    Chapter One

Tanisha Phelps stood, raised her champagne glass into the air, and tapped the edge with a spoon. The tinkling resounded through the room, stilling the myriad voices around the table.

She cleared her throat. I’d like to make a toast.

A murmur of approval went around the room and the guests lifted their glasses in preparation.

Tanisha turned to the head of the table where her mother, Yvetta, and Yvetta’s fiancé, Ray, sat.

They grinned at each other, and exchanged a tender kiss before lifting their own glasses and facing the younger woman.

It goes without saying that I didn’t always welcome Ray with open arms.

More like a frosty stare, Ray quipped.

A ripple of laughter greeted his remark, and Tanisha made a face.

    I admit, I didn’t approve of Mom’s relationship with this Romeo…

Ouch, that hurt, Ray said in mocking tones. Yvetta shushed him and giggled.

…but over time, I saw how happy Mom was, and how much Ray truly cared for her. She stopped to swallow the lump that had formed in her throat, and sniffed back threatening tears. They’re the real deal, and I hope one day that I’ll find such happiness too. She raised her glass. Here’s to Mom and Ray, best wishes with all our love, to you both.

Here, here, chimed the guests. To Yvetta and Ray.

Yvetta rose from her chair and went to her daughter, pulling her into a tight embrace. She whispered in her ear. Your time will come, sweetheart. I know it. She kissed her cheek and went back to her seat. Ray pulled the older woman close and captured her lips in a passionate kiss.

Get a room already, said Cherise, Yvetta’s best friend.

Now don’t be jealous, Cherise, said Ray with a grin.

Hardly, said Cherise. I’m just grateful you’re finally making an honest woman out of Yvetta.

On the contrary, piped in Ray, she’s making an honest man out of me.

Honest men? There is such a thing?

Ray feigned a stab to the heart. Ooo, that hurt. Nothing worse than the bite of a bitter woman.

You don’t do right by my girl there, said Cherise, and you’ll discover just how painful my bite is.

No worries there he said, pressing a kiss to his fiancé’s cheek. I want to spend the rest of my days making this woman as happy as she’s made me.

There was a round of oos and ahs around the room.

Oh brother! said Cherise, rolling her eyes.

    Everyone laughed.

Tanisha hit save on her keyboard and closed the file she’d been transcribing for her new boss, Andrew Fox. As his newly appointed PA, she was responsible for making sure all was in readiness for his first visit to the Ashworth Industries offices.

    And Tanisha was nervous.

When she’d been granted the promotion, and knew she would be working closely with the new COO of Ashworth, she did some research. The picture that developed was of a notorious playboy dubbed The Silver Fox in the tabloids, a reference to his prematurely gray hair. He was in his late thirties, born and raised in England, divorced since his late twenties from a wealthy American socialite, with whom, presumably, he still had a close friendship. Since the divorce, he had managed to steer clear of any long-term relationships, preferring to date a long string of socialites, supermodels, and actresses—all young, one more gorgeous than the next.

If even half could be believed, she already thought of him as a dick. She prepared herself to thoroughly dislike him, because he was a player and
