PREFACE
Where does magic come from? Was it created? Is it a gift or a natural ability? Are the magical a superior race? Why do most magical folk require the use of a wand? Why might others consider wands a weakness? How do non-magical parents produce magically gifted offspring while on rare occasion a non-magical child is born to parents of magical ability? Why is magical ability not vested equally? What makes magical animals magical?
Our journey to answer these questions begins in relatively modern times in the year 1611, but our story originates in the ancient past beyond any historical counting or human remembrance. Although the discovery that starts our journey was uncovered over 400 years ago it was then resealed for another 430 years, sort of. But events rarely unfold on a timed schedule and sometimes knowledge has a mind of its own and seeks, even wills, to be discovered.
THE MAGIC WITHIN
His name was Revelantus. Although not a particularly powerful person of magical ability, he possessed one ability that was as rare as dragon oil, his ability to acutely sense the presence of magic. For instance if he came across a book, Revelantus could determine if the book had been amongst magic either from within a magical environment or even if the book had been touched by one of magical ability with an additional skill to seek out its owner. This heightened sense brought him fame and he was regularly hired to find lost objects belonging to magical folk. The local innkeeper (who was magical) once lost his grandmother’s heirloom ring that he had planned to pass onto his daughter. He placed the ring in his pocket and traveled to deliver it to his daughter when upon arriving found the ring to no longer be in his pocket. He searched the pathway to his daughter’s home to no avail. Aware of Revelantus’ ability the innkeeper sought him to help in the search for the treasured family item. Revelantus invited the innkeeper into his home and they sat in front of the large fireplace. This was Revelantus’ favorite place to relax and feel energized at the same time. It was said that the foundation of the fireplace dug down deep into the depths of the earth. Revelantus had no idea if this were true for that which he treasured was its open hearth and the peace and
