About this ebook

The first four parts are introductions to each character, and from there, we move into the story.

- Rivalry

- Mafia family dysfunction

- Division

- Coming together

Oscar Al-Ghul has always found Lee Yen-Soo a threat to his Mafia world, as well as his reputation. The people give Yen-Soo the attention Oscar wanted. The attention he craved for is never given. After hearing the birth of his newly conceived son, his anger and resentment increase. The birth of an Alpha is unexpected.

Awhile back, Alpha and their packs have overtaken the entire Mafia World. They are seen as strong, fearless, and dominating. The feeling of insecurity falls on the Mafias who are humans, wondering what makes them so special. Jealousy grows, and with that comes rivalry, and with rivalry comes the division.

Sophia Al-Ghul, Oscar’s wife, bore him children, and Oscar comes up with an idea to help his kids remain in an environment where they don’t have to feel inferior.

He invests in building a school with a few of his other friends that has the same views as he does. This school would only authorize kids with human genetics and no trace of any kind of wolf blood.

Growing up, Oscar has taught his kids that werewolves wanted to dominate wherever they step foot and look down on people they overpowered. He has taught them to stay away and to never to be seen with any.

Lee discovers what Al-Ghul had been plotting, and word spreads quicker than light. Furious at the allegations put against people of his kind, he decides to fire back to keep the humans away from werewolves. No trace of humans should be near their territories in neither day nor night. Since then, gaps has grown between friends and communities.

    Chapter 1: Conflict

    Game Night

    Narrator’s POV

    Home, MainLand

Reporter Jerry exclaims, Wow! And another field goal was made by MainLand in the last quarter. Currently, the scoreboard is 19−25.

Reporter Falon says, Jerry, for Heights to qualify for a higher league out of state, they’re going to have to overrun MainLand or at least make a tie.

    *****

Coach Collons signals a time-out to the ref.

Feeling frustrated, he loosens his tie and grinds on his gum. The team huddles out of formation and off the field to their coach. Coach Boone claps for his team, shouting across the field, Great job! Keep goin’!

Coach Collons: Look I don’t wanna sound bitter, but I don’t want to lose my job and you don’t want to lose any opportunities, right?

    Right! the team shouts back.

Coach Collons continues to repeat himself and they shout even louder.

Coach Collons: All right then! We need a different game plan, but with only four minutes left on the clock, we need to cut it short.

We have to make one more touchdown to match the twenty-five points.

Trey: So then who’s gonna run the play?

Collons scans his team with his eyes, concluding a hard decision, and lets out a hindering sigh.

Coach Collons: Tyson, I want you to have the ball in your hands at the centerline.

—Ben and CJ (positions: left tackle right tackle)

Once Tyson makes the first call, switch places with Zane and Logan to catch your opponents off guard.

    —Trey

Tyson, once you break out of line, swiftly hand the ball to Trey and make a break for it to the other side.

    —Kevin

Trey, while you handle the ball, meet Kevin down the left side of the field near the line to the offense side.

    —Ben and CJ

Trey, once you have a clear view of Kevin, shoot the ball to him. Ben and CJ, block your guards on each side to protect Kevin.

    —Tyson

Kevin, you’ll have to meet Tyson halfway through the offense side and pass the ball to him so that he can score a touchdown.

Hey, Burt! the referee hollers. Time’s almost up! Let’s get this thing goin’.

    They gather together.

Coach Collons says, All right, Tyson, call it on break!

Tyson shouts, "SET HUT, 1-2, ready!

    Teammates yells, Break.

    *****

The boys run out to the field with the crowd cheering them on.

    Whoo! Let’s go, guys!

Tyson’s baby sister, Kimberly, waves her poms in the air, cheering on for her brother and his team.

They set ready for their plan and lower their positions.

    Clear set! Ready! Tyson shouted.

WILD 80! the other team yelled.

The crowd silence, hearing their chant.

    *****

    Hut-hut!

    Minutes later

It is remarkable! Their plan is a success and the crowd is ecstatic.

Reporter Falon says, What do I always say, Jerry? Heights always deliver! Another win for—

Reporter Jerry comments, "Now hold on. They didn’t win. They only made in a tie with their opponents.

The crowds are cheering for their teams, and cannons are shot across the bleachers.

Players from both teams go to congratulate one another for respect and sportsmanship, but Tyson doesn’t feel the need to do so. He goes up to them, but without any good intentions.

As they’re greeting their opponents, Jackson already feels one of their opponents’ demeanor. He scans all of them and slightly nods his head when they compliment him. He ignores his senses and goes to greet their coach until he heard these words: Just remember this is our territory. Why don’t you get back over there to your little border on the other side of the city and sleep in them little cages? Tyson says behind one player’s ear from MainLand, shaking his hand.

Jackson doesn’t need to look behind to hear whose words that came from before securing a hostile punch on the side of his jaw. Tyson’s back harshly impacts to the ground, and it isn’t seconds before people started to circle and get between the two.

Dad! Tyson! Kimberly alerts her father who is standing from the bleachers.

Oscar rushes down the bleachers, running toward the field where the commotion is taking place. Tyson proceeds to rise from the ground to confront Jackson, but he is so winded that he falls back again.

Hey! Oscar yells, turning the ref around, shouting a few profane words. That boy touched my son! Get those animals out of here!

Coach Boone hears the slurs Oscar and his son keep making. Hey, you watch your mouth about my kids. You call them that one more time and you’ll get more than a punch.

Do you recognize who you’re talking to?

Coach Boone says, I don’t care for whoever you are. You’re no less than a bum selling crack on the streets. If I hear you talk to my players like that again, you’ll be dealing with me.

Kimberly rushes over to Tyson to see if he’s okay, but before she could reach him, she spots Jackson’s eyes fixed on her, stopping midway in her tracks, feeling hesitant to come closer. Coach Boone pulls him over and sends him to the locker room. She kneels and calls Becca over.

Rebecca says, I don’t understand why they haven’t sent help yet. Becca pulls her hair behind her ears. It’s okay, Rebecca comforts Tyson as he grunts in pain.

Ordering Kimberly to go alert the paramedics, she does what she’s told and calls them over. Later, the paramedics inform them that he only has a minor blow from the attack and some bruises encircling the right side of his jaw.

To sit out a couple of practices and take some antibiotics would be best for him right now.

Paramedics brings Tyson back to the locker room.

    *****

    Locker room

    The team sees Tyson enter.

Trey says, Hey, Ty, you good?

Tyson replies, Does it look like I’m fine? He limps to his locker. They told my dad I had to sit out a few days and take these stupid medications.

Trey laughs at Tyson’s remarks. Maybe you got what you deserved.

    What?

I’m just saying what you said did not need to be said.

Tyson says, You on their side or something? I’m already pissed enough, so why you tryna’ start something?

The room grows tense hearing the conversation in silence.

Shut up! Ain’t nobody ask for your input!

He sure as well shut you up, Trey utters beneath his breath.

Tyson slams his locker, facing Trey, and Trey does the same, looking him dead in his eyes.

Background check: Tyson and Trey never really have their choice of being friends. Their mothers know each other and it is picked up from there. They don’t like each other as much growing up either. Arguments over arguments in addition to the brother-like behavior.

    *****

Kevin says, Guys, let’s just ch—

Coach Collons walks in and interrupts the scene.

Say what’s going on here? Did I miss something?

No, Coach. The team settles back to their own business.

Thought so. Okay, you guys let’s wrap it up. Enjoy the rest of your nights, and hopefully, we have a better season this year.

He makes his exit outside their locker room. The team grabs their things and heads home for the evening.

Chapter 1, Part 2: The Collision

Next day at school, 8:02 AM

The loudspeaker announces, "Attention! Attention all students. Stand and rise to say the Pledge of Allegiance. After we are finished, please report to the gymnasium, for there is an immediate assembly to be held this morning.

    The Pledge:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of

    United States of America

and to the republic for which it stands

One Nation under God indivisible with

    Liberty and Justice for all.

    Please report to the gymnasium.

The students report to the gym as board members wait patiently once students are seated.

Dean Faculty says, Good morning, Spring Heights students. This morning, Principal Carter would like to discuss an important matter covering the school. He hands Principal Carter the microphone.

Principal Carter says, Yes, thank you. Good morning, students. I need to address something with you all about the altercation I had witnessed last night on my phone and finding out this happened on our school grounds. If any of you were not here the previous night, we had a football game taken place. A brawl emerged between two players over something that was said. One of the players who participated in this situation was one of our students. Many spectators in the audience took videos and pictures which winded up on numerous social media platforms. What happened that night is not what we tolerate here in this school. What was said was uncalled for and disrespectful. In Spring Heights Academy, we do not want our students to be shined in that kind of light, so today, we’ll be taking a different turn of events. I’ve spoken with the principal from our opponent’s school, and it appears we have both agreed on something. Today, we will be taking a trip upward east to the MainLand Prep Academy School. We have permission from the borderline associates to cross over.

Now you can bring your phones but— the students already begin hollering.

Excuse me? He raises his voice toward the microphone and grabs their attention again.

Principal Carter continues, Now you can bring your cell phones, but once we enter their school building, they need to be shut off. Do I make myself clear?

Yes, Principal Carter! the students exclaim.

Principal Carter says, Good. You can exit the gym once we call your bleach number. Get all the belongings you need from your lockers and get them quick. The busses are waiting outside and teachers are sure to escort your classes.

    *****

    Forty minutes passed

They all gather in their busses and head off. Kimberly, Brantley, Thalia, and Odalie ride in the same bus, but Tyson and his friends, along with Becca, are riding on bus 3.

There’s a lot of kids in the vehicle, and it is pretty loud in the back, so they decide to move to the front. Thalia and Kimberly sit on the two-seater while Odalie is by herself on the other side, and Brantley hovers over two of her sisters behind their seats.

Thalia says, How do you guys think it’s gonna go?

I’m excited, Kimberly says, turning around.

Odalie asks, You’re excited to get ripped apart?

Thalia rolls her eyes. She’s just joking don’t believe her.

Odalie says, I don’t know if you realize, but we’re crossing to an enemy lane. This isn’t day care.

Brantley adds, You know I heard the one Tyson got in a fight with was the Alph—

Ms. Al-Ghul, please put your seat belt on and stop leaning over other seats! a teacher yells from the back.

It is on! Brantley shouts back.

Brantley, I’m not blind. Buckle your seat belt before I ask the driver to pull over.

Fine, Brantley whispers under her breath. She buckles her seat belt but enough to not restrain her from seeing her sisters.

As I was saying, she quickly says, I think that guy, Jackson, was the player who hit Tyson.

Kimberly says, It was literal madness what happened out there. You guys should’ve seen. It was even overwhelming for Becca and me to witness.

That’s why I learn to stay distant. If any of you get them pissed, they’ll claw your eyes out. Odalie catches the expression on Kimberly’s face transition to worry. She laughs hysterically, mocking her worried posture.

I’m only kidding calm down, Odalie says, continuing to settle in her headphones. They’ll only scratch out one eye.

Oh stop it, Thalia says, hitting her sister.

    What? Odalie chuckles.

The girls joke the rest of the ride before they enter the borderline.

    *****

The bus ride ends, stopping at the distinguished school parking near their sidewalk. Kimberly looks at her window, analyzing the view.

Kimberly says, I thought this place was going to be more depressing and lonely. This seems so…sophisticated.

Heights teacher replies, All right, open the doors and watch your steps.

The kids get off the bus, gathering with the rest from the ten remaining buses.

Principal Carter shouts, Okay! I want everyone to walk in a single file line. Once we enter, be on your best behavior and no talking until you are allowed to, all right?

Walking to the academy, they examine the large structure of the building. Reaching the front entrance, they are told to proceed to their gymnasium and are accompanied by security guards.

    *****

    Principal Song ParkYoung POV

When I’m giving my lecture, I look to the audience to see their attention is directed somewhere else. Looking to my side, I see the kids of Spring Heights have finally come.

Principal Carter says, Hello, thank you for having us here, he smiled genuinely.

No problem. We are happy that all of you decided to join us, I say. And I see your students are still at the door. They may come inside, but they don’t have to sit. We’ll be performing an exercise that requires standing.

Principal Carter says, All right! Guys, get over there with the other students. You don’t have to sit down if you prefer to stand instead. The kids feel reluctant to go up, but Mr. Carter pressures them to do so anyway.

Hey, young man take your hat off when you’re inside, he says to Logan.

Feel free to get relaxed and comfortable. The important reason for coming here is the goal of getting to know one another and speaking on your experiences. As you can see, there is a pink tape line dividing half the court. I want for half of you to stand on one side and the other half to stand on the other. Do not get too close to the tape yet. Stay a few feet away from it, Principal ParkYoung says.

The students approach the line and face one another on opposite sides. I can see they were crossing their arms over waists, looking down, and playing with their nails. They didn’t look comfortable yet, but I was determined for our plan to work.

I found this game in a movie, a very influential movie. It almost relates to you all right now. I know you guys are still a bit uncomfortable, but I promise you to have nothing to worry about.

They all follow my instructions except this one student whom I am able to catch is the person from the incident. He goes on his phone, not laying a simple glimpse at any of the people beside him or the students from the other side. So I signal Principal Carter.

Tyson, Principal Carter says, approaching him. Tyson, I told you no phones once we enter the building. If you don’t put it down now and follow her instructions, you’re out.

Like I wanna be here, he says, still with no acknowledgment to anyone.

Okay you’re done. He pulls him from the line and escorts him out of the room.

    *****

    Short Narrator’s POV

Mr. Carter says, Listen here, son. You are going to stand outside this hallway, and when you’re ready to come back inside, you need to owe their principal and the students an apology.

    Tyson stays quiet.

Learn to be respectful. Nobody’s putting up with your mess today, he states, going back inside.

    *****

    Back to Principal ParkYoung’s POV

Principal Carter says, I apologize for the inconvenience, Ms. ParkYoung.

It’s fine. Let’s start the game, I reassure. If what is asked applies to you, step on the line.

My first question is, who has ever embarrassed themselves so bad that till this day that memory still sticks with them?

Smiles glisten on the student’s faces. They all step in line.

Okay, now get back in your places. The next question is, who in this room ever flunked a test, quiz, or assessment that you had to repeatedly lie to your parents for the longest time until they quit asking?

Slightly fewer kids step on the line. However, the questions are helpful enough to get everyone less tense.

Well, here’s a serious question. Who here has ever been picked on because of the way they look or act?

Again, all the students step on the line. Quite a few start to fold their arms on their waists, but I remind them that this is a comfortable and safe space.

Don’t move if this applies to you as well. Who here has ever felt the need to change themselves because you felt less than the people you were surrounded with?

Some kids move back, but what caught my eyes is seeing two of the Al-Ghul daughters, Kimberly and Brantley, haven’t moved from the line.

Come to the line if you were underestimated by people no matter how much you’ve proved them to be incorrect.

Most of the students move away, including Brantley, but Ms. Kimberly still stands there.

    *****

    Narrator’s POV

Kimberly’s chin is lowered the entire time, not wanting to look up. She grows anxious, waiting desperately for Ms. ParkYoung to ask another question.

Kimberly, Thalia whispers. Breathe, it’s okay, she mouths. Kimberly nods and turns forward again.

Getting tired of waiting, Kimberly lifts her chin to be confronted by many eyes, but instead of being confronted by a million faces, only one catches her attention. She is confronted by something else. It is a broad chest that matches her height. Looking farther up right in front of her stands the Alpha. He stands above her and they make eye contact with each other.

Kimberly feels the atmosphere change and her tension arouse. Right in front of her stands Jackson. The first time a wolf and a human had even been this close. His aura is pretty intimidating.

Don’t worry, I’m not gonna touch you or hurt you. There’s too many people here anyways, Jackson utters enough to not let anyone else hear, well, at least those who are human.

She feels a bit stunned by his statement, but Jackson feels her body relax and looks away from her.

Ms. ParkYoung says, Okay, students. This is the last one and it is not a question, but if you could at least bring joy to one person in this world, either wolf or human, please step in line.

Nobody makes the first move, but each person from both sides does look one another in the eyes and that is more than enough for a direct yes or no.

I guess we all have something to share in common don’t we? Ms. ParkYoung says, smiling.

Everyone, please follow me to the cafeteria, for we have something else prepared for you all.

    Chapter 1, Part 3: Confrontation

    Narrator’s POV

Principal Carter and Ms. ParkYoung walk out of the gym to get Tyson. He still doesn’t want to take part in the lessons being taught, but Ms. ParkYoung is prepared for students that aren’t going to budge in at first.

The students are guided to the canteen, and every door is open. They enter the cafeteria, seeing the lunch tables spread apart. Ms. ParkYoung enters the cafeteria, standing with the other advisors in front of the students.

Ms. ParkYoung says, At these tables sit six different colored stickers on every bench. Each sticker has your name displayed on it.

She pulls out a pile of paper and hands it to the professors.

Ms. ParkYoung adds, Advisors, on these forms are listed the kids’ names and their color. Students, once an advisor calls your name, raise your hand to hear which tables you will be assigned to.

Wait, so we’re being separated? Brantley looks at her sisters.

Kimberly says, Mr. Carter never mentioned anything about getting split up.

    They begin calling students.

Rebecca, Bailey! a teacher yells. Rebecca raises her hand. Please report to table A5, she says, showing her lunch table.

Brantley says, Wait I don’t want to be by myself—

    Brantley Al-Ghul! a teacher shouts.

Here! she yells back and walks toward the advisor.

You are at table D3. She points. Brantley amusingly shows a frown to her sisters behind her and waves goodbye.

From there, more students are getting called and all of Al-Ghul’s kids leave, except Kimberly.

    Kimberly Al-Ghul, an advisor hollers.

    I’m over here, Kimberly says.

Oh, you can just raise your hand, sweetie, she laughs. Your table is 6A.

Kimberly says, Okay, thank you. She nods and smiles.

Kimberly makes her way to her table and sees not many people there but recognizes one of the boys she’s seen from school. Her sticker is plastered. They say hello and talks for a while and then comes another Spring Heights student joins them.

The three Heights students remain talking until the wolves show up; they suddenly go silent. To a shock, it is the Alpha, his Beta, and the Delta.

Jackson, Renesme, and Hunter walk all together.

Oh gosh, we’re in for a surprise, aren’t we? one of them mouths.

    *****

I’m not sitting here, Renesme argues, turning around to the guys and crosses her arms.

I have no problem sitting with…them, but not with an Al-Ghul.

Sit down, Jackson says firmly, continuing to make his way to their table.

Nobody speaks, and awkward tension fills the air, looking down at their laps and trying to focus on something else. Kimberly tends to get impatient when she’s put in awkward situations, so she makes the first move.

Hi, I’m Kimberly. Nice to meet you.

They glare at her, but nothing is said. The tension gets more awkward.

Kimberly says, I like your cafeteria. It’s really big, except I got lost in this huge cafeteria when I was little. It was really nerve-racking. I turned out fine though.

Oh my gosh! Renesme puts her hands over her forehead.

    Hunter smiles.

Mr. Carter makes his way to table 6A.

Mr. Carter says, So I see it’s still quiet over here. Why is that?

I don’t know, one of them says.

Mr. Carter says, Well, let me ask you guys this question. How do you guys think the dynamic of this city can improve being the future generation?

Hunter replies, I don’t think it can change if people from the other side can’t change their preferences or opinions about us.

Mr. Carter clears his throat. And what do you guys think about that? he asks, turning to the Heights kids.

One of the kids at the table speaks their input.

Same goes for them. How can we trust a species that we have no information on apart from the long history of dangers of Alphas and being involved with Mafia business, and I know there are Mafias on our side as well, but you guys tried stealing that from us, our reputation.

Renesme says, We never stole anything. Your father was scared of Alphas taking only his reputation, not anyone else’s but himself, and that made him separate the both of us. She comes at Kimberly.

The only thing the other side cares for is money and fame, and the moment it starts to slip from your hands is when you quiver.

People in this world see the leaderships we bring to the table, she adds.

A leadership that looks down on humans? another Heights kid adds.

We don’t look down on humans. We look down on the other side, Hunter objects.

The conversation emerges into an argument. The four students are left going back and forth. It isn’t getting anywhere.

The only ones who doesn’t intervene are Kimberly and Jackson.

Okay, hold on, Mr. Carter interrupts.

Since this hadn’t come to what I hoped it would, Jackson?

    Jackson looks at Principal Carter.

Mr. Carter says, We haven’t heard a word from you, but if I may ask, as an Alpha and as a leader for your people, what do you think about our side?

Jackson slightly shakes his head. There’s nothing to think about. If there’s no trust, then there’s no trust. I’m a vicious kind, and I don’t want to be a leader to people who are afraid of me.

Kimberly’s eyes show compassion. The feeling of guilt wraps her body.

Principal Carter says, And, Kimberly, do you have anything to say?

    No, Kimberly says quietly.

Principal Carter says, All right then. You guys can leave this table. I wouldn’t stand the tension either. He leaves.

So they all leave with nothing else to say to one another.

The rest of the trip, they are educated on famous impacts from werewolves that came before them, the bloodline of Alphas in different parts of the world and the archive of being in the pack, and the different majors in the academy along with the social statuses.

Only a few students change their perspectives, and for others, it still remains the same.

    Chapter 2: Guilt

    Narrator’s POV

    Evening, home

Kimberly! Mom said dinner in ten minutes, Thalia announces, passing her door.

Okay! her sister replies, finishing her
