CHAPTER ONE
ROLAND WALKED ALONG a sunny sandy beach on a warm summer’s day as his mother and father and his older brother Sean walked ahead. Their fluffy Golden Labrador dog, Kubar, followed the family, chasing crabs. Another boring day, Roland mused. Seagulls cartwheeled overhead in the summer sky. The squawking birds searched for fish and chips scattered amongst the stones. Roland lagged far behind, dragging his heels. Crafty crabs scuttled amongst the sand and salty rocks, on urgent crustacean business. Spotting one, Kubar barked and ran after it as it scuttled under a rock.
He wanted something that made people around him happy. It was the greatest feeling to make people smile. He knew a little warmth would make a big difference to the people he loved.
Then, he heard a voice.
Excuse me over here. Hey you up there, hello?
There was no one there. Well, it couldn’t be Kubar because dogs seldom spoke human-language.
Roland looked around with a puzzled expression.
No, down here on the sand. Oh why can’t he see me? Look the mighty powerful sea washed me here!
said a mysterious voice.
