s idea of suitable professions for a woman, such as a mother, secretary, nurse or teacher, to the opportunity for women to do any job they are capable of doing. We have grown from my father’s idea of men not doing work in the house to men performing an equal amount, or sometimes a majority, of the household duties. These changes are no coincidence, the world is not only changing physically but is also rebalancing energetically.

These spiritual and physical changes are a healing process for all of humanity. We are learning to balance the dichotomy of male and female within and around us. The changes we are observing are manifestations of the new balance of male and female energies within each individual and on planet Earth. It is now possible for everyone to achieve a new level of spiritual maturity by learning to use these vibrations to manifest the spark of spirit within. By looking within and balancing male and female energies within our unique bodies, we can help the world around us balance also. Spiritual techniques are presented in the last chapter to assist you to focus spiritually.

It is exciting to see that many of my childhood beliefs were true and that gender does not need to be an interference in one’s lifework. It is also a delight to look back and see that the world has grown into many of the ideas I had as a child. Many people have had this experience because an entire generation has dreamed and created these changes, allowing progress to happen. All we need to fulfill our dreams is the desire to have them and the belief that we can have them. Patience, perseverance, and a willingness to learn and grow complete the formula. Every generation makes progress from the previous one by putting what they know as spirit into physical practice. By consciously knowing its spiritual information and following through by doing something about it physically, each generation brings its growth pattern into the world.

At this time, we need to become spiritually aware to see that the female and male dichotomy exists in everything and we can learn to balance and use these vibrations within ourselves for our spiritual and physical creativity. Learning to understand both female and male energies and bodies is part of our spiritual journey on Earth. Each generation learns more and leaves the next one a richer environment and world.

This present time challenge is to balance our energies so we can more fully manifest our Divine nature. This balancing act is often challenging and can even be violent in its process. As the planet moves to more balance, we experience many changes in everything on Earth.

THE SPIRITUAL PURPOSE OF MALE AND FEMALE ENERGIES

God is whole. There is no division or separation within the totality of God or the Cosmic Consciousness. For spiritual creativity to take place on the physical level, there needs to be division and opposites, so we create divisions to learn about creativity. There has to be light and dark, positive and negative, wet and dry, hot and cold, acid and base, and all of the many other dichotomies so that physical creation can manifest. Male and female energies are a division of the whole. They are similar to positive and negative energies which are found in everything from a single cell to the entire planet.

Female and male vibrations exist in everything of a physical nature. These vibrations are not limited to the gender of bodies. Female and male energies exist for the purpose of creation. The creation we see when male and female bodies join to form another body is representative of the creative power of these vibrations throughout every realm of life. Whether the positive and negative poles are in animal, mineral, vegetable or chemical form, they make creation possible.

The creativity of opposites is seen in the physical world from our small planet throughout the Cosmos. In our world, when positive and negative poles are balanced, we have electric light. We also see male and female energies at their creative work in flowers, bees, trees and people. These opposites create plants, honey, fruit and babies. In the cosmic scene, we see the creation and destruction of planets and galaxies because of the positive-negative interaction. Whether we study chemistry, biology, physics, modern medicine, or metaphysics, we encounter positive and negative energies. Female and male energies are one way in which negative and positive vibrations manifest.

Male and female energies are vibrations that exist in everything. They exist in every body whether of the male or female gender. Men and women have both of these vibrations with which to create and communicate. These energies are of a spiritual as well as a physical nature, and we can learn to master their use in our creativity on Earth. Whether, like Edison, we are creating a light bulb, or like many people, creating a baby, we need to balance the male-female dichotomy in order for the system to work. If you have too much positive or negative, the light will not shine. If you do not have a proper balance of male and female hormones, the egg will not be fertilized. Light and life depend on this balance of opposites.

There is no judgment associated with these opposites. They are forces of energy used in creativity. Unfortunately, positive and negative have been mistakenly associated with the concept of good and bad. They have no association with ethics other than what we put on them. Male and female vibrations are forces of energy. Whatever ethical or judgmental considerations one has toward these words need to be cleansed in order to relate to the energies effectively. No energy is innately good or evil. We create good and evil by how we use energy.

Everyone is spirit. Everything is of a spiritual nature. We as spiritual beings are learning about creating. Our female and male energies are part of the creative system about which we need to learn. We have to learn about male and female vibrations within and around us to be in charge of our creativity. We have to learn how to identify them and use them for our creative process. Everyone has both male and female energies within their body. Male and female energies are also in everything around us including other bodies, chemical reactions, plants, minerals, and so forth. We can observe and experience the male and female energies within and around us both through their characteristics and through an increased awareness of how these vibrations work in the physical world.

To regain our spiritual awareness and creativity, we need to remember the female and male aspects of our creativity and that balancing these vibrations is necessary to create the light of spirit within ourselves. Just as the positive-negative balance must be correct for light to come from a light bulb, so our male-female balance must be correct for the light of spirit to shine from within us. This spiritual lesson about male and female is taught by many world religions, esoteric teachings, and through parables and stories.

From Genesis and the story of Adam and Eve, continuing throughout the Judeo-Christian Bible, there are stories of male and female in the creative process of human development. There are many stories of one man and woman starting a nation, such as Abraham and Sarah. The story of Noah collecting the animals in pairs to rejuvenate life after the flood indicates the importance of the male-female aspect in the formula of life. Throughout most religious texts, there are stories that highlight and examine the significance of the creative principle of female and male.

The story of the birth of a child, such as Jesus Christ, is also a spiritual lesson about the need for the female and male balance in order for the birth of the light of God to occur within the individual and the world. Jesus represents the Christ or Light of God coming into the world. Mary and Jesus represent the female and male principles of creativity which conduct the light of God just as negative and positive energies conduct light through a light bulb. This story is intended to tell us to balance our male and female energies within our personal system to spiritually birth the Christ within us. Similar stories are told in several religious traditions so the spiritual information about balancing our energies to bring in our spiritual light would not be lost to humanity. Just as Jesus Christ, Buddha and other teachers brought the light of God into the world, we can bring that light into our bodies and our personal systems.

Male and female energies are for physical and spiritual creativity. We practice this creative balance in the physical world so we can use these vibrations to create with as spirit. When we learn to balance these energies correctly for our individual system, we are able to manifest the light of spirit in our bodies. This light is often called Christ and Christ within is what we are all meant to be. By balancing the dichotomy of female and male, we become less divided and in turn become more balanced and whole.

God is whole. God is spirit. God is not divided in any way and is not male or female. I once knew a spiritual teacher who told me that God is more male than female. I knew that
