A Strategic Prayer Manual - Lisa R. Jett
Introduction
The servant of the man of God got up early and went out, and behold, there was an army with horses and chariots encircling the city. Elisha’s servant said to him, Oh no, my master! What are we to do?
Elisha answered, Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.
Then Elisha prayed and said, Lord, please, open his eyes that he may see.
And the Lord opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire surrounding Elisha.
2 Kings 6:15-17 (AMP)
The story of Elisha and his servant gives us a glimpse at how there is a spiritual realm active outside of the natural realm. The natural realm consists of anything that has a physical or real existence as contrasted with one that is spiritual. (Merriam-Webster¹). A friend described it as that which can be logically understood and seen, smelled, touched, or comprehended by human reasoning. The spirit realm* is that place where both angelic and demonic activity take place. Jesus speaks about the existence of the spirit realm in John 1:51 (TPT) when He says, I prophesy to you eternal truth: From now on, you all will see an open heaven and gaze upon the Son of Man like a stairway reaching into the sky with the messengers of God climbing up and down upon Him.
The Amplified Bible says the messengers are angels.
Another example is in Luke 10:17-19. After Jesus had sent out the seventy-two to preach the gospel, they returned with great joy, announcing that even the demons were subject to the name of Jesus. Jesus’ response was, I watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning. Behold, I have given you authority to walk on snakes and scorpions, and authority over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.
Jesus was not talking about the natural realm here but about what was actually happening in the spirit realm when the disciples invoked the name of Jesus. In the story of Elisha’s servant, this is also evident, as he saw both the natural and spirit realms. At first, all the servant saw were the armies of the enemy, but when the Lord opened his eyes to see in the spirit realm, he saw the Lord’s army ready to act on their behalf.
The call to intercede in a situation through prayer, which makes you an intercessor, is one that God marks you with as part of your destiny. You may have heard God call you in the past, or you may be hearing it for the first time. The call of an intercessor to pray over a city, territory, region, or nation is no small calling. You will be one who will stand in the gap, pray, and declare God’s heart over that place He has called you to. This calling will bring the need to understand that there is a spiritual realm around us. If we get stuck looking in the natural, we may become discouraged, overwhelmed, or without hope. However, be encouraged by the words in 2 Corinthians 10:4 (AMP). It says that "the weapons of our warfare are not physical (weapons of flesh and blood). Our weapons are divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses."
In my journey, and I believe for yours, the Lord will or already has begun to open your eyes to see in the spirit realm. It can be through our spiritual eyes, which I can only describe as having your eyes closed but seeing something in your mind’s eye. This would be similar to having a memory, but it would be something you never saw or experienced before. Some may experience visions with their natural eyes, which I believe is what happened with Elisha’s servant. There are also many stories of people who have seen angels with their natural eyes, but angels usually reside in the spirit realm. The Lord can give dreams that reveal what He is doing or what He wants to accomplish in the spirit realm. As we pray and seek the Lord for strategies to pray and act, we need that spirit realm vision to see what God sees. You may experience a vision of what the demonic are trying to accomplish in the spirit realm, but all for the purpose of knowing how to pray and make room for
