Broken Hearted II - Gwendolyn Jones-Campbell

    Chapter 1

    Pulse

One, two, three, breathe, god dammit! Come on, Shantel, hold on, baby! the office cried.

Shantel started coughing. But as she bleed out of her neck from Me-Me slicing her throat, Shantel’s mouth began to run blood down her chin like a clown face with makeup on a Halloween night.

We got a pulse! one of the ladies from health care screamed. Tameka and Yolanda were standing out on base, watching with their eyes bucked and hands covering their mouth.

As health care lifted Shantel’s bloody body and laid it carefully on the stretcher, she began to go into shock. Her body was shaking out of control. Then all at once, the shaking ceased, the noise became silent, the blood continued to run, and poor Shantel’s face was finally covered with a white sheet.

Hello? Diamond answered the phone, shocked and confused to see the caller ID display State Prison.

Yes, ma’am, may I speak with Mrs. Diamond, please, the sister of Ms. Shantel McDaniels? he continued. This is Warden Steven.

Yes, this is Diamond, may I help you?

Oh yes, ma’am, I, I was calling…, the warden paused, swallowed, and said. Ma’am was calling to inform you of a tragedy that has taken place here at the facilities, he continued. I’m sorry to break the bad news of your sister, Mrs. Shantel McDaniels, was killed today after she returned from her visit.

The phone hit the floor before warden could finish.

Ma’am? Ma’am? Hello, Mrs. Diamond, are you there? All he could here was loud screams from Diamond’s broken heart of losing her sister to the life of a prison fight.

That following week, Shantel’s body was sent to the funeral home, for which was a funeral of many family and friends whom had mad love for Shantel. She was laid to rest in a silk black, red-and-green dress by Gucci, and her hair and makeup was on point. Shantel looked as if she was only sleeping. Her casket was chrome and trimmed in gold, and the gold words written inside SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE.

For two weeks, Tameka and Yolonda were held in the hole. Food was slide threw a hole in the door, with only a mat on the floor, a cold steel toilet with a sink attached, and a tin cup for water when thirsty.

Wendy was moved to unit 15 to continue her recovery from a busted head and split asshole. After many hearts were crushed from the death of Sharon and the one everyone’s admired, Shantel, things began to grow cold and quiet at the prison. All units on grounds was on lockdown for thirty days. No recreation time, no phone calls, no commissary order, and no visitations. Even chowtime was brought in the units by officers whom passed cold bagged lunches to inmates.

Shantel’s death took a toll not only on most of the other inmates but the officers and other workers as well. Following the next day, extra guards were put in units and all around the grounds.

    Chapter 2

    Happy Birthday

    Happy birthday to you!

    Happy birthday, Lil D!

    Happy birthday to you!

Voices yelled out while Diamond and Rodney stood on each side of Lil D as he blew out his candles for his third birthday.

It had only been eight months since Shantel’s death.

Diamond and Rodney had taken full custody of Lil D and was doing whatever by all means necessary to give him a happy home. Lil D would sometimes ask for Shantel, but all Diamond or Rodney could say was, Mom had to leave us, as they gave hugs, kisses, and any gift imaginable to comfort Lil D from missing his mom, Shantel.

That night, Diamond laid Lil D down after his bath from a full day of excitement from his birthday party. She and Rodney showered and laid down. They didn’t talk much, just held each other as they drifted off to sleep.

Good morning, sweetheart, Rodney said as he awakened to Diamond, who was already awake laying on her back, just staring at the ceiling.

Good morning, bae, Diamond said in a sort of whisper as she kissed him on the forehead.

    You okay? he asked.

Yes, I’m fine. She gave a half smile. Rodney knew that Diamond wasn’t fine; she missed Shantel, and that was really taking a toll on her.

As weeks went by, Rodney decided to call up K-Smooth, Red Boy and Lil Mo. It was time to set up shop and get back on the grind. Although Devonte and Shantel both were dead, there was money that still had to be made and plenty of product to move.

We gotta get off this syrup, Rodney said. Devonte already hooked us up on the info, let’s make it do what it do.

K-Smooth licked his lips and nodded. Aight, tomorrow we relocate the shop from the warehouse.

And set up where? Lil Mo asked, looking puzzled.

Give me ’til tonight, K-Smooth said. There’s this apartment complex located on Dort Highway and Fenton Road—I see it’s up for sale. He paused. Shid, Devonte was already talkin’ about renting them motherfuckers out, and you know the rest.

    Rodney laughed.

That’s what’s up, Red Boy said. Tenants can come straight to the office, pay they damn rent, and get they weed and syrup.

K-Smooth laughed, then took over the conversation. When a muthafucka get off this shit, it’s strictly ’bout that bud. That sticky, that loud. You heard me?

I feel you, Rodney said. Scratching the top of his head. I’ma hit that number up on that sign and see if can we get that shit for the low-low.

All that night, Rodney, K-Smooth, Red Boy, and Lil Mo moved products from the warehouse across town to the new location, which was about to become Northside Square Apartments. K-Smooth had called the realtor and met up with Mrs. Bonitos, and with a little paperwork and one hundred eighty thousand dollars, it was sold and now in the
