Enneagram Patterns & Poetics - Elan BenAmi
Provenance
There you are
all the eras and epochs
expansions of light and darkness
of form and the surrounding context.
Everything, everywhere
and nowhere at all,
-unfolding all together-
be still a moment
and know thyself.

Energy
Life begins with a surge of energy,
-of what it means to come into being-
to grow means to participate in the flow of energy,
and so to exist is to contain energetic capacities—
those within, and those all around.
We are always encountering, relating
and being renewed again.

Instincts
Our instincts signify the way we
as human beings
apply energy towards
the most fundamental of imperatives: survive.
The first line of code paves way to the others:
movement, growth, change, connection. Everything.
To survive is to begin to thrive.
And so our instincts are always
on that razor’s edge
where we experience
the immediacy of our aliveness.

For human beings, surviving & thriving involves three main instincts. These instincts represent exchanges of energy that occur between:
Self & Form - First and foremost, the corporeal aspects of the self must be protected and nourished. We all need food, water, shelter, sleep, etc. We all must seek and manage resources that contribute to our personal homeostasis. The aim of this energy is preservation. Down to the level of our cells, we are programmed to work on the repair and maintenance of our inner systems so as to be able to move, grow and adapt as need be.

Self & Other - The deepest and strongest bonds we make are in one-to-one relationships. The aim of this energy is generation. We grow from pairs—even our genes and our chromosomes come in pairs. In the same way that a straight line is the shortest distance between two points, this energy represents a focused form of energy. Note—this instinct points not at the self or other, but rather at that which is created between
