Chapter 1
It was a phrase that was shunned within her family.
Snake Oil.
And over the years much of the stigma had faded away. The company was legitimate now and well respected. It had been at the forefront of some life changing medical projects, so it was unsettling when some cocky or vindictive researcher or journalist dug up facts from the distant past… and revealed that Globochem was built on the proceeds of fraud.
It had been Amy’s great great grandfather who had founded the company. Of course back then it hadn’t been called Globochem, that name had come much later.
In the beginning it had been Cecil Smithwick and Son’s Miracle Cures,
and Cecil, along with the young boy who pretended to be the son he never had, had toured the towns and villages of the American Mid-West selling alleged cures for everything from bad breath through to brain tumours. All of the cures were fake of course, endorsements came from carefully groomed members of the crowd that used to form as father and pseudo son set up their stall. Of course those giving positive endorsements disappeared just as swiftly as Cecil, he always moved his act on long before the desperate and often terminally sick buyers realised that they had been duped.
Business had been good, very good, and fate had also been kind to Cecil. The authorities and furious customers had never caught up with him and made him pay for his dishonesty, and it was only a few years later that he set a fire to his stall and attempted to settle down. He married, and produced a daughter, a daughter who was determined to balance out her father’s bad karma. She worked hard within a fledgling pharmaceutical company and soon became recognised as a brilliant chemist.
Laura Smithwick had married a respected pharmacist and using her recently departed, and very wealthy, father’s money she had started her own company selling cures that she knew actually worked, and spent her free time developing remedies for other ailments.
Hers was the generation that left the family’s fraudulent past behind, and as time passed the company grew, it passed from mother to son, and then to his son until it reached Amy’s father.
And as an only child
