You did it...
Chapter 1
Clodagh pulled out one of the wooden chairs from around the chunky kitchen table and flopped into it taking a bite of her apple as she did so. Ma was busy by the stove cooking yet more bacon and eggs for the B&B guests and Sam was sitting on the floor playing with Basil the chocolate lab, ragging a soft rope toy back and forth, Basil’s tail wagging frantically as he did so.
Where’s Dad?
she asked.
He’s already up at the manor, love. There’s three families coming today. Two in the big house and another in the barn. I think they’re bringing horses with them too, maybe you’ll have someone to hack with this weekend.
She smiled, glancing up from the stove. Sam love, can you run that plate of extra sausages into the dining room for me? They’re for those two business men staying. I have to say, I can’t remember the last time we were this busy. That film certainly has made the place popular.
Sam stood up ruffling Basil’s brown head and giving the tug toy they’d been playing with one final shake. Basil stared at him with a huge doggy grin that only grew wider when he saw Sam pick up the plate with the sausages on it. He made a little deep woof noise at him and Sam shook his head, his dark floppy hair shaking a little.
Sorry Bud,
Sam said. These are for the guests.
Basil followed him hopefully to the door before returning to sit on his beanbag by the stove with a little huffy woof. Clodagh giggled at him. She pulled the newspaper over towards her and started flicking through it as she ate the rest of her apple. Her eyes caught the word horse and suddenly she felt herself freeze. She clutched the paper tightly, crinkling the sides a little as she started reading the article she had stumbled on.
There in black and white was a whole page dedicated to a spate of horse thefts in the area. Several ponies and horses were missing as well as some tack and rugs. The police didn’t seem to have much to go on and were suggesting horse owners and yard managers increase their security and be vigilant. There was even a number to call if anyone had any information on the thefts or saw anything suspicious too. Clodagh stared at three pictures of missing horses printed in black and white, a pretty little grey pony, a coloured and a dark horse described as bay under the photo. Her heart began to pound as she imagined what their owners were going through. She kept thinking how she would feel if it was Ozzie that had gone missing.
What’s the matter, love?
Ma asked, a little worried. She put a bowl of porridge down and slid into a chair opposite Clodagh. Clodagh passed her mother the paper. Ma nodded. I see. Well at least we don’t need to worry about Ozzie, eh?
She smiled; Clodagh frowned. That pony won’t go on any transport for anyone but you. Good luck to anyone trying to get him to budge.
Clodagh almost sighed with relief; Ma was right. When Ozzie had first turned up in the paddock in front of the gatehouse they lived in, he had been a total surprise. There had been no truck pulling up to drop him off, no trailer pulled by a 4x4, nothing. She’d only discovered later this was because Ozzie didn’t box easily at all. His owner had taken him away to sell and it had not been easy, Ozzie had made so much noise he had woken her up. Still, even knowing that he didn’t load and that she could see his whole paddock from her window, she felt nervous.
She was still feeling anxious when she and Sam stepped out into the early morning sunshine to head out to school. As always, she headed over to the paddock to check Ozzie on the way. He looked up as she walked over to the gate, hitching her school bag further onto her shoulder. Shaking his grey mane, he wandered over to her, his neat little ears pricked hopefully. As soon as she was within reach, he nuzzled at her with his soft grey muzzle, hunting out the carrot he knew she would have with her. She handed it over and as he crunched away on the carrot happily as she stroked his soft neck, she couldn’t help but think back to the paper and the article. It was terrifying to think there was someone out there taking horses. Leaning in just a little she whispered into his ear.
Don’t go anywhere ok, there’s some bad people around taking horses, you only go places with me, ok?
He snorted at her and she took that as him saying ‘sure thing’ and smiled. Sam was standing nearby and shook his head with a slight smile.
You know he’s not going to talk back, right?
Clodagh patted Ozzie and then walked over to him nudging him in the arm as she did.
Beth talks to Maverick too,
she pointed out. Mentioning his girlfriend made Sam blush and Clodagh wasn’t sure, but she thought he looked around nervously too, just in case Ma was nearby. Clodagh laughed, he was going to have to tell her that he was seeing Beth at some point. Clodagh could only imagine how it would go, Ma would be super happy for him, but she could be a little over the top with her enthusiasm. The thought made her smile.
They headed towards school happily teasing each other. It really helped distract her from thinking about the thefts. Their route to school led down past some of the manor’s fields that Mrs. Fitz, who owned the manor, gatehouse and land, rented to the local riding school. As they reached the gates to Briary, Clodagh saw Sandra Bell who ran the school, standing on a small ladder fixing something to the wall. She waved and Sandra waved back with a smile. As they walked on, Clodagh glanced back wondering what she was doing.
Mike, Beth and Rachel were waiting for them at the school gate which surprised Clodagh, usually only Mike would be stood there. Beth smiled at Sam and hooked her arm in his as they walked up. Mike made a gagging noise causing both Clodagh and Rachel to laugh and Sam to playfully swat him on the head.
Hey, watch the hair!
Mike giggled, straightening his dark mop.
Did you hear?
Beth said, suddenly serious.
About the horse thefts,
Rachel added, twiddling her braid in her fingers.
They all went quiet as Clodagh nodded. Clearly the word was spreading around the area.
I know one of them,
Beth said. Everyone turned to look at her. The horses I mean. Raindrop Royale, Rain for short. She was in the paper, the white grey mountain pony.
Clodagh remembered the picture and felt her chest tighten. She was owned by one of the riding club members, Steph, you met her briefly, she was one of the riders who volunteered to be an extra on the film.
Clodagh tried to remember the girl but struggled, there had been so many people
