“Bit of bad news, you chaps. No use beating about the bush, Jock’s gone.” “Gone?” echoed Simon. “Gone where?” For a moment Jim wondered exactly where, then put the unseemly speculation aside and said, “Sorry, Simon, but there it is. I mean — he’s dead.”
The chaps are farmer Simon Hawkins and his shepherd Albert Winter, viewed by the district as being obsessed with finding a cure for bloat, and shifty, respectively. The messenger is farmer Jim Middleton, “an honest trader”.
