Maurice hated the tight feeling as he scrambled up the chimney. With the brush handle clamped beneath his armpit, he scrambled for a hold in the narrow chimney.
Fighting back the urge to cough, knowing that his employer would use any excuse to hold back payment, he swallowed down the black soot and found his next foothold.
The only light came from the chimneypot high above him. Through the round opening, all he could see were the heavy clouds that lumbered above the rooftops.
Scraping the brush head against the stained brick, Maurice set about cleaning what he could around him. Disturbing the dust, he felt the tickle at the back of his throat and could not hold back the sneeze.
Wedging himself between the narrow walls of the chimney, Maurice fought to suppress the sneeze to no avail. As the sneeze echoed down the chimney, the familiar voice of Mr Brian barked from the fireplace far below.
‘Maurice, that’ll cost you a penny.’ His gruff voice echoed up the chimney. ‘I’m not paying you to sit around up there. Now get a move on, we’ve got another four houses to do.’
Smearing the dirt on his face, Maurice muttered a silent curse at the haggard old man beneath him and set about scrubbing the chimney once again.
‘Hello!’
The sudden voice surprised Maurice, and to him it sounded like the voice had spoken to him from right behind his head. Despite being used to hearing voices through the walls, often hearing conversations other people thought were secret, this was different.
