    1. The lost pet

Mexico was the second host country to have a World Cup mascot. This tradition began in England 1966 and continued during Mexico 1970. To bring this project to life, the famous designer Lance Wayman was chosen, who created the graphic identity of the Mexico 68 Olympic Games.

He designed Pico, an eagle that wore the uniform of the Mexican National Team and that came out of an egg in the shape of a soccer ball. His image was even part of the official stationery of Mexico 70', however, a Mexican advertising agency presented a counterproposal to the World Cup Organizing Committee: a little boy named Juanito who wore the National Team uniform and a straw hat.

Finally, the character was so nice that he was chosen over Pico, becoming the official mascot of those games.

    2. Mexico: the first contender

The Mexican National Team has the honor of having played what was the first match in the history of the World Cup. This happened during the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay, where the opening match was played between France and Mexico on July 13, a match that the Gauls won by a score of 4-1.

    3. The first relays

Since the first World Cup was inaugurated, until the 1966 World Cup in England, there were no player changes during a match. It was not until Mexico 1970 that the possibility of making substitutions was introduced and Juan Ignacio Basauuren became the first player to score a goal during the World Cups.

    4. CDMX: The city with the most World Cup matches

Mexico City has hosted a total of 23 World Cup matches between the 1970 and 1986 World Cups. 19 of them were played at the Azteca Stadium and four at the University Olympics in Ciudad Universitaria.

In addition, with 19, the Azteca Stadium is the venue that has hosted the most World Cup matches.

    5. One of the footballers with the most World Cups

The greatest soccer reference of a Mexican player in World Cups is Antonio Carbajal, who managed to attend five different editions.

Carbajal was part of the national team during the editions of 1950, 1954, 1958, 1962 and 1966, he was the only footballer who had achieved such a feat, until, in France 1998, the German Lothar Matthäus tied the Mexican record, followed by the goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

    6. Grandfather and grandson scorers

On June 17, 2010, in Polokwane, South Africa, Javier Hernández scored his first goal in a World Cup and thereby celebrated the 2,100th goal in World Cup history.

That annotation was very special, since it meant that 'El Chicharito' scored against France, an opponent that his grandfather, Tomás Balcázar, had also scored against during the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland.

    7. The first game that resembles association football in history is the Chinese game cuju. The history of the sport dates back to the Han dynasty (206 BC).

    8. The oldest professional football club in the world that is still in existence today is Sheffield FC. It was founded in 1857 and currently plays in the Northern Premier League, in the eighth English division.

    9. Greenland has never been able to have a FIFA-recognized team, because they can't grow grass to create pitches.

    10. Germany experienced a baby boom of around 30% about nine months after hosting the World Cup in 2006.

    11. The oldest player in the history of the World Cup is the Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary, who at 45 years old, was called up for the Egyptian National Team in the 2018 World Cup.

    12. 8 out of 10 soccer balls are made in Pakistan.

    13. The ball is not actually round, but somewhat oval.

    14. Oleg Salenko of Russia holds the record for the most goals scored in a single World Cup match. He was able to score 5 goals in Russia's victory over Cameroon.

    15. Ricardo Olivera from Uruguay, scored the fastest goal in football history. He was able to do it in just 2.8 seconds!

    16. The Indian team did not want to participate in the 1950 World Cup because the organization did not allow its players to play barefoot.

    17. Pelé is the only player to lift the World Cup trophy three times. He won the 1958, 1962 and 1970 titles with Brazil.

    18. The biggest recorded victory in football history was 149-0, where all goals were scored as own goals in protest.
