Author

Jinx James

Crime fiction author Jinx James was born in the UK, and lives in Australia. He has worked in music, advertising, and TV comedy. He has always been fascinated by charisma, satire, and what makes people laugh. That’s his usual way of looking at the world, but he is also intrigued by how his characters react when confronted by a terrifying dilemma, or a moment of confrontation. As he always says, it’s the characters that write the stories. They insist that their voices are heard. Today Jinx lives in a wine-growing area in regional Australia with his wife and two dogs. As Kit James, he also writes a humorous dog book series, Mutt to Megastar, starring Elliott, a wisecracking dog.

    The Legend - Jinx James

    Chapter 1

He’s always liked the sound that the door of his Jaguar makes when he nudges it shut. It’s a rich, plush, clunking sound and it says to Keith everything he’s always wanted to say about himself.

He hits the button that locks the car, then turns, making his way up an elaborately landscaped winding pathway to the front door of the big house.

Keith is a large man in his middle fifties with short, thick salt and pepper hair. As usual, he’s immaculately dressed. Today it’s a grey suit, crisp white shirt, and a blue tie. Draped about his shoulders, despite the warm spring weather, is a lightweight grey overcoat with the empty arms swinging at his side as he walks. The whole ensemble is set off by a pair of black leather gloves, which he lightly tugs and tightens, flexing and wiggling his fingers.

Keith rings the doorbell and after a few seconds, a man in a tee shirt and shorts comes and opens the front door. He’s still rubbing his wet hair with a towel.

    ‘Yes,’ he says.

With his right hand, Keith pulls a small portable tape recorder from the pocket of his overcoat. With a flick of the wrist, he presses the red record button with his gloved thumb.

‘Er, Mr Kelly, is it?’ he enquires with a pleasant smile. Then, before the man can answer, he adds, ‘My name is Morrison, Keith Morrison.’

He waits for just a moment, then says, ‘I wonder if I might come inside and have a word with you... if it’s convenient, that is?’

This is the bit that Keith likes the best. Seeing the specific facial expressions
