    CHAPTER 1

    BLAZE

    He had like a soft white lightning bolt, round at the edges, on his forehead. And the biggest brown eyes. Not a Black Beauty—but a Brown Beauty. Maybe that sounded more like a mare. He wasn’t. He was all stallion. That white mark was how he got to be called Blaze. Officially he was Silver Blazes Boylan by Joycean out of Mollygirl. Horse people talk that way. Our town, Whispering Ridge, was zoned for horses, so everyone who lived here was a horse person.

    Right now Blaze lived in Meri’s parents’ barn. Meri was my BFF along with Rollo. Meri’s father was a veterinarian—a special kind. He worked with traumatized horses, usually Thoroughbred racehorses like Blaze. That meant something bad had happened to them and they were hurt inside their heads. Something had happened to Blaze and Meri’s father was trying to fix whatever was wrong.

    Blaze was a Thoroughbred racehorse. His whole lineage could be traced to one of three stallions England imported in the 1600s—the Byerly Turk, the Darley Arabian and the Godolphin Arabian. They were all bred for speed.

    He was the most valuable horse in Meri’s parents’ barn, probably in the whole town—and it was full of valuable horses. Besides Daisy, his other BFF was Beth. She owned him—at least on paper. Her father paid for everything since she just graduated from high school. The mixed-up state Blaze was in, she was the only person who could ride him.

    I always fed Blaze a carrot, standing outside. He’d put his head through the top half of his stall that opened onto the walkway behind Meri’s house. He’d make a noise after he finished the carrot. Thank you, or That was good, or Got another? I settled on thank
