    About the Author

    Luke and Snoops: Birthday Party

Luke and Snoops awaken to a stormy morning. But this is no ordinary morning; this is a very special morning for Luke and Snoops, it's their birthday. Luke sits up in bed and checks the clock on the nightstand. Luke cannot believe it is morning because it is so dark outside. Luke leans over the side of the bed and sees Snoops looking up at him. With a big smile on his face, Luke cheerfully says, Snoops, today is our birthday.

Luke slides off the side of the bed to the floor, and Snoops springs from his dog bed to meet Luke as his feet touch the floor. Luke bends over to scratch Snoops's head and asks, Good morning, Snoops, did you sleep well last night? Snoops replies with some barks. Then he says, Let's go eat breakfast and talk to Mom about the bad weather and our birthday party. Luke stands up and goes downstairs to the kitchen, and Snoops follows him.

As Luke and Snoops enter the kitchen, Luke's mother greets them, Good morning, Luke, good morning, Snoops.

Luke responds, Good morning, Mother, and Snoops barks.

Then she informs Luke, Luke, I have some good news and some bad news about the birthday party. What would you like first?

Luke is surprised to hear there is bad news, and he says, I guess the bad news first.

As she is getting Luke's cereal out of the cupboard, she explains to Luke and Snoops, We are not going to be able to have your birthday party outside because of the bad weather.

Luke is disappointed to hear that the party will not take place outside, but he understands, because of the bad weather.

She continues, And with the bad weather, I'm not sure your friends are going to want to come over.

Now Luke is very disappointed, and with a very sad express on his face, he gets Snoops's dog food and bowl out of the cabinet.

In a joyful voice, Luke's mother says, Well, the good news is that you and Snoops can still have your birthday party with me.

In a dissatisfying tone, Luke says, Yes, ma'am, but I sure would like to have my friends here also. Luke goes to put Snoops' bowl of dog food on the floor, and before the bowl touches the floor, Snoops is trying to get at the dog food. Luke sits down and eats his breakfast.

After finishing his breakfast, Luke picks up his bowl and puts it in the sink. Luke then walks over and picks up Snoops's bowl and puts it in the sink. Luke slowly walks out of the kitchen toward his room, and Snoops follows him upstairs. In his room, he takes his pajamas off and gets his clothes and his slingshot out of the closet. While Luke is putting his clothes on, Snoops grabs one of Luke's shoes and runs out of his room.

Luke yells out, Snoops, bring my shoe back to me. Luke runs after Snoops and his shoe.

In the living room, Snoops lies down under the coffee table on top of the shoe and starts chewing on Luke's shoe. As Luke enters the living room, he says in a strong voice, Snoops, I told you to bring my shoe back to me. Snoops lies under the coffee table growling and chewing on the shoe. As Luke moves closer to the coffee table, he repeats, Snoops, I told you to bring my shoe back to me.

But Snoops continues growling and chewing on Luke's shoe as he watches Luke approach. When Luke leans over to get his shoe back from Snoops, he finds Snoops carefully watching him and quietly growling. Luke stares at Snoops, and Snoops stares back at Luke. They remain motionless for several minutes when all of a sudden Luke yells Aaaah and then reaches for his shoe. Snoops starts barking. Luke grabs hold of the shoe and starts to pull the shoe out from under the coffee table. Snoops grabs hold of the shoe with his mouth, and a tug-of-war begins. They pull back and forth with the shoe until eventually Luke gets his shoe back.

As Luke sits down in the living room to put his shoe on, his mother walks into the living room and says, Luke, here's a couple of dollars, I need for you and Snoops to go to the grocery store and get some milk.

Luke responds, But, Mother, it's pouring down rain, and it's thundering outside.

She tells him, It looks as if it is starting to clear up, plus we cannot have cake and ice cream without milk.

Luke stands up and says, Yes, ma'am. Come on, Snoops, let's go get some milk.

Luke and Snoops go to the front door, and his mother reminds him, Make sure you get your raincoat out of the closet.

Luke stops at the closet near the front door, gets his jacket out, and puts it on before heading out the front door. Luke and Snoops are having a difficult time walking to the grocery store due to the strong wind that is blowing. In fact, the wind is blowing so strong they are walking down the sidewalk in an S-like pattern, similar to slithering snakes. While they are fighting through the strong winds, they are also being pelted by raindrops that feel like ice pellets being blasted out of a cannon. Luke decides they should seek shelter from the wind and rain for a little while to see if the weather will either lighten up or stop all together, so they can continue their trip to the grocery store.

Luke finds a big tree to seek shelter from the bad weather. As he sits down, Snoops climbs into Luke's lap, and Luke ask, Snoops, I do not understand why Mother sent us out into such bad weather for a gallon of milk. I do not need to have milk with my cake and ice cream. Snoops barks back.

While Snoops lies in Luke's lap, he begins to shake because he is soaking wet from the rain and the howling winds. Luke opens his raincoat and puts Snoops inside to help him get warm. As they wait for the bad weather to either pass or lighten, they both fall asleep.

A little while later, Luke is awakened by Snoops as he springs from Luke's lap and starts barking. Luke looks around and sees Snoops barking at three mean-looking dogs. These dogs belong to the Alley Kids. Luke jumps to his feet, pulls his slingshot out of his pocket. Then he reaches down to grab a few rocks to fire at the dogs. Luke fires the first rock straight at one of the dog's head; when the rock hits the dog's head, it bounces off the dog's head with no effect. Luke does not understand why it did not affect the dog or scare them; in fact, it only made the dogs madder.

As the dogs begin moving toward Snoops, he turns and runs toward Luke. When he reaches Luke, Luke reaches down and picks him up. Luke puts his slingshot in his pocket and turns around and runs away from the angry dogs. The faster Luke runs, the faster the three angry dogs run. Luke tries his hardest to run faster and faster, but it doesn't seem to do any good. Snoop peers over Luke's shoulder and watches the angry dogs as they are gaining ground on them. Then Luke peers over his shoulder to see how close the angry dogs are. Just then, the three angry dogs leap for them. Luke stops very quickly, leans over, and the three angry dogs fly past them. When the three angry dogs hit the ground, they roll to a stop. The three angry dogs spring to their paws and start running after Luke and Snoops again.

Once again, Luke runs as fast as he can, and the three angry dogs close in on them again. Luke tries his hardest to run faster and faster, but it doesn't seem to be doing any good. Snoops continues watching the angry dogs over Luke's shoulder, and he can see they are gaining ground once again. Then Luke peers over his shoulder to see how close the angry dogs are to them. This time, the three angry dogs are right on Luke's heels, and it looks as if they are not going to get away this time. Just as the three angry dogs leap for them, Luke can see the three angry dogs' sharp teeth sparkle as they are heading right for both of them. With their mouths wide open and their sharp teeth about to snap closed on Luke and Snoops, Luke wakes up screaming, which wakes Snoops up, and he starts barking. Luke was only having a dream. Awake, Luke looks around and notices the bad weather has passed. Then he looks down at Snoops and says, Let's go to the grocery store and get the milk, so we can get back and celebrate our birthday.

As they arrive at the grocery store, Luke tells Snoops, You have to wait outside while I go in and get the milk. I will be back in just a minute or two. Snoops barks back in response.

Luke goes inside and gets the milk and goes to the checkout stand. He puts the milk on the counter, and the cashier rings the milk up and tells Luke, That will be 75 cents, please. Luke pulls his money out and pays the cashier. Luke gets the milk and his change from the cashier and goes outside. When Luke exits the grocery store, Snoops starts barking and runs over to meet Luke. Luke reaches down and pets Snoops' head, then they start walking home.

While they are walking home, they notice there is some sunlight shining through the clouds, and Luke says to Snoops, Snoops, maybe our friends can come over after all, and maybe, we can have the birthday party outside. Let's asks Mom when we get home.

A few minutes later, they hear a voice from behind them say, Well, well, well. Look who we have here.

Luke and Snoops stop walking and turn around to see who it is. Luke is thinking to himself as he is turning, I really do not want to do this because I already know who it is. Just as Luke has expected, it is the Alley Kids and their
