Special Thanks
First, I want to thank my home church, 3Circle Church of Fairhope, Alabama, for giving me and Sally the gift of two years of living on mission in Costa Rica. Without my church family, this book would not have been possible. I have had the honor of serving this local church for almost twenty-six years and it has been the most amazing ride of my life. They have taught me more about following Jesus than I have ever taught them.
I also want to thank our church family in Costa Rica, Iglesia Casa Vida. Thank you for trusting us and allowing us to do ministry with you. You guys are the real deal, Pura Vida!
I also want to thank our many supporters who have been standing shoulder to shoulder with us in your prayers and financial support during this time. Without you, we would not be where we are today. You have helped write this book.
I want to thank Chris Humphries for taking the time to correct my many mistakes.
Many thanks to Keith and Stephanie Glines for walking with me through the process of editing, formatting and publishing what you hold in your hands. They are an amazing team who love what they do.
Finally, I want to thank my family who has walked with us and supported us through this adventure of faith. Lauren and Daniel, Leah, Daniel and Victoria, along with the most amazing grandchildren a Papa
could have, you mean more to me than you know!
At the top of that list is my wife of 38 years, Sally, who sacrificed the most to follow this crazy idea to move to another country to do ministry. While most women her age are enjoying comfort and security, she was, well—not. None of our experiences and learning would have happened here without her faith and obedience to God’s call: For where you go, I will go; and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people and your God my God.
(Ruth 1:16) Thank you Sally for being my Ruth
in all of our adventures together. I love you!
Author’s Note
To my readers, I have to give you this initial disclaimer: I have never considered myself a writer and still don’t! I have always been content to be a pastor and now a missionary who has spent the last two years living and working in Central America. Writing has only been a small blip on the radar screen of my life and ministry, casually considered, then quickly dismissed. I’ve always had this notion that the world is so full of books that there is really no need for one more from me.
Then I turned sixty last year. Age has a way of first catching you and then changing you—in many ways! So now, after thirty-plus years of life and ministry in the local church, I have arrived in a place where I have something that not only can be said, but to me, is actually something that must be said. What you hold in your hands is something that I felt compelled—even pushed—to give you that I hope will challenge and inspire you to rethink what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Of course, if you are reading this book and you are not yet following Jesus, my hope is that by getting to know him and his ways you will end up following him right along with the other 2.5 billion people around the globe who call him their Lord and Savior. That many people cannot all be wrong! My hope for you would be that from reading what you hold in your hands, you would be awe-struck with Jesus and that you would be compelled to follow him and trust him. I have no idea if I will ever feel the need to write again. Only the Father knows if I will or if I should. So, for better or for worse, I am going to give you all that I have. I hope that by the end of our time together on this journey, at the last page, in the last paragraph, with the last period, I will be empty, but you will be full. My hope and prayer is that, together, we will be following Jesus and becoming more like Jesus each and every day!

Chapter One
The Way of Jesus
A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. (Luke 6:40)
Something has happened to the simple, yet radical and profound movement that was started 2,000 years ago by a Jewish carpenter from Nazareth. A movement that appeared to be dead on arrival with Jesus’ crucifixion, in only a matter of days became a movement that would change the entire Roman Empire in the span of just 300 years. Since then, few would argue the fact that this movement has had a profound influence on the world as we know it to be.
But it seems to me and to many others here in the Western world, this movement that started with a roar has become merely a whimper of what Jesus intended. Sunday after Sunday, people gather together in large expensive buildings, sing songs, listen to a teaching, drop something in the offering plate, and then head out the door and on with their lives—merely checking a religious box on their ever-growing to-do lists.
Surely this cannot be the movement for which Jesus gave his life? Is this the movement founded on the wonder of a resurrected Christ? The movement that, within a matter of days, transformed Jesus’ fearful disciples into fearless leaders who risked their lives to preach this message? The movement that swept across nations, that changed an empire, that shaped history, and for which countless faithful have given everything, even their own lives?
It cannot be. There has to be more.
A New Reformation
The book you hold in your hands is one feeble effort to help restart and reshape our thinking about what it truly means to be a Christian. I believe that what is needed and what is coming is a seismic shift in what it means to follow Jesus. You can think of it as a new reformation.
Just as Martin Luther poked his Ninety-five Theses into the eyes of a stale and corrupt Catholicism in 1517, there are more and more voices today who are calling for something just as radical. A reformation not of theology or knowledge or even of ecclesiology, but rather one of lifestyle, purpose, and mission.
This new reformation is calling us away from what some refer to as Churchianity,
with all of its shallowness and ineffectiveness, back to an ancient, authentic, revolutionary Christianity—a reformation that is once again rooted and grounded in the wildness and wonder of the person of Jesus.
Following Jesus
This new reformation is simply a response to an invitation from Jesus himself. Throughout the Gospels, the phrase Jesus most often used when he called out his disciples was follow me.
His encounter with Matthew was one of those times.
As Jesus passed on from there he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he rose and followed him.
(Matthew 9:9)
It didn’t matter that Matthew was a despised tax collector doing Rome’s dirty work, padding his pockets with a little extra for his time and trouble. It didn’t matter that he was considered one of those people
by society. Jesus called him, and he followed.
