CONTENT WARNING
Friends That Break was originally titled How We Start. After rebranding the series, we decided to republish this novella in anticipation for Friends That Collide.
Friends That Break features a couple who have experienced multiple miscarriages, so if that is a trigger for any reader, it is not a required read for Friends That Collide but adds context to the estrangement between Friends That Still… and Friends That Collide!
Happy Reading!

The need for a better job wasn’t felt more at the sound of a morning alarm at 2:15. Whenever I worked, I considered ignoring it. If it were my day off, Asher—my boyfriend—would roll over, just to make sure it wasn’t his. Despite one mid/closing shift during the week, his mornings started early too. But never 2:15 in the morning early.
The rhythmic sounds of son cubano traveled throughout the room, leaving neither of us any more alert than five minutes ago. This early, no one was perceptive enough to realize it came from my phone.
Asher nudged up, but I tapped my palm across his chest to stop him from getting up. That’s me,
I mumbled through my pillow. He sat back down, and a barely intelligible okay
left his mouth. Relieved it wasn’t him, Asher stretched down against the mattress, reminding myself if I didn’t get up now, I’d probably be late for work.
Once I dragged myself out of bed, the last resort to wake me up was a cold shower. By now, I should have been used to them. I prayed the day wouldn’t come where freezing water lost its effectiveness, luckily for me that day wasn’t today.
My shift didn’t start until three in the morning, but I didn’t like feeling rushed. Getting up at this time was new for me, but only because my recent installation of braids gave me an extra ten minutes of napping time. Usually I had to detangle, separate and style my natural hair, but I can’t say that extra ten minutes wasn’t a gift. I’d tried to get enough sleep the night before, but I was too anxious yesterday to get the sleep I required to function normally.
Which reminds me...I studied the bottle of Lorazepam in my medicine cabinet. Most times I was a high-functioning person with hidden anxiety. It’d affected me since I was a teenager, and I did my best to
